Some states might but not mine. I lock most of mine up but the ones I have for home defense and concealed carry stay out.

In the US there are approximately 100 homicides related to home invasion annually. That's it. In the entire population.

In that same year there's are also 21000 suicides by firearm. There are 459 accidental deaths by firearm injury for children 0 - 14. Guns are more fatally dangerous to children in homes than burglars are to homeowners.

A gun in your house makes you more likely to die by your own hand, or by the hand of someone else with that gun. Or for those living in your home to die. That's why you keep that shit locked up if you have it.

Burglars do their best to break in when people aren't home. Gun won't help you then.

How likely are you to kill someone in you're house (while being justified in doing so)

Very likely, in the case of a home invasion given the Castle Doctrine.

c'mon mate a gun won't solve the problem

Sounds like it solves it pretty well.

CyborgSage00x0 posted...

I'm sure there is pure break-in statistics somewhere (and likely by state/city), but I recall seeing a study this year that says your chance of being attacked during a home invasion is literally almost 0%. So, while you may technically have a right to shoot someone invading your house, if you're keeping a gun for self defense, instead of home defense, you're wasting your time, money, and statistically, putting yourself and others in greater harm over something that might be as likely as getting struck by lightning, depending on where you live.

If there was such a survey, it'd be complete bullshit given how many home invasions turn into rape, a physical attack, etc. And even if the odds were actually low, do you want to be that .01% whose wife and daughters are raped and murdered while you're left for dead? Because that literally happened in my state not that long ago.

an ar-15 style gun is not for home defense

that's either a shotgun, or a handgun

It clearly is. A handgun is less for home defense than a ar-15. A handgun's primary appeal is the fact you can conceal it, which makes it better for personal defense or murder.

lol, just lol. Offhand, I can't even think of a state that requires it. Even the liberal states just try to encourage their use by not taxing for them.

I see everyone is spouting this BS again. Believe it or not, the caliber that AR's shoot (5.56 or .223) are actually far superior for home defense than any shotgun or handgun round because they don't penetrate walls as badly. Mind you, they can still go through like 3 or 4, but it's not as bad as buckshot or 9mm that can go through 5 or 6 walls. Plus, you have 30 rounds (depending on your state) which is far superior to any handgun or shotgun and it has significantly less recoil than 12 gauge. The only downside to AR's for home defense is they are extremely loud, especially indoors. So are handguns and shotguns, but they aren't quite so bad.

It's a semi-automatic man. It may be a little overkill. Semi-automatics are war machines.

It's not at all. It has been studied. Areas with higher rates of gun ownership also have higher suicide rates. Having a readily available method to kill yourself with no opportunity for outside intervention (like with overdose) means more suicide. Access to a gun greatly increases the chance a person may commit suicide.

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/magazine/magazine_article/guns-suicide/

A 2008 study by Miller and David Hemenway, HICRC director and author of the book Private Guns, Public Health, found that rates of firearm suicides in states with the highest rates of gun ownership are 3.7 times higher for men and 7.9 times higher for women, compared with states with the lowest gun ownership, though the rates of non-firearm suicides are about the same. A gun in the home raises the suicide risk for everyone: gun owner, spouse and children alike.

Semi automatics have been around for over 100 years, they're not overkill, just the best tool for the job

Actually, full-auto are war machines. Semi is a broad-range weapon which excels in most regards, even hunting. And keep in mind that handguns are also used in warfare.

That's a correlation not a causation argument, and it's clearly being used for propaganda. More importantly, that argument is doubly fallacious considering that it doesn't seem to examine whether they already owned the gun or decided to go out and buy a gun to kill themselves. That's not even touching on the fact that gun ownership is generally highly concentrated so the total ownership for the state isn't a meaningful statistic.

The idea that the authors are purporting -- that somebody sees a gun and thinks, "Oh, gee, that's a nice gun, I'm going to blow my brains out!" -- is completely wrong.

Plus he's wrongly assuming that it's just burglars -- guys after material goods -- doing the home invading. Sometimes it's psychos.
