half and half

just avoid or ignore the horrible people and be friendly with the non-horrible people, few of them as there may be

if that's not possible, and/or if the horrible people includes those above you, look for another job fast.

same as anything, really. if it's bad enough, leave. if it's bearable, then bear it.

If you can't hack it, look for another job. It's easier than trying to find ways to cope with a situation you can't tolerate.

Otherwise it might just be a countdown until you snap:

And, if you do snap, you might wind up wanting to go to some strange town you keep seeing while riding the train every day where it looks like summer despite being winter.

I've worked in homes and taken care of residents that have Tuberculosis.
That counts as a toxic environment right?
I just wear PPE to handle it (Mask, gloves, gown).

There's a shitton of drama going on at my work place rn that's really affected the staffing to the point where we've been severely short staffed on several occasions, including on a big sale day. It fucking sucks and even though I'm not directly involved or picking sides it still makes me want to leave.

Yup, staying has two major options:
1. Either you get f***ed up by the workplace and become a worse person for it.
2. You let your annoyance out and become a part of the problem.

Neither one of those is a good option.

I had a boss that would commit all sorts of fraud. Either by calling me in every day (which I hated, but I was a teenager and my parents were still able to force me to go) and in doing so he was going over on hours (while collecting his salary for the day and going home when I got there) or by returning defective second-hand products as new and giving the customer the new ones without processing a transaction (which was awesome for the consumer, but technically illegal). This is largely how his store maintained first place in the rankings...

It was annoying, but I didn't rat him out because he was a nice guy and treated me well. Then came the day he let me leave early (at close, rather than participating in it). He forgot to drop off the cash deposit (or was too lazy) and didn't put it in the safe (if there even was one). Rather than own up to his mistakes, he tries forcing a fake confession out of me with phony "proof" he has. My dad has held a bunch of federal law enforcement positions, and called bullshit on everything when I told him of the accusations, not to mention that I'd been with him in the yard the entire morning the theft occurred, in view of other witnesses.

As the line in Super Troopers goes, "desperation is a stinky cologne." He obviously knew it was his mistake and needed somebody to pin it on. Sadly for him, I didn't fall for his pathetic ruses and the district manager told me point-blank after the fact that I spent way too much money in the store and wasn't even a suspect (though the friendly rapport I had with him and the fact he hated my boss so much he made him cry once probably helped immensely). Everyone was to give their side of the story to both the DM and the lost prevention guy. If I hadn't been an attempted patsy, I'd have probably tried to spin things to help my boss, but that betrayal cut deep, especially as I'd known him for many years prior. I'm a fairly convincing writer, and what could have been "he was just being nice and let me go home early after a long day" ended up as "the night prior to the theft, I was dismissed earlier than usual. This had never happened previously and seemed suspicious" (true). I also felt it prudent to include every single ounce of dirt I had on him in my email, to ensure that my revenge was swift and merciless. Even if he somehow got away with the missing deposit, they were certain to investigate the other infractions, especially as the DM and LP guys both trusted me.

Long story continuously getting longer, he was on the hook for hundreds of dollars that had vanished due to his negligence and was, from what I was told second-hand, given the choice of being fired and losing his work visa (and summarily deported, leaving behind his wife and young child) or he could quit and absolve the company of paying him any severance (he had been there forever) and stay in the country. He apparently took the latter and I never saw him again. Rekt.

Epilogue: Just when we thought the mystery would never be solved, some gross meth addict was caught a couple of weeks later sneaking into the back room (where the deposit had been left and ripped open the next morning). The guy gave some lame excuse about being confused and then bolted. Nonetheless, the manager was supposed to take the deposit or drop it in a safe, he did neither, and had to fall on his own sword.

@TheCyborgNinja

I think one of the worst possible things to encounter in the work force is the nice person being the criminal, which is awful for a variety of reasons. Good thing you were able to dodge that mess

(Software engineer).

In my early days when I couldn't be as picky as I am today, I had a boss who would randomly stand behind me, staring at my screen and if I stopped coding for more than 5 seconds, would ask "Why aren't you coding?". He hated that I had to take time to think before coding (I was paid per hour at the time). He was a software engineer himself, and while he was definitely faster than me, he was still an hypocrite >.<

I worked at another place where, while I wasn't directly affected, they would ask some of the other software engineers to go directly in the database and delete all traces of some products we had (it was an online retail company) so they could "forget" to pay suppliers and just say it was a bug in the software.

Another company I worked for wanted me to work 15-20 hours a day, every day, including weekends, right after I was hired to make some impossible deadline.

In all cases I just up and quit. Not worth my mental sanity.
