We've been missing this thread for a while, so I thought I'd bring it back. Kicking off the discussion with the top 5 of the year so far:

1. Beauty and the Beast - $504 million
2. Wonder Woman - $390 million
3. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - $387 million
4. Spider-Man: Homecoming - $259 million
5. Logan - $226 million

Dunkirk is positioned currently to make about $180 million if it holds in line with other war-related films like Pearl Harbor.

What are you planning to see in the next few weeks/months?

Might see War of the Planet of the Apes this weekend

What I really want to watch is Valerian though

I think it's pretty tough for it to hit 400 at this point. It barely passed Guardians this weekend. Well over a month into its run? I would be surprised.

I am surprised that GotG outdid Spidey

Or is it still too early in Homecoming's run and it's on pace to pass them?

Homecoming is not on pace to pass it at this point.

19 days in to Homecoming for 259. 19 days in to GotG2 for 308.

I generally go off of domestic numbers, but worldwide numbers are interesting too.

Also, it's crazy how badly the last Transformers movie did. Like these movies killed overseas, the last two doing $770 million and $858 million.

This one's only at $423 million.

I wonder what happened.

My prediction is that it's going to Batman Begins, perform slightly below expectations, accrue a bigger following in the post-theater market, and help secure a more substantial box office on the sequel.

Begins had an uphill battle in the same way Homecoming did - a previous installation in the franchise that soured the public featuring an actor to which fans were lukewarm. Begins' word of mouth was strong, but it didn't release at the top of the summer and therefore fans were less likely to schlep to a theater to see it. May is the big money month for these releases; past that, risk-taking tends to diminish as people are on vacations and using disposable income on that.

Begins did extremely well in DVD sales, however. Homecoming will likely do very well on Netflix and that will ramp up the tickets on this one.

I think a key difference between Begins and Homecoming is the difference between their brands coming in

Nobody HATED any of the Spider-Man movies, they were just fatigued by 6 of them in 15 years, plus he was in Civil War.

Batman & Robin was a laughingstock that killed the franchise, but it had been 7 years and people were cautious but hungry.

Wonder Woman doesn't really qualify as proving that wrong. In the current climate, it's essentially genre busting. It SHOULDN'T be, but here we are.

People saying that Spidey is underperforming because there are too many superhero movies while currently the #4 film of the year (behind 2 other superhero films) really need to re-examine what they're saying.

This weekend sees the release of The Emoji Movie and Atomic Blonde, neither of which I expect to make huge splashes. At best, low 20 mil for both.

Meanwhile, Dunkirk is heading into the weekend with a first week take of 75 million, aiming for the first repeat #1 on a weekend since Wonder Woman. Homecoming is sitting at #91 all-time with a shot at reaching as high as #86 when the weekend is through.
