It's a tortoise. I doubt he really saw all that much. It's not like he witnessed the signing of the Declaration and the creation of Mount Rushmore. You've already seen more than that tortoise ever did.

Some people think it is because they have a slower metabolism, and when the body is a metabolizing that is when signs of aging can show. Since they do it so slowly they can live longer.

I watched a video not long ago that talked about it. They claimed that once they hit sexual maturity they stop aging. If they lived in a bubble where it wasn't exposed to disease, predators, etc they claimed that they could effectively live forever.
