"They're capable of magic detection?" "Yes, when they work together as amplifiers," you say. "Yes, we felt a large scale time displacement spell the fifth of February that year," Rebecca adds. "We made a note of it because we were always curious as to who used it." "February 5th is my birthday," Raven says. "And I did use a large scale time spell, though not necessarily on purpose. Are you saying you sensed all that?" "Yes," your sisters both say. "But time magic normally isn't detectable, because of how it freezes time," she says. "Well, our sense of magic is just that good," Rebecca says proudly. "Though I wish it didn't present itself as a flavor in our mouth," Roselind says. "That time magic tasted like cheese with coconut." "And then a few weeks after that," you say. "You two had that day where you were tasting something weird." "Yes!" they both say. I'm Rorek VII, I'm in charge, and I say we're keeping it a secret." Ross, Reed, and even your sisters, look at you with forms of surprise, with Ross being the most stern. "So you finally use that authority, huh?" Ross says. "Finally playing the Rorek card." "I don't like it any better than you do," you say. "But it's how this is going to go. Unless you insist on pushing the issue." Ross clenches his jaw, then huffs air through his nose. "Fine, have it your way," he says. The quiet tension is strong as everyone else looks at you and Ross while you stare down. At this time, Penelope wheels in the lunch cart. "Carter, finish setting the table," she says. "R-Right," he says as he snaps to attention. The Wilmarths finish setting the table and Penelope sets out the platters. "Ah, good, we're all here now," grandfather Sixth says. "Let's eat!" "Now, now, dear," grandmother Ruth says with a chuckle. "Everyone needs to take their seats." Everyone sits, with Ross and Reed joining Uncle Roger and Aunt Rita on one end, while your father and mother are on the other end. Your sisters sit next to Raven, who is on your left, and your grandparents are across from you, Sixth on your right. "So, let me see if I've got this right," grandmother Ruth says as she leans across the table towards Raven. "You live in California, but you were born and raised in a monastery that took in your mother?" "Yes," Raven says. "So I don't exactly have a lineage, but I do have training." "Well, more than I do, love," Ruth smiles. "That's right," Raven says. "Rorek, er, Rorek VII, told me these great family stories. You two met during World War II, while Rorek VI was healing." "Yes, I was the one nurse who would tell the fool to stay in bed and eat what he was given," Ruth says. "All the other nurses were too 'taken in by his charm' that they'd let him do as he pleased." "Which I think was part of her charm," Seventh says with a grin. Everyone has a little laugh at that. "Speaking of which," Sixth says, "are you going to let us eat now?" "Yes, fine," Ruth says while everyone else has a chuckle. "And you wonder why you had to go on that diet." "You had to go on a diet?" you say to Sixth. "So I gained a few pounds," he shrugs. "I don't get as much exercise anymore, on a count of my age, but it wasn't even that bad, really." "Just a moment, sirs and madams." He goes off to the corner to check. "Oh, it's from father," he says. You stand up, with your father and mother, but Raven also follows. "Raven, you don't have to meet them with us," your mother says to her. "No, I think I do," Raven says. "They think they're entitled to Rorek, but they're not. And I'm going to make sure that gets through to each and every one of them." "Well, alright then," your mother says. Raven holds her head high as she walks out of the room slightly ahead of you and your parents. "I like her," Grandma Ruth says a few moments after you enter the hall, which causes everyone-- including you--to snort in laughter. You, your parents and Raven walk all the way to the front door, where you meet Nadine and Bret. Your father nods to them and they nod back before opening the doors. On the other side, already chattering, are the 20 suitresses of the families. They notice the doors open, and then notice you, and all rush inside as they squeal and laugh. "Whoa! Whoa!" your father says as they almost bowl you four over. "Everyone, settle down. You'll all get to say hello to Rorek, just be patient." The suitresses obey and line up in front of you and Raven. Bret walks over to make formal introductions. "Riva Orville of Cardiff, Wales." The demure and petite brunette walks up in lacey dress that goes all the way to her shins. She sheepishly smiles and curtsies, but is even shyer when she looks at Raven. "Don't worry, Riva," you say. "She won't hurt you." Riva relaxes a bit, and shakes Raven's hand, then moves on with her parents and their attendants. "Rhea Vand, of Copenhagen, Denmark." Rhea shakes her wavy hair as she walks up to you in her light blue dress. "Hi, Rory," Rhea says in her airy Danish accent. "How haff you ben?" "Very well, thank you," you say as she shakes your hand. "Rhea, this is Raven." "Hi," Raven says. "Oh... Hello," Rhea says, a bit reluctant and confused. "Umm... And you are...?" "I'm 'Rory's' girlfriend," Raven says with a smug smile. "Gilfrend?!" It is a teenage Japanese girl with dyed-orange hair, white button-up, plaid skirt and matching tie. "Rumiko?!" you blurt. "Rumiko?" Raven asks you. "You never told me about Rumiko." "I didn't know she was going to show up!" you say in a panic. "Oh, yes," Bret says, "here she is on the list. Rumiko Hanamori, of Tokyo, Japan." "Rory-kun!" Rumiko squeals as she runs towards the front. "It'su been so long~!" Rumiko takes your hand, beaming with a huge smile. "Hands off," Raven says as she separates you two. "He's mine." "Huh?" Rumiko says. "Whato you mean, he izu yours?" "Raven, wait--" "Just like I was explaining to all of them," Raven says. "I'm his girlfriend. So you came all this way for nothing." "Oh no..." you say. "So...desu ka?!" Rumiko says, flying into a rage. "Whoa," Raven says as Rumiko starts hissing. "Where'd that come from?!" "Rumiko is first daughter of the Snake Temple's head family," you quickly whisper to Raven. "The very temple my ancestor made contact with, that I visited to learn Eastern magic. Rumiko grew a bit attached to me..." "No duh!" Raven whispers back. "Now, now, everyone," your mother says. "Let's all calm down. We were just settling down for brunch, if you'd like to join us." The various families, which now includes Rumiko's parents for a total of 21, all seem to accept your mother's offer, even fi they're all a bit upset. "Well, as far as the parents," she says, "why don't we all go to the main dining hall? The children can keep the veranda." "Very good, Lady Rachel," Nadine says. "I'll fetch the children to help." "Meanwhile, all butlers and maids, please follow me," Bret says. "We can sort out rooms in the guest area." Everyone goes their ways, as decided. Which leaves you and Raven to lead the suitresses to the veranda. As you walk, Raven walks close to you, wrapping your arm in hers. She glances back to smirk at the others, and they glare back. You gulp from the anxiety building inside you. "Guess what, everyone?" you say to your sisters and cousins as you return. "They're joining us for brunch." You and Raven make it back to your seats while the 21 other young women flood in and snip at each other over seating arrangements. "Wonderful," your sisters say together as things quickly grow crowded. "Sandwiches?" Renee says. "Iz this zome kind of deli we are eating at?" Roxanne snickers along with Renee as they sit together. "Sorry if you don't want to mess up those pretty little fingernails of yours," Raven sneers as she picks up a sandwich. "Maybe we can get you a fork and knife to eat these with?" Renee and Roxanne sneer back while Raven takes a delicate and clean bite. Everyone, even Roxanne and Renee, go along with the food choice, taking a half-sandwich for themselves, as well as a glass of lemonade as prepared by Penelope. "You wouldn't happen to have a sports bra I could borrow?" "Not in that size..." they say. The two sisters walk up and they both closely inspect Raven from opposite sides. Raven starts to feel very awkward with them staring so close. "These are real?" Roselind asks from the right. "Yes!" Raven defends, starting to cover up a little. "I think she has more than any of the other suitors," Rebecca says from the left. "Stop...!" Raven says as Rebecca reaches a finger out. "Becca," Roselind scolds while Raven puts her tank top on. "Well, I guess I'll just deal with not running around too much," Raven says as she brings out her running shoes. "Though I won't really get to break these in..." "Oh, here are the things you asked for," Roselind says. "Thanks," Raven says as she takes the mind-stones and other supplies. She picks up Slithersby's head and places the stone against it. "Vitae, Vitae, Vitae," she chants. The stone settles in, and Slithersby sits up. "Slithersby, stay," Raven says as she goes over to Domo-kun. Slithersby sits still while Raven puts the second stone against Domo-kun's head. "Vitae, Vitae, Vitae," she chants again. Domo-kun springs to life, raising his nubby arms. "Aww~...!" the twins say. "Now on to some Alchemy and Enchantments," Raven says. "What have you got?" "Moon dust for repairs," Roselind says. "Phoenix ashes for fire resistance," Rebecca says. "A small vial of dwarf drool for strength," Roselind says, handling it with both care and disgust. "Powdered Essence of Fortitude, for toughness," Rebecca says. "I know how to use that one," Raven says. "Udari Afari." Raven prepares a transmutation circle, and has Domo-kun walk onto it like before. She makes his cotton into metal, then uses the Powdered Essence of Fortitude to make Metal Domo even tougher. She repeats the process with Slithersby, making him into a steel snake and toughening him up with the Essence of Fortitude. "How does the dwarf drool work...?" she asks tentatively. "You have to rub it on the item," Roselind says. Raven gags a bit at the thought. "Don't worry, we have gloves for that," Rebecca says. "Good," Raven sighs with relief. She puts the rubber gloves on, then pours out some of the thick saliva onto Domo-kun and some on Slithersby. "Okay now what?" she asks. "Kuirnis Sornis Amaut," the sisters say together. The two stuffed animals, now Raven's metal golems, glow, and the saliva evaporates. "Did that do it?" Raven asks. "Yes," the sisters say. "Now Domo-kun and Slithersby will be strong enough to lift several kilos," Rebecca says. "Awesome," she says. "Okay, give me the fire resistance." Roselind hands Raven the pouch of Phoenix Ash, and Raven sprinkles a pinch on each of her golems. "Icalla Zacalli Blidiana," Roselind and Rebecca say. Roxanne fires very basic Arcana at the golems, but they withstand the attacks; Domo-kun does get knocked over, though. "Those little buggers sure are tough," Ross says. "But it'd seem like cheating if I wore sunglasses, so I came up with this. It also helps me do things like this!" Raven puts her hand on the ice and shoots out blasts of icy flurry! Roxanne squeals and runs away, then chucks Arcana at Raven. Raven swings the ice around her while shooting Arcana to counter. "Arcana Gemini, Melleo!" Raven says as she fires off blunt energy. The ice then swings back around to shield Raven again while Roxanne uses basic Defense Spells to shield herself. Roxanne throws more Arcana at Raven, but she swings the ice around as she evades. Roxanne quickly summons a wolf, and sends it after Slithersby, which still pursues her. Her wolf, in its soft purple, wrestles with the metallic Slithersby. However, Slithersby wraps itself around the wolf and constricts it. The wolf cracks from the strength of the steel snake, and the summon is broken. "Rather ruthless," Ross says. "They're constructs, no harm done," Reed says. Raven moves in towards Roxanne's right, and Roxanne seems tired already. Using that Summoning Spell must've used up a lot of her mana. She fires one big Disorientation Spell, but Raven's ice window again refracts and voids its affect on her. "Hein?" Roxanne says as she looks down. Domo-kun has grabbed one of her legs! She tries to shake him off, but being made of metal, he's very heavy. "Let go, you little creature!" Roxanne shouts. "Arcana Melleo!" Raven says as she fires off another blast. "OOF!" Roxanne lets out as the blunt energy hits her in the stomach. Roxanne doubles over and falls back on her butt. Rumiko gathers the air around her, clearly preparing her Typhoon style. Raven sends Slithersby on ahead, but Rumiko stomps her foot. A Summoning circle comes from her shoe! And with it, Rumiko summons a tiger in red and white! "She can Summon?" Reed says. "And a tiger?" Ross adds. "That's high level." Rumiko's red tiger leaps at Slithersby, slapping him with its paw. Slithersby rolls and corrects himself, but the tiger then pins him down. Slithersby wraps itself around the limbs, but this tiger is very sturdy, and simply swings and slaps Slithersby around. Raven herself has moved, but Rumiko keeps an eye on her. Raven touches the ground with both hands, and you can tell she's using Druidic magic. The grass seems to surge and swell, so she's using Nature magic. The grass springs up to grab at Rumiko, but she gives up one hand of wind to cut it all away. She moves away with handsprings and flips, while maintaining the gathering of wind in the other hand. Raven takes a deep breath, and mana gathers in her throat! "HOOOO~!" The bear swipes at two or three, but they're just distractions while the others head for Rumiko. "Chikush!" Rumiko growls.
