Yeah, we're on opposite ends of the spectrum here, almost. I like Archer alright, especially in light of this, but vastly prefer Shiro. Like. Vastly.

Also, I've been thinking about something extremely deep, philosophically poignant, and downright idealistic lately and I want to share it with my good friends.

Anyway, the anime I decided on was The Count of Monte Cristo: Gankutsuou! Do you guys remember that Romeo & Juliet movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes (it was Claire Danes, right?) where the story and the dialogue was all the same but it was set in the modern day, and it was critically panned? Well, this is sort of like that...except it's also set on the moon with a very psychedelic and eccentric art style. I don't even know how to describe what they're doing with everyone's hair and clothes here. I think I like it though! The plot starts during the middle of the novel, so they've basically skipped all of Edmond Dantes' backstory and how he became the Count of Monte Cristo.

Also, it might have the most subdued OP I've ever seen, coupled with an ED that would fit right in with Persona 5 (it's literally entitled "You'll Never See Me Coming," which is an awesome title for a song considering the plot of the story).

[don't read this Jeff, I don't remember if it's spoilery for where you are or not]: The reason why Shirou/Archer was summoned by Rin is that the special item that summons him is Rin's pendant (like Excalibur's sheath is used to summon Saber).

Yes, they explain how that works, although I don't know exactly when, so it might be better if Jeff Zero doesn't read it yet in case he hasn't reached that part yet. It's not a super huge spoiler at the point where he's at, but yeah.

For the most part they are considered different within the franchise and to the fanbase as a whole. That line kinda blurs is a few instances in FGO where Archer has some Shirou mannerisms, but that's usually chalked up to him mellowing out post UBW.

Because it's not modern day and pushes it so far into sci fi I feel like it makes sense that the style of dress and speech wraps around back to the era it was written in more or less.

Gankutsuou takes a story set in the 1800s and puts it in some vague future. So the Victorian style culture is somehow still fitting, whereas if they tried to make it take place in the modern day it wouldn't work imo.

Yeah. It adds spice to the story (mostly aesthetic) but it doesn't really matter and feels like a period piece anyway.

I thought my post about the show made it pretty clear that I've read the book!

But yeah, they started the plot at the point where the story stops just being from Edmond's perspective, which is kind of a shame because that part's really cool, but whatever.

On a whim I watched the first episode of Star Blazers just now and I'm torn between completely smitten and somewhat embarrassed

To be clear I'm talking about the 2013 remake of Space Battleship Yamato, which Funimation is currently premiering its dub for every week

Not the uh 1974 original

Anyway, the embarrassment stems from the aspects here that feel 1974-ish and not in a great way -- the soundtrack sounds like a heavily cleaned-up and remastered version of something only slightly less cheesy than Star Trek TOS music and that part where the doomed bro and his crew started singing was pretty cringe

Also I guess I can't blame a story this old but when the capsule came down to Mars and Hero Bro and his friend went to check it out I literally said to my tv, I said, "tv, that capsule is totally going to contain a beautiful woman" and by golly it did

But you know, dang, there's a lot to like here, too

The animation is great, the attention to detail in the space battle stuff is super-slick. It's all just very, very stylish. I dig the "HD 1080p old-school" character design too; it's a better riff on Gundam Unicorn (which is in and of itself really nice IMO)

And yeah, wow, that premise

Humanity has a year left before extinction because a mysterious alien race is bombing our world into oblivion; a secretive ship and hand-picked crew are sent on a highly dangerous deep space mission in a last desperate bid to save our species

I finished chapters 4 and 5 of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future last night. They were both pretty short, but they were mostly an interlude to set the stage for the next act. Layton travels back to the present to gather some information on the explosion that supposedly killed Claire, although as usual, he keeps everything close to the vest and doesn't tell us anything he's discovered. He talks to Chelmey about the case and tells him he thinks the missing prime minister has gone into the future, although I'm not sure he actually believes this whole thing is time travel because he occasionally exhibits skepticism at the concept.

The good news is that Flora is back, although Layton and Luke try to ditch her straight away. She, Chelmey, and Barton all trail them back to the clock shop and now they're all in the future! I understand Layton's concern for Flora's safety, but it's good to have her back! Just don't replace her with a body double this time!

honestly if Kiritsugu was elevated to heroic spirit status I'd have probably had to bail on this series

although there are evil ones too so I guess they could have made it work

Archer became that way after death. Shiro actually died as a hero and Archer became embittered and Kiritsugu-esque in his afterlife. There's a notable distinction. Shiro could've been considered a hero before death. Kiritsugu, not so much, despite what the series wants me to believe (although at least Kiritsugu himself recognizes he's no hero).

But uh yeah I have literally 4 episodes to go and he's still my favorite or at least second favorite character out of both shows so unless he suddenly reveals everything has gone according to keikaku he's definitely top tier

Oh ok not what I thought you meant. But yeah if I'm remembering correctly I don't think being labelled as a "heroic spirit" means they actually have to have been heroic in the sense that you're saying.

Also I'm not 100% how you define what a hero is so I won't comment on that specifically, but I definitely do not feel that Fate/Zero tries to glorify Kiritsugu's actions if that's what you're saying.

But all that means is that those individual characters look up to him. I'm pretty sure Rin in F/SN talks about how great a man her father was, but I don't think anyone is going to try and argue that he was heroic.

I think Kiritsugu's portrayal within the scope of the overall narrative is a tragically misguided man who's trying to be what he sees as a hero but is doomed to destroy both himself and everything he cares about.

Eh, I don't hold it against children for looking up to their parents, especially when they don't know the whole story. For all his other problems, Rin's dad seemed to legitimately love her, and Kiritsugu seemed like a decent dad to Shiro, too.
