I just meant Kirei is another character that knows what Kiritsugu really was like in Fate/zero. Though he probably doesn't care either way.

Oh right. Yeah, truth.

Jeff assuming you finished Gundam Unicorn which of these do you consider the bigger betrayal?

F/Z

I never bought them (tickets)

Unicorn

The marriage proposal hours after Merry-go-around

I only got like 8 episodes into my rewatch of Unicorn earlier this year before getting sidetracked. I've gotta start over. I was really enjoying watching it in show format (even though IIRC it doesn't actually add much content, or maybe even anything at all).

Even so... HOWEVER...

#Ticketgate is as bad as that (amazing) moment at the very end of Gundam Wing (but before Endless Waltz) when Relena tears up Heero's invitation

Fate/Zero

I don't think that was directed at me, but just for the record I do consider him to be heroic. If I were to quickly try and sum my definition of hero though, it would be something like "one who demonstrates the resolve to put their well-being on the line to do what they think is right". However, I don't think that what Kiritsugu thinks is right is always the same thing as what the narrative thinks is right or what the viewer is supposed to think.

Kerry did these things in F/Z (that I remember)

affair with Maiya
blew up a building with nobody except Kayneth and Sora-ui inside
killed a mentally ill serial killer that anchored a cthulhu monster to the world
killed Lucius Malfoy and his unfaithful fiance (part of the holy grail war with master deaths to be expected)
blew up a plane with ZOMBIE BEES
killed a necromancer
destroyed the unholy grail that would have killed everyone in Fuyuki
be a great father to a homunculus

In Fate.....stay night, The Saber/Assassin fight goes mostly the same way, although we get a little bit of Caster/Rider interaction as well, and Rider gets away alive, so that's a nice change of pace. Shiro and Saber continue to disagree over fighting, although Rin understands that he would rather take all the suffering upon himself rather than let anyone else suffer, even a Servant. Saber resolves to teach him to at least be competent, so they train and spar a lot.

Then we get a nice breather episode (the title is "A Quiet Interlude" so you know what you're getting) with Shiro and Illya having a friendly conversation with each other. Archer gives Shiro a hint about projection magic to help him in battle, which I suppose is some nice foreshadowing about his true identity.

I mean that's white people shooting themselves in the foot; that's okay

You have a really great multiethnic cast in the OT -- a bunch of white people, the galaxy's only black guy, a furry, some robots (Japanese no doubt since it was the 70s), a little green dude from Tibet, a giant slug from anti-American racist caricature tabloids

Finished Chapter 6 in Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. We're finally getting ready to go to Chinatown! Flora brings up an interesting question though: If there's future Layton and future Luke, then where is future Flora? I thought that girl who turned out to be Claire was originally future Flora, but I hadn't really thought about it since that theory was debunked. Since they haven't encountered her in town, my best guess is that she's with future Layton, although whether willingly or unwillingly, I don't know.

I was curious to see how future Luke would react when he met Flora, but he seemed to recognize her just fine, so that checks out!

I had no idea how serious before but I do now

Anyway, I just finished Chapter 7 in Unwound Future. Chinatown was a pretty neat location, although Evil Future Layton wasn't there. Apparently, he's fond of long walks by the River Thames, so that's where we're off to next. Present Luke and Future Luke have an interesting conversation about the nature of time travel. Future Luke might be Present Luke, but there's no guarantee Present Luke will become this particular Future Luke. That means we're not in a stable time loop, which is probably good news for Professor Layton since it means he can avoid becoming evil!

It's true. I've seen it.

Also, Unwound Future's dialogue is mostly unvoiced, but they seem to primarily want to use voices for scenes where Luke talks to animals. Also, the animals have the most exaggerated British accents known to man (or animal). What a strange directing decision.

I finished Chapter 8 of Unwound Future last night. Unfortunately, Evil Layton left the restaurant on the Thames just shortly before we arrived, so we barely missed him. Apparently, he always goes out in disguise so no one will recognize him, although he still wears the top hat, so I feel like that's a dead giveaway, no matter what else he's wearing! Also, we get a weird scene with a rabbit who escaped from a research facility or something.

The title card for Chapter 9 seems to imply that we're finally going to meet Evil Layton, so hype!

On Fate/Stay a While and Listen: Unlimited Powah, Shiro takes the red pill, leading to a dramatic multi-episodic confrontation with Archer -- AKA Shiro. I had thought that Archer could be Kiritsugu, which prompted fits of laughter both from a roommate an an online friend, as it were. (You kno who you are. Frankly, I've forgotten, and I'm too sick to go back and check.) But I also had that hunch that it might just be Shiro himself; I just had no idea whether the laws of this universe would allow it, so I veered elsewhere.

Archer's diabolical plan involves killing Shiro on the off chance it might save him from a life of pain. Actually, the way he words it, he's just looking for his own escape from that pain, which makes him more of a jerk, but still. It's a lot better explanation for his overall jerkdom than we might have gotten otherwise. I don't exactly love this character, but expect him to probably crack the top 5 for the series nevertheless because I do enjoy the relative depth put into him. And I find him better again now that there's been ample explanation for his antics.

Meanwhile, my main man Shiro gets his behind kicked into oblivion over and over again, but he never gives up. Ultimately (Bladely Worksly) this leads to a contest of raw will (which I almost always love) in which he floors Archer with his perseverance enough to prompt the guy to lower his blade and take the game-setting slash. Nice. Most of the drama in these episodes works really well.

Elsewhere, Shinji torments the holy heck out of Rin, who resists because she's #hardcore. Lancer pops in and does heroic Lancer things, cementing him as a cool dude for me. Heroic Lancer things, I want to note, including killing Kirei Kotomine. Since I watched Fate/Zero first, my perspective is super-biased which leads me to questioning if Kirei might show up again somehow. But he looked pretty darn dead to me, and if I'd seen/played/read Fate/Zero first I likely wouldn't be wondering this because I wouldn't be placing possibly undue importance upon the character, heh. So yeah, I guess he's probably down for the count. You know who else is down for the count? Shinji, I think, seeing as he just transformed into a bloatware freeware shovelware version of an eldritch abomination. I knew Gilgamesh was gonna do him in sooner or later, and it was every bit as satisfying as I'd hoped.

Gilgamesh, meanwhile, has revealed his plan to kill off most of the world and let the strong few that remain worship him as their king of kings. He also used the word "mongrel" (and "mongrels"!) again for the first time since Fate/Zero, which earned a standing ovation from the two-person couch crowd. (The cat was less impressed.) It's now up to Shiro, Rin and Saber to go forth and multip... hey, don't read that browser tab. It's up to Shiro, Rin and Saber to stop him and put an end to the Holy Grail War. I've got 4 episodes left and I look forward to 'em something fierce.

Stray thoughts: Assassin is still at-large. This is interesting. Although, this late in the game, I'd be surprised if he isn't just fodder. He'll do something courageous and then be crushed, I'm guessing. Also, Sakura really has been just completely removed from the board as a character, which is a major bummer. I get it; this is a certain path in the story. But having watched Fate/Zero and seen her clan built-up, not even seeing Old Fiendish Guy again is pretty rough!

All right, finished with Chapter 9 in Unwound Future. That was certainly something. The Towering Pagoda was so good I did it twice...! Seriously though, the Evil Layton turns out to be the time machine dude from the beginning of the game, although it turns out his real name is Dimitri Allen, not Mr. Stun Gun. Layton tricks Dimitri by...teaming up with Don Paolo, who took Layton's place before they entered the pagoda? What a weird twist, but I like it! Turns out everyone loved Claire, whether it was Layton, Dimitry, or even Paul/Don Paolo, and that's how everything is connected. Don Paolo was impersonating the "future" versions of Layton's former colleagues, so that explains that much, but it still doesn't explain how London's appearance changed so much.

Also, it doesn't explain who Future Luke is, and I'm feeling like Layton made a big mistake by letting Flora go with him alone! He could be on Dimitri's side, too! I mean, he can't actually be Luke if there's no time travel, and he's been trying to lead them to the pagoda the whole time, which Dimitri said was his goal. I guess we'll find out shortly!
