How do you people define "new Smash"
An entire new roster, movesets, stages, mechanics, graphics, game modes etc?

Because of yes, yeah this is not happening.
It's going to include 80% of Smash 4 roster and include some new ones (like 10 or so)
Minor changes to moves (balance patches that they stopped making)
And same goes for stages
Mechanics and graphics will be exactly the same, same source code and engine of Smash 4
They might include a new game mode

But this is it.
They are not going to make a new game from the grounds up

Yeah, outside of replacements and Nintendo not securing 3rd party characters it's hard to see anyone missing out.

Smash 4 is only missing eight characters from previous games. Four were Pokemon (replaceable and 3DS couldn't handle Pokemon Trainer), Young Link was replaced by Toon Link, an agreement for Solid Snake wasn't reached and the 3DS couldn't handle the Ice Climbers. Wolf was the only character missing without a good excuse.

Fire Emblem, Pokemon and Shulk are the most likely to have replacements.

I don't think Shulk will be replaced. XC1 is still the more highly regarded game, even if XC2 has outsold it now. A XC2 character replacing Shulk would be like if they cut Marth or Ike to put Robin in.

Xenoblade is now considered a major Nintendo franchise so getting more than one character shouldn't be too much of an ask. Shulk has a unique enough style that they wouldn't want to get rid of and including a driver and blade combination from Xenoblade 2 would likely be a unique play style as well

Assuming this is Smash 5 and not Smash 4 DX, I think everybody on the on-disc roster is 99.99% safe except...

Ike - Giant Fire Emblem character selection and Ike and his universe are pretty far removed from relevancy in FE at this point. Questionable.

Lucario/Greninja - I could see one or the other getting cut for new Pokemon so there isn't a massive Pokemon overload. Both questionable.

Pac-Man - Depends on Namco's involvement. Very questionable.

Mii Fighters - Miis don't work the same on Switch as they did on previous systems, eliminating the ability to "add anyone to the battle" efficiently. Very questionable.

Lucina - Clone (albeit a popular character) and Fire Emblem overload. Very questionable. Possibly an alt costume.

Doc/Dark Pit - Clones that received a ton of backlash. Dead. Possible alt costumes.

As for DLC characters, I think Mewtwo and Bayonetta are the most likely to be included on-cart. The rest will probably remain DLC or be cut completely.

2018 is not fat away at all though and they can ride Smash hype for long if they want, which I would assume they would want. This is what mostly stops me from thinking it's much of a new game.

The whole 'cut someone in the series to make room for a new one' effect is overstated. It happened twice in Brawl and it didn't happen at all in Smash 4.

From comments made by Sakurai, the main reason that Mewtwo and Roy weren't in Smash 4 is because Smash 4 used data from Brawl to make development easier. Mewtwo and Roy's Melee data was so outdated that none of it could be used, meaning they would have to have been rebuilt from scratch. Which they were, when DLC came out.

This isn't how it works. The number of characters they can put into the game is mandated by budget and time, not a vague concept of slots. You know what would happen if they chose not to include Dark Pit in Smash 4? Nothing outside of Dark Pit not being in it. Another character doesn't magically replace him.

In that vein, getting rid of characters because they're not 'necessary' doesn't make sense. Everyone in the roster either has a unique moveset or is a clone who takes up no development time. Getting rid of clones and reducing roster size makes sense from a design standpoint, at least a competitive one. There's a sweetspot between having not enough diversity in your roster and having too much diversity. 58 characters in Smash 4 was a lot of matchups to learn, a lot of weird character specific stuff that sometimes didn't make sense that you had to remember. It was cumbersome.

I also wasn't even talking about who IS going to get cut. I was talking more about who I think should get cut or who I personally would cut.

Smash is far more of a celebration of Nintendo's history than a competitive fighters (this is said by someone who enjoys playing it competitively). There's a reason why it aims for as few cuts as possible.

It's not like Smash 4 isn't dominated by the same 10 characters in every tournament, anyway. The important matchups are easy to remember.

I guess it depends if you believe if there will be a limit to how many characters will be in the game.

King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match had 66, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon had 63 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 had 59. So we're already up there at 58.

Of course Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 has 161 characters and Tobal 2 has 200 characters so maybe not...

To be honest, if they did cater the game a bit to competitive players, what would be wrong with that? You know they aren't gonna get rid of all the crazy stages, items, time battles, etc. They're probably gonna expand on that if anything. But what if they added more stages without hazards and kept up with the competitive metagame to balance characters out? I don't see any issue with that. It's not gonna hurt the casual players if that happens.

EDIT: When I said less matchups to learn, that's just personal preference and wishful thinking on my part. I know they're probably gonna keep the roster larger, and honestly they can't go below a certain amount of characters at this point. You've got so many series to represent and most of them get multiple characters. It's gonna be a big game roster-wise no matter what.

read my edit, i clarified on that part.

my wish for a smaller roster is separate from what i meant on that post, i just meant it's dumb to say "i don't want this game to be catered to competitive players." It can still be competitive with a huge roster.
