Oh yea I guess I'll say I actually decided to start the daunting task of Hunter x Hunter 2011 since I was on a roll with One Punch Man. 2 episodes in and I feel like Gon is like, TOO likable so far? I'm sure that changes in the fuckin 140 whatever episodes I have left but yea. No idea how long it'll take me to go through all of it.

It took me awhile because I kept taking breaks from it, but I finally finished Golden Time. I enjoyed it quite a bit at first but it just got worse and worse the longer it went on. I'll spoiler tag my thoughts and will warn in advance that this has more than a little bit of whining.

I have a soft spot for crazy girls so early Koko was the best. The idea of a dude falling in love with a yandere stalker lady is great, I would've loved it if the whole anime was about that. Instead that was only the first arc and everything after that consisted into terrible melodrama. It was the worst kind of drama too, where things only happened to facilitate more drama. There was a random car crash just to make everyone miserable, Banri's memories came and went by the whims of the plot fairy rather than anything concrete, and Koko, Oka, and Yana all acted wildly out of character at one point or another, all to create more drama. Like Koko's defining character trait is that she falls in love hard and doesn't know how to let go but nope she's breaking up with him now. And then in the finale, even though nothing about his condition really changed, I guess they're back together again? This would have meant more before they made me hate Koko. In fact, the only character I didn't hate by the end was 2D-kun because he was always the one pointing out the bad writing.

I also want to say something about the amnesia. I'm actually a huge fan of amnesia as a plot device because it offers an excellent way to explore who a character really is. For example, a character might be strong at their core but have been broken down by their experiences into someone who is weak. Amnesia would erase those experiences and revert the character to being strong again, and if the writing is good enough the audience could examine aspects between pre- and post-amnesia and come to a deeper understanding of the character. I love that, but that... isn't how Golden Time handled it at all. Banri was literally a different person after losing his memories, going from a weak crybaby to a far more charismatic person. They even underscored how much he changed by having his emo ghost self somehow sabotaging weather and shit just to try and make him miserable. There were no similarities between them to highlight anything meaningful about his character. It was just bad drama.

Yep pretty much how this show goes. There's just so much dumb shit. Pretty much agree with everything you said, though I did like the final episode at least.

Also I wish Linda-senpai had won.
Probably would have been worse from a story standpoint but I like her too much and am tired of childhood friends getting the short end of the stick.

Okay, so I finally finished S2 of March Comes in Like a Lion. Wow, this was way better than S1! The bullying storyline for Hina was easily the best story in the whole show. Everything in it was presented amazingly well, Rei was awesome there, the villains were great, Chiho's episodes were tremendously good, the direction and animation were tops, etc. For whatever reason, the series skipped out on Gatou and Rei's sister, which was probably the dumbest storyline in S1, so it was nice having them gone, too. If Hina's arc had been the whole season, it would've been a 10/10. Unfortunately it wasn't. The show did have its first good shogi arc - the one between Souya and Rei. It was actually presented half-decently well, had a cool twist with Souya being deaf, and the two of them interacting afterwards was actually well done. The shogi in the show is just astoundingly bad in general. I don't understand how they fucked it up so hard, since shogi is great fun in Shion no Ou, and there's plenty of similar board game series that make the game way more interesting (Akagi, Hikaru no Go, etc.). Souya was also the only shogi player who wasn't terrible. I hated almost all of them for the way they interacted with Rei, especially his so-called 'friends' so it was nice to have a good one for once. The game between the old guys at the end was dumb, but at least it was only a couple episodes and the jokes they made leading up to it were good.

In short, the best parts of S2 were way better than the best parts of S1, and while the worst parts were just as bad, there weren't as many of them. Nice to finally get some payoff and understand why people actually like this show.

I've been slowly watching Is the Order a Rabbit? for the last week or so and I finally finished the second season. It was cute fun so I definitely enjoyed it, but I felt like something held it back from reaching the heights that similar cute girl gag anime like Kiniro Mosaic or Urara Meirocho reached for me. At times it seemed like Rabbit was prioritizing feel-good fluffiness over the actual humor, maybe that was it. Anyway, I don't want to make it seem like I didn't enjoy it since it was still good! Cocoa was my favorite with her big sister cheerfulness but all the characters played off of each other really well.

I mean, GOD STATUS is a ways away, the latter half of the series. Great status is probably after some boring training stuff in York New. Though Hunter Exam is pretty damn fantastic in it's latter half as well.

There's no consensus, but if you ask me HxH is mostly mediocre for quite a while (though I do quite like a few of the Hunter Exam episodes).

The arc that's probably most well-regarded overall (and is easily my personal favorite) doesn't start until more than halfway through the series.

I just finished Bodacious Space Pirates, which I simply had to watch because that is a great title for an anime. As for the show itself, though, I can only describe it as 'fine'. I dunno, maybe I went in with my expectations too high. The premise of a high school girl becoming a space pirate captain is something that really appeals to me so it only being 'fine' is actually kind of a disappointment. I don't have any major complaints so it's not like it did anything wrong, it just never seemed to do anything special either. I guess if I had to pick one thing, the fact that their piracy had to stay within the bounds of the law was a weird choice. It really confined the potential of the series and made truly interesting plots almost impossible. Ah well.

Hinamatsuri is airing now (it's almost done) and it's easily my favorite comedy of the last few years, from what I've seen. Gabriel Dropout was also really good. Both of those have twelve episodes though, hopefully that doesn't matter.

If you have a preferred style of comedy I could probably offer a few more suggestions
