My initial reaction is that the comparison has some merit, but I'm familiar only with broad strokes of the 19th century and the particulars are missing for me.

So theres a few reaches but this gels with what I have been saying about Trump for a while, especially in my assertions that congress can and will seize more authority from the President the more Trump dawdles and that that would be a major development.

The article makes several reaches and tries to connect unrelated topics (the end of isolationism and the rise of the Imperial Presidency under FDR were incidentally linked through his person and the two arent necessarily linked at all)

That said if Trump would just shut up and let his staff run the show the example hed be following wouldn't be Millard Fillmore, it'd be Eisenhower.

However since Trump does actively shy away from picking legislative priorities or seizing moral leadership the man is pretty Filmore.

Thanks, ed. I'm struggling with the thought that Congress would get any power back because the trend has been in the other direction for as long as I've been a person.
It's even more difficult to imagine by virtue of 45 trying to be a strongman authoritarian type. But i suppose it's kind of like a pendulum toward the end of its swing; the office of President will only get so much power before the trend is reversed?

In theory, I'm all for taking some powers away from the president. But i have no idea how congress is supposed to handle things. Can we make the bureaucratic agencies an official fourth branch? And remove the president as their head?

Congress actually took a big chunk of power back following Watergate (FOIA and the bull requiring the President to ask for Force Authorization being the big 2)

Trump has proposed a budget but I am willing to bet the budget they go with ends up being drawn up by McConnel.

The thing most people dont realize is that a sizable chunk of the executives power is derived from tradition.

The Senate Armed Forces Committee could begin directing the DoD with absolutely no legal problems mainly because a large chunk of the "Executive Branch" is already a shadow 4th branch of bureaucracy anyway. And this group has been serving as a sort of informal check on Trumps power by not implementing his agenda

I will agree that Trump himself is muddying the trends here - while he has been bleeding power to Congress the judiciary and career government employees he has been posturing like an autocrat.

As it turns out oir institutions are a lot stronger than Trump - and a lot of observers -thought.

A big part of this has been that McConnell - and not Trump - has driven the agenda and shaped it. Thats a HUGE departure. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi didn't have anywhete near this influence over obama.
