Not really as dumb as you would think. While I question if Legolas could hurt either, I am not entirely sure either of them could kill Legolas either (unless cloverfield gets his minion swarm)

eh, whatever, I need a break from homework

(Samuel L Jackson)

New Character/Ability:
Jules Winnfield may be selected as Customization, unlocking his terrain and ability.

Jules Winnfield as seen in Pulp Fiction. He comes equipped with Mr. 9 Millimeter and Ezekiel 25:17.

I'm Trying Real Hard to be the Shepherd (Start of Battle): If Jules Winnfield is selected and his terrain is chosen, a randomly selected post-rostered Villainous enemy will begin questioning his role in life. The chosen merc will, over the course of two minutes, slowly lose conviction in the battle and fight less and less effectively, until, at the end of this period, they leave the match to do some soul searching. They will be considering KO'd for the rest of the round. This ability has a one week cooldown.

Terrain
Hawthorne Grill - A regular, homey diner in Los Angeles. The immediate outside of the diner is accessible for up to 50 feet, but any areas beyond that are forbidden.

someone might want to rebalance the time and cooldown or reject it iunno do whatever

is somebody saving the last topic before it purges?

and if you're looking for mages, anime is the obvious place to look. everything from Lina Inverse to the Nanoha cast can be viable without looking too far. nevermind the amount of stuff based on light novels that's heavy on fantasy settings these days (e.g., Overlord, Irregular At Magic High School, SAO...).

and if you're looking for mages, anime is the obvious place to look. everything from Lina Inverse to the Nanoha cast

Holy shit no

no no no no no nooooooooooooo

Nanoha was a round 3 MPFC contestant that held her own against HORSESHIT entrants. Unless you limit to like, the first series (and maybe not even then, it's been a really long time) she is much, much too broken for this. I would take her to manhandle Gipsy Danger who is my benchmark for a 7/week with absolute ease. That verse has a really high end power level.

Like...I may as well write down what benchmarks I use per upkeep tier. Let's talk about this for a sec.

1/week: Ability Slave/Mook. You're not buying them to win fights, more for niche strats or ability spam. Big the Cat and Lanky are good examples.

2/week: Competent. Characters who can be useful in a low tier fight or as support in mid/high but are obsoleted by 4/weeks in any kind of offensive role (as in, if there is a 4/week on the enemy team, the 2/week pretty much will not matter due to getting murdered so hard their contributions will be obviated in the eyes of the voters). Your average white mage girl is a good example of this tier, as is Alyx Vance from Half Life 2.

3/week: Squad level. Can take out a bunch of trained mook gunners at once more or less casually. Most lowbie mercs should be on this level, because their battle worth is significantly higher than 2s and 1s are jokes.

4/week: House level. Can blow up a house with offensive capability. Actual superhuman/futuretech durability begins at this tier. Marcus Fenix is a good example of its low-mid end, Alucard a good example of its high end.

5/week: Army level. Can solo an army and make it look easy. Firepower at this level is high enough to hang with everything above it except the final tier. Sora is the top end, somebody like Thrall or Jaina Proudmoore are the lower ends.

6/week: Block level. Leveling a city block with singular attacks is in the cards for these guys. Kuja, Elma, MMX are all examples of mercs that go here. It's assumed that durability is high enough that they can take multiple barrages from 5/weeks - at this level, having a complete package of abilities becomes the cutoff point - Sora is just as destructive as Master Chief and maybe moreso, but Chief is way tankier and that's what makes him a 6 and not keyblade boy.

7/week: District level: Blowing up an entire city district in a single attack or a very brief timespan is doable at this level. Highest power level allowed in mercs. Characters MUST be this damaging to be 7s but also have to be super blinky so it takes multiple 5s to tag them, or so tanky that a 6 going all-out on them won't kill them quickly.

Ability Tier: City buster level. Dark Seraphim and Weltall Id go here. If you made a merc that is permanently this strong buyable, you fucked up.

Does everyone agree with this? I don't see a reason to compress or change these tiers because they seem clear and distinct, but maybe there's an argument for doing something else out there.

I would love to do a weird build but have no idea how to balance it.

Willow Rosenberg (accompanied by Tara)
Upkeep 1 - Takes up no Roster spots in battle.
Nerdy Willow and her girlfriend Tara will accompany the group into battle despite having no magical ability nor do they have any physical training. They will fight to the best of their abilities.

If Willow is rostered in 2 battles, Tara Dies.

When Tara dies, Willow transforms into Dark Willow. 7 upkeep.

"Dark Willow"

Willow was capable of flying, absorbing life and magic from others, teleportation, being impervious to physical damage, healing herself and others instantly at will, unleashing powerful energy blasts, locating people and objects at a distance (even when theoretically protected from such spells), emitting high-pitched shrieks in frequencies harmful to human ears, and exerting powerful levels of telekinesis and telepathic mind control. This mind control even extended to Anya, despite Anya's statement that vengeance demons were immune to mind-controlling magics. Additionally, she proved more than capable of going head-to-head against Buffy in a physical fight after casting a strength-enhancing spell on herself, able to show impressive strength as well as fighting skills though it should be noted that Buffy was holding back and before a decisive outcome could come about, Willow used magic. It is also interesting to note that even before she went dark, the immense amount of grief she dealt with affected her powers immensely, as seen with how she banished the deity Osiris with just a scream filled with anguish. Willow also caused most of the light bulbs in the Magic Box to short circuit and paralyzed Anya, who recently regained her powers, with a simple command. Finally, she was able to cast extremely powerful spells, as she single-handedly almost brought upon an Apocalypse by attempting to channel the power of the Earth and focusing it on Proserpexa's effigy to burn the world to a cinder, which was only averted by the timely intervention of Xander.

Return of Dark Willow

During her time in Quor'toth with Angel, Faith and Connor, Willow once again went dark, her veins protuding, her eyes gone black and the power inside her was made manifest in the form of dark energies circling around her in flight. At first, she was reluctant in using her powers, but once she let her dark side take over, she unleashed massive blasts of immense magical power towards the Old One, Quor'toth. Her own power easily matches that of the primordial demon. To defeat the monster, albeit temporarily, she used her powers to telekinetically lift a mountain from the surrounding area and drop it on the Old One. Before she could do anymore lasting damage, Angel intervened, reverting the witch to her stable state.

After Willow is either ko'd or rostered in a battle, Willow resurrrects Tara in results and is rehabilitated. Transforming Willow back to initial state. Resetting the Dark Willow cycle.

Extremely rough idea. But it is different than mercs we usually see.

season 1 Nanoha/Fate would get her ass handed to her pretty well by the mid to upper tiers.
As (the second season) is less a thing about Nanoha/Fate and more of the other cast, who are primarily the ones you'd want to look at.

it's in season 3 where things get wonky for the upper end of power there for a few characters (including Nanoha herself) but they ain't who you lead with, no. using your tier system, the vast majority of the cast is in the 5-6 range in the third season and very few are in the 7+.

The tiers are meant to be rough approximations of what level your salient point has to be at. Eric is meant to be a tank so if he can take house level hits he's fine as a 4. A DPSer should be capable of blowing up a house in turn. What would you suggest if not those? Because we need some kind of guideline for what the power levels are so everybody is in agreement on whether the mercs fit an upkeep or not, and I haven't see any other suggestions.

At least for VGmercs this was pretty much the one upkeep I was 100% confident there was agreement on. Pretty much all the 5s on this list: http://mercs2015.pbworks.com/w/page/90630326/Characters%20by%20Upkeep

Are army soloers in some way or another, even if it's indirect - Psycho Mantis can't just explode an army with psychic powers but he controls one during the Shadow Moses incident, for example, and an entire army of mooks fails to handle Talion.

....huh. this is significantly lower scale.
Subaru, Teana, and maybe Vita would be the highest end to fit. first is a mage-melee unit that creates roads and is mostly hand-to-hand, second is a mage gunner, third is primarily raw power. but the first two are the safest bets. in that order, Subaru should be manageable. Teana i'd have to see again but she generally didn't use big attacks (though she does have a giant beam one).

but higher end mages aren't the issue i'm assuming, it's the lower end ones that also don't totally suck?

Looking at the TVMercs upkeeps we have right now, the power scaling goes more like

1 - Gag mercs with sometimes really good abilities

2 - Guys who can kill the gag mercs with no issue, will have trouble with the 3s. Some human gunners, if badly respected ones (like Indy)

3 - Skilled human gunners, for the most part. They can, as said, probably take out a squad of mooks and be okay

Thus far we seem to more or less be in line with what we had in M4. Then we get to...

4 - Superhumans. They're probably not obliterating a house. They are however the kind of guy who would maul a 3 (a gunner ain't gonna do squat to Draven, or Jason). Top end being someone like Carrie who at her best can summon meteors and Elsa who can cause eternal winter, but it isn't a common feat for either of them

5 - Still not soloing an army, but could probably solo a platoon. See Predator, who...solos a platoon. The home of low level flying bricks like Hinkley and Mr. Incredible, and bigass AoE spells like Nix

6 - Might solo a crappy army on a good day. Like Neo beating up all the Smith clones. Still no city-block busters as was described, just very good "Wreck your shit" fighters, like Dumbledore and movie Palpatine

7 -*Now* we've got the city busters. Actually, we leap right past that "Can break a city block" and jump all the way up into "Mechagodzilla and Cloverfield live here"

Zelgadis Graywords

two mages who are also hand to hand fighters. former is fairly human in the end, though has a variety of magic (white, black, shamanism) that can get high level, though long chanting needed. neither has anything in terms of Dragon Slave and up in terms of raw destructive power, though both have something equal to it in strength. latter is half-golem and with it means he's got superhuman durability. field of magic is primarily shamanism. which basically covers typical elemental magic, astral magic, and a few weird buffs.
