booby traps are illegal in most (maybe all) states. how does knowing how to fight protect you from someone with a gun? they won't always be right in front of you.

even if someone has a knife you risk death or injury by trying to fight them as opposed to having a gun.

yet you think knowing how to fight will solve the problem :(

How likely are you to consider using the gun for other means

100% likely if someone breaks into my house. Once you cross the threshold you are target practice.

No, no this

No shit if somebody came into your house randomly are you allowed to shoot them. My question was how likely is it some random dangerous stranger comes into your house vs how likely you are to use the gun for other things

See this is the problem with the gun culture in America. You don't need a fucking M4 for home defense. A handgun or rifle will do fine. Not to mention they are much easier to control. Or you can do as Joe Biden suggested:

Get a shotgun.

I'm sure there is pure break-in statistics somewhere (and likely by state/city), but I recall seeing a study this year that says your chance of being attacked during a home invasion is literally almost 0%. So, while you may technically have a right to shoot someone invading your house, if you're keeping a gun for self defense, instead of home defense, you're wasting your time, money, and statistically, putting yourself and others in greater harm over something that might be as likely as getting struck by lightning, depending on where you live.

tl:dr: Home and self defense has, and always will be, a poor ass excuse for gun ownership, which is why most other countries don't allow this justification.

An M4 is a rifle

Depending on the caliber, rifles are much easier to control than handguns.

The M4/AR-15 isn't a large rifle at all. They're small as hell, which is why the U.S. military switched to them.

Nah

I would use a .45 for home defense

Them bitches ain't easy to control or navigate

On the other hand, a .357 rifle is simply better in both categories

How can you think the others are okay but not an M4? It's just another gun. The better your gun, the better your chances of successfully defending your home. Especially since you're likely to be outnumbered.

So? The M4 is the choice gun for the military because it's accurate at both short and long range, good indoors because of its size, and you can use it as a melee weapon easily without changing your grip on it. There's literally no other gun I'd rather have in any scenario other than a sniping match or having to mow down tons of people

I see everyone is spouting this BS again. Believe it or not, the caliber that AR's shoot (5.56 or .223) are actually far superior for home defense than any shotgun or handgun round because they don't penetrate walls as badly. Mind you, they can still go through like 3 or 4, but it's not as bad as buckshot or 9mm that can go through 5 or 6 walls. Plus, you have 30 rounds (depending on your state) which is far superior to any handgun or shotgun and it has significantly less recoil than 12 gauge. The only downside to AR's for home defense is they are extremely loud, especially indoors. So are handguns and shotguns, but they aren't quite so bad.

Take her to the shooting range and let her fire off a clip or two. 9 times out of 10, that will convert most people who are against guns.

If you are putting a gun in the house, make sure you get a good safe though, even most pro-gun people don't want guns sitting out in the open or in a dresser drawer.
