I've finally returned to played Last Recode, and reached the beginning of Redemption. The Rebirth and Reminisce guides are basically cleaned up and ready for the big update, save for the final date, and the Redemption one is mostly cleaned up except for the actual walkthrough.

I think I've decided to do a short guide as well for Reconnection, just to wrap things up.

So... yay?

Once that's done I need to decide whether to finish up my trophies for NieR;Automata or to make room on my PS4's limited space and start up Tales of Berseria. Decisions, decisions.

Finally wound up visiting friends for the weekend, going directly from work to their place, which gets around the power issue (although it's possible I could even have it back now). The major downside is that it completely fucked up my community day for Pokemon Go, ensuring I got fewer charmanders and, worst of all, I evo'd the last one a little too late for Blast Burn.

While I was without power, I decided to start watching some movies I picked up on DVD a long while back and just hadn't got to. Finally saw the Incredibles (and now I'm hyped for the sequel), Monsters vs Aliens (I also enjoyed Megamind, but sadly both movies underperformed so they'll never get sequels), and Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

First off, let me say that Crystal Skull is probably my fourth favorite Indiana Jones film >_> I had heard people crap on it for years and yet somehow it managed to be even worse (but in different ways) than I had expected. The buildup for nuking the fridge was as hokey as the fridge blast itself, although I guess it made for a fun plot contrivance and the shower afterward was a humorous segue.

The villains in Crystal Skull felt completely pointless. Colonel Irina and Mac basically just stopped Ox from returning the skull so... Irina could return it instead, ultimately just accomplishing the same thing but getting a flaky death sequence in addition to it. And while the aliens *still* feel out of place in the Jones universe, I'm more okay with it than I thought I'd be going in. And seeing Cate Blanchett as Irina kinda taints my memories of her as Hela.

Granted, I still kinda wonder if I would have felt the same way about Crystal Skull if I had seen it around the same time as the other films. It does have some of the same goofy humor seen in the original trilogy (and my favorite moment was probably Indy needing to be pulled out of the quagmire with a snake)). The one knock against it -- and the same thing kinda missing from Temple of Doom -- is not fighting Nazis, although at least the Russians are also trying to put together a super-weapon.

My fourth favorite Indiana Jones was that prequel that came out in the 90s, though that was more like a couple dozen TV episodes plus four TV movies.

hmm

Raiders > Crusade > Temple > Young Indy >>>>>>>>>>>>> having an Indiana Jones lego shoved into your eye socket >>>>>>> Crystal Skull

Does that seem about right to everyone else, or no?

I re-read this a few times before I realized you meant "hate" not "have" >_> And, while I also have Nendos (as well as bootleg Nendos, including some impressively good knockoffs), GSC doesn't release nearly as much as Funko and it's not the same coverage (especially since the bulk of the Nendo line is just anime/VG girls -- which is great if you're into that, not so great if you aren't). Plus the style doesn't really work for everything.

As for Funko's Pop! line, I've made my opinion known quite a few times in these topics and elsewhere-- basically I like many of the ones with mouths while hating the lack of a mouth in countless others (excluding masked characters). And while you used "Pop!s" and "Funkos" interchangeably, Funko *does* produce a lot more than just the Pop! line and quite a few of the other lines can be pretty neat-looking (the Dorbz have been something of a complete waste, though).

Of course, one of my biggest dislikes for Funko is the overly obsessed fanbase. Funko features a lot of collectors who have walls of Pop!s which, to put it bluntly, is unsettling. Particularly since if I continue to buy several Pop!s a year, I might someday have a Pop! wall and I don't want to have a Pop! wall.

And, in general, I should note that while Nendos have interchangeable parts, I almost never use them and I kinda dislike trying to store them. I've never even changed the face-plates on my bootleg Nendo Pokemon Trainer Red and Cynthia (granted, I mostly picked up Cynthia for the Garchomp)

Crystal Skull is ... no. I pretend that one did not happen.

I like the Funko Pops, but I limit myself when it comes to collecting them (i.e. I try to get nothing but villains; examples include Dr. Robotnik, Dr. Wily, Sark from Tron, Ming the Merciless, Lo Pan, etc.).

My only thought for KH3 is that Tetsuya Nomura is, and always will be, the Rob Liefeld of JRPGs.

Speaking of Rob Liefeld: Enjoyed Deadpool 2, but I prefer the original.

Picked the Mordenkainen book for 5th Edition. For the most part, it reads like a compendium of ideas from previous editions that they are bringing back into the game (e.g. the Blood War from Planescape, the Giff race from Spelljammer, etc.). There is new content, but nothing extraordinary. The bestiary, in particular, feels like "Hey, Pathfinder did this, why don't we hitch a ride?" ... Still a fun book, though, and the limited edition has a great cover.

I hate those Funko Pop things with a goddamned passion.

I've got a few of them. I started by getting Claptrap from Borderlands and Chandra from Magic: the Gathering, then picked up Lo Pan from Big Trouble in Little China and The Dude from Big Lebowski. And then recently I bought Sark from Tron and Saruman from LotR.

I limit myself to ones that are significant to my personality or personal history in some specific way, though. So I'm not going to buy 200+ figures from games or movies or shows simply because they're pop culture references I recognize (and unlike my one friend, I'm never going to buy all four Golden Girls figures), but I might buy a few more if I happen across some that appeal or speak to my identity in some specific way.

(I'd probably buy a Doctor Who one if they made the Sixth Doctor or Peri, but they mostly cater to the New Who audience, so fuck 'em.)

I don't really go out of my way to look for them, though, so unless I see them in Wal-Mart or Barnes & Noble, I usually have no idea which ones have been released out of the 70000+ out there.

GanglyKhan posted...
Go spend the same amount and get a Nendo that actually moves about some and has faceplates and accessories.

To some degree, having accessories is more of a negative than a positive - that just means more crap that can get lost, or eaten by pets or small children. I still have some of my action figures from when I was a kid, but in almost every single case, if they came with accessories of any kind (be they added outfit gear, or weapons, or detachable parts), every single one of those parts are now missing forever.

A similar problem crops up with moving parts - the more points of articulation any given figure has, the greater the odds of that figure breaking at some point. So while it's a selling point for some, it can be discouragement for others.

But all of that sort of misses the entire point of Funko Pop figures anyway. They're designed as an overly stylized design that can incorporate almost any aspect of pop culture. They're basically nostalgia in plastic form. They're not really supposed to look like exact replicas or complicated models of what they're referencing, as much as they're supposed to look like simplified representations that have a similar style (allowing them to all relate to each other), while still being recognizable as the thing they're based on, and even potentially being abstract enough to border on being modern hipster art. They'd actually lose a lot of their appeal if they were far more detailed or complex figures.

As for Nendo specifically, as far as I can tell, Nendo figures are apparently obscure as fuck (I literally never heard of them before this post) and 95% anime-based (as far as I can tell from what the Internet is telling me), so it would be kind of understandable why most people wouldn't necessarily consider them an alternative.

To be fair, hurricane season goes in cycles, and tends to alternate between periods where hurricanes are rarer and weaker, and periods where hurricanes occur more frequently and with greater force. We've known this for decades, and as early as two years before Katrina hit meteorologists were talking about how we'd been in a particular calm period, but were about to enter a much more energized period where we were going to see a lot more strong storms (something I remembered when Katrina hit - I was like, "Man, they sure called that one" afterwards).

So regardless of whether or not global climate change is a thing, it has absolutely nothing to do with this particular attempt by Mother Nature to kill us all. It's apparently just a natural cycle, and we've all had the (mis)fortune of growing up and spending most of our lives during a lacuna period, so it seems way worse to us now that the trough is peaking again.

Plus it's not like Nendos are absurdly detailed anyway. The vast majority of their faces are fairly similar (ie, not distinct to the character) and the fact that their parts are interchangeable between figures (ie, the faceplates fit other heads, heads can be mounted on other bodies, etc) -- which is often used as a selling point -- makes them seem somewhat generic, the same as Pop!s.

I know I've mentioned them at least a few times in these topics >_> And, while it's generally an import, they get an okay-amount of coverage and can have shelf-space at places like Gamestop.

And, speaking of previous mentions, either I missed a defect on my bootleg Nendo Pokemon Trainer Red's main faceplate, something scoffed it, or the plastic mildly warped due to sun exposure, but there's a mark between the eyes now. Kinda annoying, but I was going to geek out and take photos of him on trails while hiking so he was going to suffer some damage eventually anyway. (Plus I paid like $13 shipped for him, whereas the usual MSRP is something like $40 or $50).

A lot of news today.

Roseanne was cancelled... again... after Roseanne tweeted some racist nonsense. People really shouldn't drink and tweet. She was issued a warning earlier this year about her tweets, but hatred can't be suppressed by threats of unemployment. Silly Disney.

Andrew Lincoln is leaving The Walking Dead. I quit watching years ago, so this isn't a loss to me personally. That show is hard to watch on a weekly basis. It's so dour. Lauren Cohen is stepping back too, but Norman Reedus got a 20 million dollar contract extension, so the show will live on, forever and ever and ever.

Finally Twitch is streaming classic Doctor Who episodes.

Yeah, Roseanne being brought back in the first place was the only (minor) srprise in the whole thing. Then they tried to make her a satirical talking head for the hardcore Conservative mindset, because, as we all know, that has never backfired and led those same people they're making fun of to actually relate or believe what they're seeing/hearing.

Oh wait! (Yes, yes it has)

So then she makes a comment on any medium, and the plug is pulled yet again.

There might be assholes on one side of the political spectrum, but the other is rife with idiots who set themselves up for more. Ugh... This is a sliver of why I hate politics and such bias in our media. This is, but, one more reason I don't like having it brought up in these topics other than a comment of "Do not do this. It is dumb." And it's been done and proven dumb since before any of us were born, even PO.

Geekmasters: Now in 4D!

In other news, visited the Newbury Comics in White Plains. Had seen a sign for the store while vacationing in Maine a few years ago, but never wound up stopping at the mall and had no idea it was actually a chain (or quasi-chain, the clerk said that it's not really a chain but apparently it's got 29 stores so... that sounds like a chain).

Prices in there were lousy. Almost picked up NECA's machine gun Mohawk Gremlin on clearance for $20, but didn't like some of the paint-work. Not sure I'll see it in a retailer again so I might just roll the dice on Amazon at some point (which I don't like doing because they could have minor paint defects -- and, more generally, it reminds that I kinda regret for not picking up the Daffy Mogwai when I saw it in a store at the Stamford mall. It's the only one I'm missing from the Gremlins 2 Mogwai lineup and the aftermarket prices are about four times higher than the MSRP plus the Mogwai are more likely to have defects).

I did see a bunch of stuff I don't really see at other retailers. They had the Super7 blind-bagged He-Man MUSCLE figures, which in retrospect I probably should have just grabbed. They had a Wonder Woman Nendoroid on display, which I didn't realize was out. Then they had one blind-boxed One Punch Man figures but it was like $4/box for an unpainted MUSCLE-styled figure which felt like it'd be a waste. (Plus at some point I really need to figure out what I can use for shelving for mini-figures since I have a lot at this point between Mystery Minis, Skylanders, Disney Infinity (which are larger and have obnoxious over-sized bases), etc.)

Oh, plus for a store with comics in the name, it didn't seem to devote that much floor space to actual comics. Kinda expected for something in a mall, though.

Roseanne was cancelled... again... after Roseanne tweeted some racist nonsense. People really shouldn't drink and tweet. She was issued a warning earlier this year about her tweets, but hatred can't be suppressed by threats of unemployment. Silly Disney.

Like I said in the topic dedicated to the event, ABC had full access to Roseanne's Twitter feed before greenlighting the reboot. They knew her history of making controversial remarks on social media. They jumped into that bed with their eyes wide open.... so why the fuck are they dropping her now for doing *exactly* the kind of stuff she's been doing for years? This is more on ABC than it is on Roseanne, because it was always just a matter of time before she made headlines over a tweet.

Yeah, Roseanne being brought back in the first place was the only (minor) srprise in the whole thing. Then they tried to make her a satirical talking head for the hardcore Conservative mindset, because, as we all know, that has never backfired and led those same people they're making fun of to actually relate or believe what they're seeing/hearing.

idk, NPR made her out to sound far more moderate-- just a frustrated blue-collar white working family. Have you watched much of the show?

So then she makes a comment on any medium, and the plug is pulled yet again.

She also got dropped from her talent agency.

I don't like having it brought up in these topics other than a comment of "Do not do this. It is dumb." And it's been done and proven dumb since before any of us were born, even PO.

Geek topics are sacred grounds.

I stopped watching walking dead half way through season 2 but my coworkers love it. I'm enjoying the show through osmosis with their loud conversations.
They also like big bang theory and think it's the greatest thing ever.
I showed them IT crowd and they said it wasn't as funny :(

To be fair, that's (allegedly) not why they did it at all.

Supposedly, Roseanne the actress has gone more conservative in her own life, so she wanted that to be reflected in how her character was presented, so she basically dictated terms to the writers and asked that the character's views were more in-line with the actress' views. The upshot of which being that the character's worldview seemed to be radically opposed to how it was presented in the old series (where she was fairly liberal), to the point of people suggesting that the new episodes basically had to represent some sort of alternate reality (in the same way the last season of the original show apparently did).

Admittedly, I have no idea whether or not any of that's actually true though. A lot of people have been openly gunning for her because she sort of admitted to supporting Trump even before the latest blow-up, so it's possible they fell into a Poe's Law trap and interpreted what was SUPPOSED to be a joke/satire for her actual views (and, to be honest, the same could theoretically be true of her tweets as well), simply because they want to assume she's "THE ENEMY", and punish her for it without bothering to think about any alternatives.

Though I find it hard to fault her for supporting Trump (at least during the election itself), since as far as I can tell, her (stated) motivation seemed to be relative similar to my outlook at the time - she picked what she thought was the lesser evil, because Hillary was, is, and has always been a repugnant human being. When you're handed a ballot and asked to choose between two large piles of shit, it's kind of hard to say that ANYONE made the right choice (and honestly, most of my condemnation goes to both parties for winding up in that position in the first place - neither of them should have wound up anywhere near the final ballot).

It's also possibly worth noting that Roseanne was joking (or not joking) about running as part of the Green Party as recently as six years ago, implying she still skewed fairly Left relatively recently. And she's made tweets even more recently than that that most would interpret as being fairly Left.

I could probably do more in-depth research and get a better grasp on the precise details, and get a better feel for whether she was serious or just trying to be an offensive comedienne (which has literally been the point of her entire career) who misjudged the socio-political climate and got crucified for it, but I won't. Because I didn't give much of a shit about her back when her original show was actually popular, and I can't motivate myself to give anything resembling more of a shit now.

So ultimately, I'm going to treat this story the same way I treat most stories I pick up via social media osmosis. I will ignore it. In a few days, I will completely forget about it. And for the rest of my natural life, I will not give a single solitary fuck about the non-story, while assuming that most of the people who do care on either side of the issue are idiots.

But yeah, in case I glossed over it in there, the real pertinent idea to take away from this whole situation is that I've always thought that her show was utter shit, and the only good thing that it ever had going for it was John Goodman, who should have been doing way better things than slumming it there.

There might be assholes on one side of the political spectrum, but the other is rife with idiots who set themselves up for more.

The only thing worse than the Democrats are the Republicans, and the only thing worse than the Republicans are the Democrats. They're like a mobius strip of suck, where no matter which one you're looking at, the other side is probably worse in some way.

Choosing one side over the other is just playing their game, and thus automatically losing. As a sage supercomputer once taught us in the greatest of all eras, the only winning move is not to play.

That is, unfortunately, the ultimate evil of a two-party system in a media-driven world. Every choice is the wrong one.

Aaaaand, if you go with a third-party off the wall candidate, you get Trump (which to be clear, was one of his points through most of the campaign).
Weeeeee nobody wins because you escape the system through a system that wants to be self-perpetuation.

Basically. Third parties aren't viable because the system is basically designed and maintained to minimize and neutralize third parties.

Extremely rarely, catastrophic events or political issues have been strong enough to unseat one of the established and entrenched parties in US history, but all that ever leads to is a new ass in one of the two seats. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. And the beat goes on.

I wasn't trying to make anything political. The topic isn't for that at all. It was just some news of the day. I'm trying to post more, and it was a headline.

It was either the Roseanne news or I had chicken Wings for lunch while my wife had a burger.

I just want you to know that you wasted the handful of last posts on a subject unrelated to geekdom. Thanks a lot! -_-

Also why the hell does traffic *always* suddenly pick up right at the end? As soon as people see we're getting close to the 500th, the activity pours in. Some of it is the naming discussion (we need a committee! ...and a committee to choose that committee!), but it just seems like everybody wants in on the act. Oh well, Geekamania will run wild...

As for the naming itself, we should *probably* start at post #400 instead of waiting for #450+.
