David Cage games aren't really my thing, but I honestly think they're a really cool idea and I respect the fact that he's all in with them.

Are they perfect? Obviously not. At least they're different and have really high production values. For a certain subset of people, they're probably great.

I thought Until Dawn, which took a lot of influences from David Cage, was excellent.

I think most people would argue that BTS is the weakest DC game, so it's not exactly the standard bearer for his design ethos. Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain are really the two big ones.

Indeed, Until Dawn was fantastic. A Way Out is similarly really good.

My big problem with David Cage games is that it seems like he doesn't learn anything between releases except how to spend more money.

Heavy Rain was okay. I'd say 5/10 maybe 6/10 just because of the SHAUN! Glitch

Deeply flawed in terms of poor story and awful awful game design but it had some good ideas and the people making it seemed to actually care about it, it felt like a passion project.

Beyond Two Souls just felt like a boring trainwreck from start to finish.

Of all the games I have ever actually completed, Beyond Two Souls is probably the worst game I've ever played.

It's practically the same basic structure of "interactive movie" where choices impact the flow of the story. Until Dawn had a better setting and characters, though.

No choice affected the story in Until Dawn. Just like in every "choice" heavy game

It solely affected who lived and died. Which is why it worked.

Out of the four released David Cage games, Heavy Rain is the best, in my opinion. It still has big problems, and falls apart at the denouement, but the murder mystery aspect keeps you well-invested.

Beyond Two Souls is a lot of potential talent wasted around a creepy Ellen Page obsession and a rather odd insistence on nonlinear storytelling and holding to the "game overs are a failure of the game designer" philosophy.

Indigo Prophecy is awesome for the first two hours, but it falls apart quick.

Omikron is... it just is.

I have two big worries about Detroit. One, it's been done, and by people with far better writing credentials. Two, word coming out of Quantric Dream is that it's a shithole to work in.

Omikron was ridiculously ambitious for a game from 2000.

Way, way, way, way WAY too ambitious for the technology available at the time. Granted, I played it on Dreamcast and not PC.

Big kudos for an exclusive David Bowie song, though.

I dunno, I actually really respect what Omikron tried to do. It was at least a decade ahead of its time, if not more. It had a lot of concepts that weren't even conceived of at the time but became industry standards. It's not a good game but if you go back and play it now, realizing it was a game programmed in 1999, you'd be completely floored by the concepts Quantic Dream came up with in that era.

The idea of an open world, nonlinear game with optional sidequests with passive storytelling is kind of crazy for 1999

In essence it's the idea that if a player fails at a task that you as a game designer made, then that's a failure more on your design than on the player.

Interpreted a certain way, one could say it means that a game designer should strive to be fair in the challenges presented to the player.

Interpreted the David Cage way, it means that you make a game (like Beyond Two Souls) where it's impossible to have a fail state, even in places where fail states would be largely expected, like a war zone.
