"It can't browse the internet/use netflix/etc."

Let's be real. It's 2017, almost 2018. EVERYTHING else can do that shit, to include the TV you're connecting to anyway.

The Redundant Department of Redundancy Department is Redundant.

If the biggest criticism you can mount on a system is that, you don't have a criticism.

People like functionality and options. A console not having something its competitors have is absolutely a bad thing

Though yes, I grant you, not being able to browse the internet is not that big a deal. However, Netflix on PS4 has been great for me since I moved. My TV is not a smart TV, and my laptop doesn't have an HDMI port, so it's actually my only option for Netflix-on-TV without buying something else. That's a pretty big deal and it would be a shame if PS4 didn't have it but like the Xbone did.

Also I often wonder how much time/money it takes them to actually create those console internet browsers. Because it feels like it wouldn't be too difficult, and it's not like they have a huge amount of bells and whistles on them.

in 2017 if my console can't play netflix or youtube that sucks

PCs are just better in general though

I mean, considering how much computer browsers have problems and need to stay updated, and how websites change and have new demands over time, I'd imagine having an internet browser that works on a console actually takes up a lot of resources to develop.

I have too many things that can play Netflix and Hulu.

With that said, the only reason why I wanted it with the Switch is because it's so easy to go from TV mode to a tablet mode and the screen is a good size. It's pretty nice for Hulu. But I wouldn't say it's essential, and I wasn't upset that it didn't have the capability. Because ultimately, if I need that, my phone works better on the go (otherwise, I have to hotspot to my Switch) and my dozen devices can stream to a TV just fine.

I definitely understand wanting the Switch to have it, and stuff like PS4/Xbone definitely should

The only time I never really understood the complaint was when people complained the Wii didn't have either

Why were people wanting the Wii to be a multimedia machine

My PC and phones can probably run netflix but unless you have a smartTV a game console is the only thing that lets me easily run streaming services on the big screen.

I'd be pissed if I was Nintendo only but thankfully the PS4 is the best console and does everything I need it to.

It was the only thing plugged into their tv that potentially could be a gateway to movies and shows

It's less important now than it's ever been. However it's still nice to have.

The reason these things can be missing (Switch currently, launch PS4) is sometimes because they open up vulnerabilities to hacking.

Man its hilarious how resistant to this stuff gamers were back when the ps3 was coming out. "My gaming device should only play games!!". It was some real luddite shit.

I guess some still think that way

God bless the forward thinking innovators who foresaw consoles being the media centre of a living room. They've made things so much more convenient

That's been a constant complaint since GameCube and I think really only ended this year when the Switch came out and optical discs became illogical to use at all on the system.

Wasn't the Wii at one time the #1 most-used device for Netflix? And didn't Netflix's popularity therefore mean that Wiis playing Netflix were basically the single biggest portion of Internet traffic overall?

And I can see why too. Lots of people still didn't have HDTVs back then, and that pointer remote interface was sweet.

I really hate changing the channel and having to use a different mode of controlling the tv. PS4 i can play a game and then say "ok time for Hulu" without moving. If i want to watch CW i have to use the wireless mouse and keyboard for the laptop connected to the TV and change the channel. Used to be the same for CBS but they added and app for ps4 finally.

Yeah, which was initially baffling to me since the thing was literally limited to SD and no surround sound, but then when I thought about it, it began to make sense.

A shit ton of people bought a Wii.

A shit ton of people played all of one or two games on Wii.

A shit ton of people had to justify the purchase somehow!
