Come on trump say you support this and so many people will throw their hands up and declare you greatest president of all time (GPOAT)

Plus youd be totally sticking it to Sessions persona non grata

Literally the only losers in the scenario where this thing passes(it wont) are the pharmaceutical companies

Any politician that puts their name on it will see their numbers go up. Guarantee if you take a close look at any politician that ends up being outspokenly against it you can find that theyre directly taking huge funds from a company that produces fentanyl

To be clear: this is good for people who don't smoke weed because then people can actually do medical research on it and can make it useful for sleep medicine, or pain relief, or anything else.

Buuuuut, that bill is going to have so much garbage attached to it it's going to be crazy.

Not only that but currently state laws are set up so that a huge portion of the money made from the stuff goes towards education funding

And surprise surprise all the states where they are actually funding schools properly are seeing dramatic decreases in crime

didn't read the articles so idk if true but i've seen posts on facebook (articles being posted) saying trump is going for it. now the only thing is its just decriminalizing at the federal level and then letting the states decide. so really it wouldn't change much where I live, and probably lots of places. I mean its illegal on the federal level but it didn't stop colorado or washington. any other state could have followed in their footsteps.

And prison companies, because for-profit prisons are great and totally haven't been lobbying to have drug offenders jailed for easy money.

Will never happen under Trump. He's clinging way too hard to the evangelical and hard-right vote right now and he knows which side his bread is buttered on (witness his flip-flops on everything from abortion to gun control).

Maybe if he was a more popular president he'd go for it, but he's not going to risk his already-tenuous support courting a crowd that probably wouldn't vote for him even if he did support legalization (witness that he claimed he did during the election campaign and still performed poorly in the demographics where weed is the most popular).

I'm 100% on board with legalizing it but I think introducing a bill to legalize the entirety of the substance is a mistake. It's not going to pass.

They should be starting with legalizing medical use and medical research. The fact that any state doesn't allow it is dumbfounding.

Legal weed sucks. Stuff that used to be like $35 is now closer to $60-70. Medical was way better and the growers were actually making money doing it. Now so many of them are jobless. Also, I dont want to pay taxes to a bunch of dipshits who dont know how to use it.

And wouldn't decriminalizing it help facilitate that? My understanding is that would assure the states with legalization won't have to worry anymore about the possibility of the feds being on their back. In states without any legal weed, I assume this bill still wouldn't allow the establishment of dispensaries without further legislation.

A few folks I know are not against legalizing marijuana. They just want some system in-place to check for/catch folks who drive while high. To my understanding, and please correct me if I'm wrong, even if one isn't under the influence at the time, it'll still be in their system for sometime later, right?

Wouldnt the systems we already have in place to catch people driving drunk be effective? A breathalyzer wont show someone is high but a cop would be able to observe all the signs

That was my assumption. I honestly am not familiar enough to know how one would check and prove said person was driving under the influence of marijuana.

not the point i was getting at, like AT ALL.
just saying that the numbers you read on this shit are gonna be skewed by whatever side is reporting them. looking at denver specifically, people against marijuana would probably be more inclined to tell you about the increase in traffic accidents and fatalities.

those same people would be neglecting to tell you that the population has also made a rapid increase, leading to more traffic, and causing more accidents. sure, the abundance of a mind altering substance is having some effect, but not as much as they are trying to make you think.

same thing could be said about crime rates and public education funding. sure the two are linked, but there are a ton of other factors to consider as well.

either way, its hard to make the argument against taking money out of criminal hands, and putting it into small businesses and tax revenue.

but to your point, sure. public schooling is so far beyond fucked in this country that i probably would be in favor of moving more towards privatization. anyone who has spoken to me about anything knows i am in favor of privatizing just about everything.

There you go making up your own narrative again because youre consistently mad about something

Im not saying that all politicians would win or that all voters support it, that is a deliberate misunderstanding on your part. What I am saying is that practically any politician would indeed see a rise in their approval numbers because the number of people who arent as politically active would be interested in this development and would support it or be ok with it would far outweigh the minority of folks who would firmly be against it. By far modern studies show the majority of people in the US support legalization.

thing is, the amount of marijuana that technically puts everyone over the limit is a set number, but the amount that would actually make any individual truly drive impaired varies so much from person to person that roadside sobriety tests would be the only way to tell. problem with that is, marijuana doesnt impeded the same functions as alcohol so you would have to come up with a whole new test.
