It was praised for being smart and genre-savvy because it was tongue-in-cheek, but most slashers are very tongue-in-cheek albeit a bit more subtle. Other than discussing the tropes, it did things commonly found in other slashers. Then again, it's not that I dislike Scream or its sequels, I just find them absurdly overrated.
