It's not, but you should probably listen anyways after a certain point since it helps set the atmosphere. Though I can get how it can be monotonous after a few hours.

They don't really care about your skills. This is just a mechanic whereby you begin to favor girls and go on their routes. A word will appeal to certain girls more than others in the poem; whoever is most appealed to by your poem (within some slight limitations that aren't really important) will be the one whose route you go on for that day. This can affect certain dialogue, scenes, and the endings.

A lot of the later soundtrack wouldn't have as much impact if you haven't heard the beginning though. Especially the end credits.

Make sure to go for Natsuki all the time in act 2 then. At least, just go for one girl in act 2 and don't halfass it. It doesn't really matter in act 1.

It's boring because it's basically creating a foundation/established setting to then do more interesting things atop it in time.

Then again maybe it was easy for me to accept this because I played and really liked Persona 4 and 5. And 4 especially I think is like...hours before real gameplay even happens. >_>
