And she's lucked out SUPER hard. She managed to get the balloon that lets you double jump AND the legendary sword within an hour of each other.

And all of this is great and all... but she's hogging my laptop

I'd suggest Starbound to her. Then she'd never stop hogging your laptop. :P

That literally looks like Terraria but with spaceships. I'm not even kidding. If I saw that without knowing it's its own game, I'd think this was a massive update.

It has a ton more features than Terreria though. And endless planets to explore. And a storyline. I loved Terraria, but I'll probably never play it again instead of Starbound.

Disagree. I thought Starbound was a waste of time. It has a storyline, but that's pretty much it. Terraria has way more content IMO. Starbound just has a bunch of procedurally generated worlds and almost all of them are boring.

I enjoyed both Terraria and Starbound and have played them both very thoroughly. Gotta agree the worlds in Starbound get dull and repetitive. Terraria really dominates Starbound in the base building aspect, but being able to bring my ship (my complete base) with me into multiplayer with Starbound was great too.
For a one time run, Starbound does well. It has an actual story. It's not a game I would want to replay though. Once you've beaten the story, there's very little else to do.

"balloon that lets you double jump"

I don't know if you mean the Cloud in a Bottle or the Shiny Red Balloon, but both of those are common items.

"AND the legendary sword"

I'm guessing you mean the Enchanted Sword, which is fairly lucky but not ridiculously so. There's lot's of things you might luck out and get, odds are you'll find something nice.

This.

I think Terraria is best described as a 2d sandbox metroidvania with similarities to Minecraft. Minecraft is more focused around building while Terraria has a much stronger emphasis on combat. And Terraria's gazillions of items make it look like Minecraft has almost nothing by comparison.

yeah I wanted to mention more emphasis on combat but I hadn't played enough minecraft to truly know how much combat was involved. it felt little like a metroidvania game to me, but i've really only played the metroid end of that genre

The only similarity it really has to Minecraft is that you can mine and you can craft. Aside from that, it's what Person106 says. A Metroidvania loot-based dungeon crawler.

I guess to be fair I never played far into it. i've tried twice to get into the game but never could

It's fine. Everyone compares it to Minecraft.

I just feel making that the sole comparison is kinda misleading. They both do their thing in a unique way.

makes me wonder if I couldn't get into it because I was viewing it the wrong way now. I was focusing more on building shit than going out exploring and fighting things.

Yes, the similarities are mostly superficial, and they both have their own completely different feel.

If you want to build, it becomes much easier to build elaborate structures later. You get better tools, a much larger choice of building materials, and even moving your character around becomes a whole lot easier. But yes, the focus is generally on exploration and fighting.

aside from that I think what pissed me off was I was trying to assign this dude to my house, first it tells me I didn't have the required stuff to have someone live in the place I built. so I went out and got/built all that. and it still kept telling me I didn't have all the required stuff, and no matter what I did, I couldn't seem to get around it.

Terraria is great fun. I like it much more when more people play rather than just playing single player.
