The Planetarian anime does pretty much cover the entire VN. If you want to true end you need to listen to the Drama CDs or watch the movie version which mixes in some of the Drama CD content into the VN content.

78. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Mac (5/5)
MHR0PyW

To be honest, I don't remember a ton about this show. I remember liking it a lot at first, but then getting bored with it after a few episodes and overplaying my disdain because it was popular. It's about a girl who makes a pact with a demon cat thing to become a magical girl, but shortly finds the cost of doing so is grave. It's the show that spawned these "dark" magical girl shows that sill pop up every season, and as far as I know, i's the only one people actually like.

As for me, I was super intrigued by the concept initially, and felt it delivered for the first few episodes. Through Mami's death I was pretty into the going-ons. But after that, I just got bored with the execution, and it ultimately became something I watched simply because I was newish to anime and it was airing. I did finish it, but I couldn't tell you much about how it ended.

I do have the movies on my laptop, so I plan on watching them sometime. I'm sure I'd like it better now that I'm older and it probably cuts out a lot of unnecessary fluff. We'll see I suppose.

77. Kara no Kyoukai (2007)
Roba (5/5)
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/typemoon/images/b/b2/Mirai_fukuin_kara_no_kyoukai.jpg

This is a popular Type Moon film series following the exploits of certifiably badass protagonist, Shiki Ryougi. There's probably some grand, overarching plot to discuss, but I found it extremely hard to follow, and, therefore, dull as hell overall. I'm mainly in it for the cinematics. Incredible animation and music makes for some of the most beautiful and fluid action sequences in the medium. When people praise ufotable's talents, this is one thing I can agree with. They're damn good at creating scenes.

But yeah, cool visuals can ony get you so far, especially when I want to like the series more than I do. As I said, Shiki is a fantastic character, and watching her throughout the series is fun. Not huge on any of the other recurring characters, unfortunately, but Shiki gets the most screentime by far, so it's no huge issue. My favorite film was 5 by far. Tomoe's tragic story was one of the few large plotlines that kept me engaged, and I feel that it can stand on it's own amongst other films as a masterpiece.

So, obviously, I don't hate KnK. I don't even dislike it, except for that boring-ass epilogue part. It's one of those series where it's just clearly not my thing, and, had 5 not been so damn good, I doubt I would've finished it. Anyway, might as well do a ranking since that's what you're supposed to do with film franchises I think.

I nominated this because you were one of the few who seemed to agree with me that these movies weren't all amazing so I wanted to see your thoughts. Obviously I liked them a lot less than you did (7 in particular is absolute trash and I don't understand how anyone can like it, but at this point I know better than to rant about things so I'll move on). Most of the rest were just confusing and/or boring, largely for the reasons you said. It did have good production and action scenes, though.

This was too long ago for me to still feel passionate about it and we probably shouldn't turn the topic into a long discussion about this but if you're curious (KnK movie seven spoilers) The glasses dude was like "Shiki don't you dare kill this mass murderer, killing is always wrong and I'll never forgive you", which was extra stupid because it's not like they had some other plan to deal with him. I'm also of the opinion that sometimes people just need to be killed so this element didn't work for me at all, especially since Shiki had already killed people by this point in the story and he didn't care, and he didn't care when that other girl killed people in movie three but oh well. Then Shiki tries to deal with the killer but she's handicapped because she can't kill the guy so of course she gets captured and the killer starts undressing her and drooling on her in one of the most uncomfortable, meaningless scenes I've ever seen. Then the glasses dude tracks her down only to get taken out by the killer, fed a supposedly lethal dose of drugs (which doesn't kill him for some reason) and then he's stabbed in the head (but of course the mass murderer didn't kill him, it's not like he's good at killing people or anything and of course he didn't check). Then Shiki kills the mass-murderer anyway and the glasses dude stumbles in and is like 'lol that's fine I forgive you' so that whole awful build-up didn't even amount to anything. It was like the movie was designed from the ground-up out of plot elements and character motivations that I wouldn't have liked even if they were handled well, and they weren't handled well at all.

Plus one of the major plot elements was literally a Simpsons joke. A drug ten times deadlier than marijuana!

76. Rurouni Kenshin (1996)
WhiteLens (3/5)
b7Rz41x

This is the story of Kenshin, a once notorious assassin who embarked on a journey of repentance by helping out the weak in need. It's a classic tale of love and war in the age of samurai, one of the most influential and important works in the medium, and inspiring many shounen to this day.

That's probably my biggest issue, though. I didn't see Kenshin until after seeing quite a few other shounen that were a lot shinier in the action department. That's not to say Kenshin doesn't have a lot of really cool battles, since it does, but few really stuck with me and I have trouble recalling how any of them fully went. I do think it tells a story better than a lot of other shounen, but when i watched it, I wasn't super into the storytelling aspect of the medium. Plus, the best part of the story by far is hidden in a separate OVA relegated to 4 episodes among nearly 100 others. I was all about that integrity back then, so I did watch all the ending filler, and man, I don't remember any of it.

Of course, you can't talk about Kenshin without talking about the creator, who likes child pornography. Kinda put a damper on my feelings about the show nd had to drop it 75 places. 'Tis a crying shame, I do say.

75. Nichijou (2011)
Xeybozn (3/5)
NpuX4t8

This show kinda bothers me because I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with it. I think the first half or so is pretty fantastic, but everything after that was mostly a miss. The biggest annoyance was Yuuko,my favorite character for so long, who became insufferable in the latter half. I dunno if it was because Id just gotten tired of her schtick or what, but it was pretty disheartening.

And I think that can be applied to the entire show. Its a bunch of random humor, focused on being over-the-top, relying a lot on its voice acting. And I think they do a fine job for the most part, it just wasnt able to retain the quality for me past a single cour, much less 26 episodes. I did like Sakamoto a lot throughout, and I always found the experiments Hakase did on Nano were the shows best parts.

74. Hanasaku Iroha (2011)
pyresword (5/5)
https://images3.alphacoders.com/650/650837.jpg

This show is about a high school girl who gets abandoned by her mother and decides to work at an inn to fend for herself. It's mostly an episodic slice of life about beautiful friendship and all that fairy tale garbage, and it works pretty well! I remember, when this began airing, the anime topic was hailing this as the next big thing. Though, by the time the latter half began rolling in, those praises fell a bit flat, and nearly everyone had some sort of middling opinion in the end.

I was one of these people, and I think the reasoning behind the drop in quality lies within the characters. Obviously, I' speaking about a 7-year old show that I gave a 6/10, so forgive me if I screw something up, but most of the character development happens in the first half of the show, leaving the second half to stumble along to the finish line. Ohana was a lot of fun at first, but that didn't really carry over to a full two cours, and it resulted in a show that I got a little tired of. Still, it's not a bad slice of life. It's funny at times and has a pinch of melodrama to keep things interesting, but I think it would've been better at 3 episodes.

73. ef ~A Tale of Memories~ (2007)
Mac (4/5)
https://www.critical-kohai.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Ef1.jpg?be26f0

ef is a romance anime from Shaft known exclusively for not being directed by Akiyuki Shinbou. It's about the love that blossoms between two high schoolers, and the tribulations that occur. Not only is there a harsh love triangle, but the main love interest has a mental condition that causes her to lose every memory created from the previous 13 hours. There's a secondary romance as well, but I actually remember none of that, so HERE'S ANOTHER SHITTY WRITE-UP OH BOY.

The main problem I had was with the characters, in that I didn't really like them. Chihiro's case is a tragic one for sure, but her problem doesn't allow for a ton of outward development. Secrets just kind of bubble up to the surface. Miyako really annoyed me, but I was 16 so it was probably misogyny getting in the way of me trying to understand her anger. And then there's Hiro who's just plain dull. It does have a pretty sweet story though, where Hiro and Chihiro end up creating a novel together, working past Chihiro's ailment, so that was nice.

I did absolutely adore A Tale of Melodies though. I was a little older and more experienced with anime romantic dramas when I viewed it, so it's probably worth returning to Memories and seeing if I enjoy it more. Every character in Melodies was great to me though, so who knows?

72. Air
TRE (3/5)
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fVtQd4LTbXU/maxresdefault.jpg

Another show from way too long ago that Ill try to remember for you guys, but prepare to call me shit at anime. Air is about a JRPG character who moves to the countryside and meets a bunch of high school girls. I think it tries to go through every route from the VN, or at least covers a chunk of them, but without the banging. It makes for a bit of a disjointed story, which is kinda what happens in Clannad, but more on that later, since I actually remember a lot of that show.

Anyway, I remember the plot twist was that the main character was actually a bird or something? That was kinda dumb. But maybe it was actually brilliant? Idk, I was sixteen. I am just now remembering how ugly the character art is, however. That is some atrocious stuff. Not sure how I could stomach that, since there's no way I make it through in this day and age.

71. Love, Chuunibyou & Other Delusions! (2012)
Roba (4/5)
https://i.makeagif.com/media/7-09-2015/Qi-7mj.gif

This is a comedy about loser teenagers who still like to play make-believe and act like they have superpowers. It's a show I'm quite conflicted about, as the comedic portions are pretty damn good, but it has a tendency to dip into drama, which ranges from bad to downright embarrassing.

I think the show's strongest aspect lies within it's cast. Everyone is pretty funny in their own way, and it's fun to watch them interact. I especially liked Dekomori's obsession with Nibutani aka Mori Summer, since Nibutani's character concept in general is pretty great. There are a lot of fun moments in the show, but it's unfortunately ruined by the drama.

The ending in particular bothered me a ton. See, Rikka is chuunibyou as a means of coping with the death of her father. This is obviously extremely unhealthy, and the show goes to great lengths to show that such behavior is bad. But at the end of it all, they basically decide that her acting the way she does is just part of her quirkiness and that she should keep doing it. I mean, I'm probably not explaining it well, since it's been a while, but the fact remains that they essentially supported the idea of bottling your feelings behind unhealthy lifestyles, at least in my eyes. It was probably done so they could make sequels, and it wouldn't make for a very good sequel if your main draw is suddenly mentally stable and in a healthy place. Either way, it completely turned me off of checking out said sequel, even though I liked the show a good deal. One of the few instances where an ending felt like it impacted my overall enjoyment of a show.

Picking a least fav is tough, so many. For me it's usually bottom of the barrel movies like Angel Cop etc, stuff that I really remember being baffled by. Shows I don't dig I usually just drop a few episodes in, less of an impression. If I had to think of a least fav series, hmmm I'm gonna go with the Ninja Scroll TV series.

Air I did enjoy somewhat, and it's not really up my alley, so props to Air for being watchable I guess! But I don't feel that strongly about it folks. I gave it a 7 on MAL!

70. Dragon Ball Z (1989)
SeabassDebeste (4/4)
UOtAFpe

DBZ is, without a doubt, the biggest anime to ever hit the United States. Nothing out there is as far-reaching and iconic as this show. It is, however, one that I haven't seen a whole lot of, and don't know if I ever will. When I was a kid, I didn't have Cartoon Network at home, so all of my anime consumption was from WB and Fox. I did get to see DB on occasion, when I would visit my Grandpa's house, and I fucking loved it. It's a show where I remember more about from when I was 7 or 8 than show's I saw a few years ago, which is a testament to how memorable it is, I guess.

Unfortunately, I can't really rank it much higher, even though I only really have fond memories, since I've seen so little of it altogether. Frieza was always my favorite villain, and the introduction to Cell was terrifying. I always got sad when they killed characters off, but they would usually come back at some point. There were a number of tournament arcs that I don't think I ever saw fully, but they were always fun to watch. I remember the Hercule vs. Android 18 battle making me laugh my ass off.

I've always been interested in watching this show in full, but the sheer volume of episodes always turns me off. I know Kai helped to remedy the issue a bit, but you still have 150+ episodes of the original series, 150+ episodes of Kai, then however much Super is continuing to add. I just don't see myself ever getting through that much content. I'm sure if I had Toonami as a kid, I'd be way more into the show these days, but now, it rests as a childhood memory, and not much more.
