I have seen Nut Job 1 on account of babysitting a niece and nephew by using Netflix

It's not THE WORST kids movie but it's pretty dumb

I liked Dunkirk. Not my favorite Nolan movie, but I love how the film was setup with minimal info on the players, that constant wristwatch in the background, and how the stories connect. Also, the pilot was the ****ing boss

The Emoji Movie was a boring Wreck-It Ralph knock off. It's not the worst movie ever, and I got a few laughs especially from Poop (While in a crisis situation Poop can be seen repeatedly punching a fan and in another one he acts like Captain Picard), but it failed to keep me entertained for most of it.

The Nut Job was very boring too, and I'm surprised they're making a sequel to it.

So I know I'm way late to this about the Dark Tower and its budget...

The Dark Tower is an eight novel fantasy epic. It is not at all like anything else King has written. If anything of his should have got a big budget, it's this.

Considering its performance, no. No it shouldn't have.

Except that Dark Tower's performance was reflective of it's shitty budget. It's shat on because it's super compressed, which would be fixed by an actual budget.

Annabelle 2 pulled in 35 million on the weekend. Solid number.

But let's talk about the big news of the weekend - Nut Job 2. A 4000 theater opening. A pretty big commercial campaign. This movie actually exceeded my expectations of 9 million dollars. It tallied UNDER 9 million. That's the worst opening in the history of a massively wide release. Ever.

Ever.

Also, Wonder Woman is now the 25th highest-grossing film of all time, passing Frozen and Transformers 2; Spider-Man has climbed to #63 all-time, sitting behind Return of the Jedi.

Minor bit of news as Dunkirk has crossed the 150 million dollar mark. Which sadly isn't as impressive as it used to be. Still, it's got a slight chance of hitting 200!

Might be more interesting to compare it to something in the MCU for ticket sales. I feel like it's beaten the majority of films from there, obviously excluding The Avengers.

Here's a list of what topped it in ticket sales from the MCU:

The Avengers
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Captain America: Civil War

I don't foresee it passing any of them, although it's coming pretty damn close to Civil War.

This weekend sees the releases of The Hitman's Bodyguard and Soderbergh's latest outing, Logan Lucky.

I predict that we'll see yet another weekend of decline at the box office - which makes this nonstop decline since the release of Homecoming.

Anyone planning on seeing anything over the next couple days?

This weekend is pretty much set in stone as the worst box office weekend of the year so far.

The Hitman's Bodyguard barely scraped up 8 million dollars on its opening day to take #1 for Friday. This weekend might not even crack 80 million bucks.

That's... pretty bad. The last time the box office didn't crack 80 million was last year during the second week Boo! A Madea Halloween took first place at the box office.

The only real news right now of note is that Homecoming has moved to the spot right behind Iron Man 2 and will soon surpass it to be the 59th highest grossing film of all time.

Budget is 29 million, so it should recoup 2/3rds of the production budget this weekend.

Advertising is, I'm guessing, enough to put it at 60 million. I think the US gross will likely make it a complete wash.

Wonder Woman passed Spider-Man this weekend to take the #23 spot. Spider-Man: Homecoming moved past Iron Man 2 and is now gunning for The Fellowship of the Ring.

And other than that, this was a pretty terrible box office weekend. Hitman's Bodyguard made 21.5 million which is a little better than I thought it would do, but ultimately it's going to top out at 60 million probably.

Why is this weekend a perfect storm?

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4318&p=.htm

Essentially it boils down to this: no new wide releases this weekend. A weak holdover from last weekend (already well-documented as a bad box office weekend). And a major sporting event that is unique enough to pull disposable income.

Prepare your butts!

So this isn't really box office discussion, but movie is included in the title, so I'd like to mention I finally got to sit down and watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Kinda indifferent towards it, it felt like a movie where nothing happened for a lot of it. Drax felt more like a Flanderization of his GotG1 character and Starlord didn't do squat for 90% of the movie.

Although it's use of "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac towards the end was amazing.

One thing that threw me off A LOT was the timestamp at the beginning. Why was I being told that this movie took place two years ago? It had to have a significance, right?

And it never did. I figured there would be a ticking clock on them, a reason why the Guardians' story in the past was so significant. Maybe they would learn that Thanos was coming to Earth and it would take two years to get there, and we would end on this note of immediacy. But, it was just... there. And, honestly, a little superfluous thing like that can and has made movies less of themselves.
