lol, for real though, you gotta give Jitsu wa Watashi wa a chance.

It's literally one of the funniest manga I've ever read, and it's also one of the most believable and likable romance mangas I've read too. It's just a VERY VERY good manga.

The series is coming to an end though so I think the author just wanted to make sure the final arc had a lot of impact and give proper closure to all the characters.

Like I said, Jitsu wa Watashi Wa is one of them.

Grand Blue is another REALLY REALLY funny manga. Made by the same guy who wrote Baka and Test. It's interesting because it focuses on college people and their shenanigans rather than your usual high school trope-y manga.

I couldn't name an absolute favorite comedy. Off the top of my head there's School Rumble, Genshiken, Tonari no Seki-kun, anything by Hattori Mitsuru because he's got a bizarre sense of humor (I wasn't really crazy about Sankarea though).

One of my definite favorites is Otaku no Musume-san. I remember a few people here read it, but I wanna recommend it again. A comedy/slice of life/drama about a 30 year old otaku who finds out he has a daughter, who promptly moves in with him in an apartment building filled with weirdos. Hilarity, shame (fueled by hentai/eroge and a lolicon neighbor), growth and drama ensue.

It's damn good, but be prepared for occasional mood whiplash; it can switch from gut busting comedy to a punch in the feels at the drop of a hat, sometimes in the same chapter.

Ooh I remember reading that a quite a while ago.

I remember feeling satisfied at the end, but feeling like the characters could have had some more time to grow.

Maybe I should reread it again.

And if you really like mood whiplash read Jitsu Wa!

I Googled Grand Blue & it sounds great! I think I am definitely gonna read this one. It has 36 issues right? That's a great size for a manga, not to small, not to big, I can easily get it & read the whole thing, as opposed to some manga that have over 500 issues & take months. (Not that I don't like big or Mangas though!)

It's 37 now, and it's still ongoing.

Also, it's a monthly manga so chapters are 2-3 times as long as weeklies. Sometimes going up to 60 pages per chapter. So 37 monthly chapters would be akin to around 90+ weekly chapters (if the average for weekly chaps were 12-14 pages)

Man I wish didn't detest reading so much and could actually enjoy manga, or light novels or visual novels. I'm bored outta my mind right now. It seems the spring season of anime turned out largely underwhelming compared to my high hopes for it. Of course 2 of the shows I was hyped about haven't finished and they seem to be doing great so perhaps I'm not being fair. Even looking at the MAL ratings though theres only a handful of shows before you hit low 7s and some of the ones higher than that are regarded as still disappointing like S2 of boring girlfriend.

Guess I could occupy some time with looking up peoples feelings on the summer season. I haven't even really looked at the line up yet. I know some of the people here watch stuff as it airs. Whats the general feelings on the start of the summer season?

I just finished watching Euphonium S2. spoilers inbound

the plot was so fucked up from the second season. they spent SO LONG building Reina and Kumiko's relationship and leave Reina in the dust at the end. And she ends up "with" Asuka instead? I mean, I like Asuka too and I admit the confession scene was great but I remember when Kumiko x Reina was the fucking ship of the year. And they buried Reina so hard in S2 it is so unbelievable

Anyway, tl;dr non spoiler version is this anime had top tier moment-to-moment character interaction and cinematography but I just wish it tied together these elements more cohesively in the end. also the (dare I say forced) melodrama in a couple episodes was wack, no surprise from kyoani. I'll give it a strong 7/10

Ok, I think its time MAL just added Isekai to the genre tags. Two anime this season have it right in the name and at least one more (knight's and magic which is ironically about mecha) is also isekai. I'm pretty happy with the boom but it'd be nice to see just on the tags that a show is isekai.

Hilariously the highest rated show of the summer is not actually even airing until next year (violet evergarden, which aired episode 1 at an event). A few of the shows look interesting and I'd love to know how other people feel about them.

Mahoutsukai no Yome - It's hard to really understand what this show is actually like. Is it a slow slice of life or a despair psychological show or a shonen action series with magic? Description unclear.... Well then. Turns out this (the second highest rated show of the summer) is ALSO not actually airing and is slated to be aired in october with 3 episodes premiering in theaters for no reason one night only near the end of july. Suddenly this season is seeming worrisome.

Made in Abyss - Just taking a quick look at episode one reception it seems to be very hype. Apparently its animation is amazing and breathtaking whilst having an amazing OST and apparently the source material is supposed to be great as well. Lots of people seem to be very excited to see it continue and the plot sounds plenty interesting to me. I always want more adventure/exploration shows so I'm pretty excited.

Fate Apocrypha - I already know what it is, just kinda wanna know if its being done well.

Kakegurui - I think you guys were talking about this manga a while back and it looks really interesting. Psychological "game" anime are some of my favorite

Princess Principle - fictional 19th century london with magic and cute girl spies and jazz music. Huh. Anime original as well. Kinda feel like it will probably end up being garbage but I'm hoping its not. Also hoping for glorious yuri.

Knight's and Magic - looks kinda interesting. Isekai about loser dude that likes mecha. Gets reincarnated into magical world with giant magical mecha. Isekai is fun. Isekai light novel with a name thats only 3 words. Mind blown.

Isekai wa Smartphone - Dude goes to a fantasy world with a smartphone he can casually call god on. Reception seems to be negative. Said to be blandly written, gary stu main, forgettable OST, poor visuals, generic, rushed. O well, the concept seemed kinda funny.

Going to these conventions often teaches me something that I seem to forget - that I do have some friends and people who are happy to see me. Every year I see a handful of people from an old anime club I was in about ten years ago. It's always good to see them, but at some point I figured it would be better to put all that in the past and try to move forward as far as making friends and such.

But maybe that's not the case. As I said, I do like seeing them. And besides that, several of them are pretty involved in con events and such, which I've been looking to break into. It could be that reconnecting with them could be the best thing for me.

Has anyone read Uzumaki? Its a really good horror manga about a town that's... haunted, you could say, by spirals. Its a really unique idea & after just reading the first 2 or 3 issues I just had to see how it ended. It was a very creative manga, most other horror manga, movies, games & what not, are so predictable or uninspired, Its usually either zombies, psychos or ghosts, never actual spirals. I never really knew what to expect with a plot as unique as Uzumaki's though.

Do you know of any other mangas like that?

You've basically read one of the best of the best in terms of horror mangas.

Junji Ito is widely regarded, both in japan and overseas, as a master horror storyteller.

Really, if you liked one of his works, you'll likely like them all.

@T0ffee I don't usually watch or read Horror themed things, I usually go for Action, Comedy & adventure type things. Not that I scare easily, its just, I find horror things usually are uninteresting or just kind of unoriginal. They have the potential to be amazing though, like Uzumaki.

I find that horror in manga form instead of movie form tends to be more sophisticated, because they can't just realie on jump scares or spooky music, they have to actually be good & find other, more original ways, to build suspense & such.

But I really enjoyed Uzumaki, what other Jungi Ito manga (Or just horror manga in general) do you like?

Yup. 100% agree with you in terms of horror in manga. It's also why SO MANY mangakas JUST CAN'T GET IT RIGHT. They either rely on pointless action sequences, too much ecchi, or just plain inept at writing a good atmosphere.

Basically, All of Junji Ito's works (except of course his joke series "Junji Ito's Dog/Cat Diary") are worth a read if you're into GOOD horror.

Other than him, I really don't read horror mangas all that much though. I guess you can say I've been spoiled by him. Whenever a "horror" manga gets dumb, or too actiony, I lose interest.

The only ones I've read through were Homonculus by Yamamoto Hideo (which is more psychological mindfuck than horror), and Monster by Urusawa Naoki (which is more mystery thriller).

I read some of Junji Ito's works a while back, of course the Enigma of Amigara Fault like most people.
But I only read a bit of Uzumaki before calling it quits, it freaked me out too much.
But I read all of Gyo out of morbid curiosity and wished I didn't. It was really disturbing to me and stills messes with my mind to this day. I'm not a fan of horror in any genre so it was a bad idea for me from the get go.

Out of the blue, it looks like Silver Spoon manga has left hiatus and there's 2 new chapters out. Pray it doesn't go back to hiatus before concluding.

That's day two of the con over. And it makes two days I wore my cosplay, and not one person knew who it was.

Well, at least no one is coming up saying its bad cosplay so theres that.

In terms of horror I definitely feel like anime doesn't really have many or any good offerings. A lot of the things that are horror and good aren't actually scary like higurashi and ghost hound. I think part of it might be due to associating that medium with fantastical things as standard. Like oh no, theres some crazy monster, just like every anime except normally its idiot highschoolers killing it in some stupid way, and now I'm supposed to be scared of it.

Still, I feel like ghost hound in particular created an atmosphere that really was conducive to horror, they just went in a different direction. Sorta. Maybe I should rewatch ghost hound. Wish there were more things like it.

Had a good day off. Used it to get a proper start on the anime season. Have not made it to all of the shows I intend to watch (i.e. Season 2 of New Game!, plus Irresponsible Galaxy Tylor, the sequel I never saw coming), but this is progress.

AHO-GIRL. I like to refer to this as "If the Average American Teenage Girl Lived in Japan". Unkind, perhaps, but it feels apt. ... In any case, Yoshiko is a dumbass, but that's in the title of the show.

Netsuzou Trap. Don't know how I feel about this one. A fan of the manga told me that the anime skips a lot of the internal monologues that add weight to what's going on, but, as it is, it feels a fair bit like a short-form Scum's Wish, only not as pretty. I think I like my yuri more like Sakura Trick (i.e. sweet and consensual), but I'll keep watching.

In Another World With My Smartphone. God's a bro, apparently. Pretty mild, as isekai shows go. Not expecting a lot here. Just more cute girls in fantasy land.

My First Girlfriend Is A Gal. This one just makes me miss Galko-chan. It's fairly heavily censored, anyway, and the main character's a knob (with friends who openly admit to being lolicon).

GAMERS! Well, I'm a gamer myself, so this one's probably a given, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by how funny it was (especially the snide subtitling), and by how much attention it paid to little details of the life. Probably my favorite of what I've watched so far.

Also playing Zodiac Age, and there's a lot about FFXII I apparently don't remember (e.g. if it looks like a T-Rex, it can probably one-shot you at the start of the game, so don't tease it). And yeah, the battle system's still annoying, but the Job System-y new License Board is a really nice change.
