That Link silhouette looked straight out of Breath of the Wild, too.

By the way, props to the first person who can identify every character silhouetted in the logo. At a quick glance I can only make out Mario, Link, Samus, Bowser, DK, and Marth, but there are at least a half a dozen more.

EDIT: Kirby and Pikachu too.

I think it will probably build off Smash on Wii U, because there is little reason to start from scratch, making a bunch of improvements/changes with new stages, characters, costumes and modes. There will probably be enough going on not to have to brand it as a port.

If I recall correctly, there was a request for development help for 'Smash 4, 5, and 6' years ago. People theorized it to be Smash Wii U, 3DS, and Switch. So it's likely that the Switch version has been in development for a while and would likely contain very similar content to Smash 4.

Also, I just noticed the title is completely redesigned. I feel like if it was a port they would only alter the 3DS/Wii U logo just a little bit. Even if it was just removing the flames or something that would make sense, but it's a completely different font. That definitely seems like a redesign for a brand new game.

Wonder if they could do a version of Mario who can use Cappy to briefly take control of opponents, without making it horribly unbalanced by way of suiciding.

It's so much simpler than the one for 3DS/Wii U. Why change it so much for a port? Even it was simplified just for the teaser, look at the new cross lines going through the letters. It's unusual to make such huge changes for a logo when you're just porting it.

Its unreasonably exciting that Link is modeled after BOTW, seemingly as a default, haha. Changing up designs, and maybe moves, to reflect all the new games that have been made with these characters would be the coolest thing.

Nintendo lists it under "working title". It seems really unlikely they'd do that if it was just going to end up as "Smash Bros for Switch" or "Smash Bros Deluxe" or something like that.

my theory is it's probably neither a simple port or a full new game, it's going to be like Super Street Fighter 2 or something where they're building on an old thing but making substantial additions and changes

or it's just the Wii U version with a BotW costume and like three new characters. who knows

It will have been 4 years since the last Smash Bros. came out. And this doesnt require a separate version to be made alongside it, or to create the first HD version of the game. Not really too soon, in this case.
