https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/08/disney-will-pull-its-movies-from-netflix-and-start-its-own-streaming-services.html

Disney wants to own a bigger piece of the streaming pie.

The company announced during its latest earnings report on Tuesday it intends to remove its movies from Netflix.

Instead, Disney plans to launch a branded direct-to-consumer streaming service in 2019 starting in the U.S. and expanding globally.

CEO Bob Iger told CNBC's Julia Boorstin Disney had a "good relationship" with Netflix, but decided to exercise an option to move its content off the platform. Movies to be removed include Disney as well as Pixar's titles, according to Iger. Netflix said Disney movies will be available through the end of 2018 on its platform. Marvel TV shows will remain.

The new platform will be the home for all Disney movies going forward, starting with the 2019 theatrical slate which includes "Toy Story 4," "Frozen 2," and the upcoming live-action "The Lion King." It will also be making a "significant investment" in exclusive movies and television series for the new platform.

The company will also launch its own ESPN video streaming service in early 2018. The platform, which will feature about 10,000 sporting events each year, will have content from the MLB, NHL, MLS, collegiate sports and tennis' Grand Slam events.

To power the services, Disney is buying a majority ownership of BAM Tech for $1.58 billion. Disney bought a 33 percent stake in the company, which was spun off from digital media company MLB Advanced Media, in August 2016.

"This represents a big strategic shift for the company," Iger said to CNBC. "We felt that having control of a platform we've been very impressed with after buying 33 percent of it a year ago would give us control of our destiny."

Netflix stock dropped more than 5 percent upon announcement of the news.

one thing i'm not looking forward to is when every single fucking company wants their own premium streaming service and you're gonna have to pay like $8 a month a piece for all these services.

eventually it's not going to be cost effective to cut cable anymore

i'm only going to either pay for an aggregate streaming service or use repositories on kodi to view what i want to watch if i'm being quite frank.

Sure, but at the same time, they're going to get a bucket of money for this. A smaller bucket than possible sure, but probably more than what they're piecemealing out to Netflix I'm sure.

Currently, I have Netflix, Hulu (in Fall and Spring because I can't keep up with tv), Playstation Vue*, and technically Amazon Prime Video. Yeah, at some point expenses pile up.

*offtopic, but fancy that, Sony essentially said its providing quality content by getting rid of Comedy Central. I mean I didn't really watch that channel, but if I were the rep who stated that, I would not be able to keep a straight face. Given my family's setup right now, its currently the best option for us. Kind of miss that one throw back nick channel.

It's an extremely stupid move, tbh. It's also a heads-up to watch as much stuff as I can. The most interesting thing this will affect is the MCU, which sucks since NFI was usually how I got around to seeing most of the films.

I can't see all of them charging $8/month, though. Plus the model is going to collapse (or become bundled somehow) because it's not viable for that many services to offer paid streaming.

I'm also wondering how this might affect their licensing of NFI Marvel shows since they're almost certainly going to moving the MCU films and it seems natural for them to do original content.

Netflix, Hulu, Funimation, Crunchyroll, HBO Now, Amazon Prime Video..
I guess the competition among them is nice. It drives them to make the best exclusive shows. I personally favor Netflix and Funimation. I like the exclusives on Netflix and Funimation produces some quality dubs and quickly too. Disney can branch off for all I care. It just means less stuff to skip over on Netflix. I very rarely watch movies anyway. If I do I usually just go to the theaters for that.

My wife and I have no cable or satellite at our house because it's too expensive. We have Netflix to watch some stuff and we have Amazon Prime only because as a student I get that half price. Cable is dying because it's too expensive. Segregating streaming services will cause that same problem again there.

That's kind of different though. Sony doesn't want people using Microsoft's services. Understandable since they are a direct competitor.
Or is there some sort of competition between Viacom and Sony?

...Didn't Netflix and Disney have an exclusive licensing deal until 2024 or something like that? It hasn't even been 4 years. LOL.

Like someone else said, these cable channels are gonna find out fast folks are far from willing to pay a monthly subscription to stream 5 to 10 channels. That and you can already stream channels if you have Xfinity/Comcast, DirecTV or Dish Network. So, yeah. Disney's wasting money with this move. LOL.

Now, if some of these channels banded together and collectively provided a streaming service that would be a different story. Something like...Netflix and Hulu!

...Oh wait. LOL.

NightMareBunny posted...

I have Crunchyroll--just renewed for 12 months the other day in fact--as well as WWE Network. I usually have Netflix from November to January for the Holidays.

I will ALWAYS pick streaming over Cable/Satellite--which some in the business call "Free TV" even though it costs money (LOL!)--because I don't have to see ads. At all. Being able to watch what I went WHEN I want is great, too.

I figure it'll go in a cycle. Large successful streaming services --> individual companies splinter off and see some success --> market gets flooded with small-scale services --> people stop paying for them --> companies start consolidating into bundles again.
