So how would people rank Square's former near-elites these days?

I'd go:

Auron
Tifa
Sora
Squall
Vincent

I figure Kefka and Vivi at least give Sora and Squall a good scare these days (Vivi having of course already beaten Squall in 2013 but that may not have been a normal match), and there's quite a few other characters I'd be tempted to take over Vincent.

Both Sora and Vincent are no longer "near-elite" though that can change with KH3.

Bit late on Vincent, but in the adjusted 2013 stats I put together, Vincent was above a Phoenix but not by much. He was definitely weak that year.

You need Vivi in there. VIvi didn't do so hot in the earlier four-ways contests, so I think we ought to give Vivi the benefit of the doubt. Plus, FFIX's greatly improved performance in 2015 only reinforces the argument of Vivi 2013 being legit. Vincent probably doesn't deserve "near-elite" status anymore...

I just can't put Tifa over Squall, despite her looking stronger in the previous contest. Auron losing to L-Block... I still can't believe that happened....

Edit: it is true that Vivi clearly benefitted from his round 2 upset... but he was 7 percentage points higher than Squall. Knuckles probably gained 5-6% on Squall after upsetting Magus... And I suppose it's possible that Vivi's upset took more notice to voters, due to the low vote totals....hmmm.... maybe I'll put Vivi below Squall, then.

well Tifa and Auron have a direct comparison with L-Block in 2013

although I do think there was an L-Block rally or something in the Auron match but I don't recall

I don't trust Sora against a strong FF character at all though, at least not to win.

Based on numbers, his peak year looks to be 2010, but that Charizard number isn't totally reliable. He looked pretty strong in 2007 and 2008, too.

The playrate poll is also kind of biased. Having played one or two games doesn't mean you didn't like the series or that "it was enough". Maybe you're just getting started or have just had the chance to play a few games. I assume this affects the poll directly.

I struggle to think of a character that even *can* be nominated, let alone if they'd be strong.

I'd be scared of PUBG/Fortnite rallying to win if we had another games contest, but I doubt that's coming.

I'm rather surprised that PUBG has a lower playrate than Fortnite. Although I would blame that on PUBG only being available on Xbox One and PC (and also Mobile, but this site wouldn't care about the Mobile version) while Fortnite is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Although I guess it doesn't help that PUBG was still an Early Access Steam title at the time Fortnite came out and it took about 5 more months after the release of Fortnite for PUBG to leave Early Access and also get an Xbox One release.

Ignoring the poll from 2008, the "A laptop computer" option has been completely murdered by the rise of mobile phones. Almost all of the percentage gained by "A mobile phone" after the 2014 poll has come at the expense of "A laptop computer" with "A desktop/tower computer" affected to a much lesser extent.

Just to ask, who here knew about Undertale before the last games contest? I didn't and wasn't aware of the game's viral popularity in general. Honestly considering that I have no problem with Undertale rallying its way through the contest, but I understand why some on this board are disappointed.

Honestly though a contest with rallies sounds cooler than one without rallies in its own way. Imagine a Breath of the Wild rally vs. a Super Mario Odyssey rally!

Undertale was only like 2 months old when BGE 2015 happened; many people (including me) had never even heard of it by the time the bracket was released.

Resident Evil 1 finished with a playrate of 64.57% in the recent playrate poll, setting a new high record for playrate on this website. Starcraft also finished with a playrate of 47.92%.

Or maybe we could run two contests with the same bracket.... one contests involves all voters, as normal. The other one involves just votes from GameFAQs accounts. That would satisfy me, at least. I never expect that to happen, though

As for how it would work... I'm not sure what the best way to do that would be. The first round you could combine both results in the results screen, but when the matches differ in the following rounds... I guess two different polls would have to be done.

A direct match could be rough, but with RE1 having a playrate that high and over two-thirds of its players having played the much-better REmake, I might actually buy RE1 > RE2 like 2015 results imply.
