I really don't get the hate for the lightsaber battles in the OT, or simple lightsaber battles in general. A real sword battle isn't jumping and spinning around.

Real talk: this ain't the 70s, every movie has a high visual standard, so that's not a compliment, that's the status quo

Nah CGI has been pretty shoddy recently. Black Panther and Ragnarok both had some really bad CGI in some very important scenes.

Too much forced humor, it ran too long and there were too many scenes that reeked of Disney's fuck-you money. I don't think Canto Bight was totally useless, but that extended chase scene with the alien horses was unnecessary and serves to further pad out a padded out movie. Cut out a couple of big CGI scenes, even cut the whole last battle short - just have the movie be about the ship, and then open the next movie with the red salt battle. The length is atrocious.

I do love how Luke Skywalker was handled, though - people lose their shit because "THAT'S NOT WHAT LUKE SKYWALKER WOULD DO!!", but his motivation makes sense considering his beliefs about the Jedi. The movie makes a compelling case for the Jedi, with how haughty and pompous they could be and how their hubris led to the rise of darkness, and how Luke bought into the Jedi thing and fell from grace in a moment of darkness. You have to acknowledge and keep track of your darkness instead of denying it exists, or it can sneak up on you and express itself when least needed - in Luke's case, it manifested out of fear of the Dark Side, and it destroyed his life and his legacy despite only lasting a brief moment. Luke's path embodies his beliefs about the Jedi, and I thought that given the movie's thesis, it made sense for Luke to be where he's at in this movie. He was my favorite part of this movie.

And fuck, the humor wasn't always good, but Luke's zinger about Jakku got a belly laugh out of me and I really liked the "reach out" scene.

I didn't want them to kill him off, but I think the way they did it was fantastic. Very beautiful and poignant, and the two suns setting was great. I would have preferred to see it in the last film, but I liked it a lot.

But yeah, every other frame is magnificent.

It's nowhere near as bad as the prequels, but it has had more of a vitriolic response than those movies ever did.

I blame social media. I love the format, but it brings out the worst in people.

Someone did a pretty comprehensive breakdown of all the nitpicks you could make of the OT. I still think TLJ is a clusterfuck, but you can rip into the OT if you try hard enough. They aren't perfect movies by any means.

But you don't have to try with TLJ, the issues are so bad they are just sitting out there on the surface. Like 2/3rds of the movie is based on the idea that A commanding officer would just think people would sit by and watch their armada be blown up ship after ship. Without even telling them that there was something planned to save people. Remember she didn't say we have plan we just can not tell anyone. People assumed that there was no plan at all. If it was not for that , the issues on the ship would not have happen, Rose would not have had to lead a mission to try to find a code breaker, they would not have had the fight on the salt world. Hell it is more like 4/5s of the movie would not have happen without that.

I heard a pretty good fan correction that would really shut most haters up.

Just establish early on that the reason Holdo doesn't reveal her plan isn't just because Poe needs an ego check, but also there is a spy aboard the ship, she can't be sure who she can trust. The plot still advances as it does and the reveal is still the same.

.I don't know why people want to dismantle the plot of the movie so there is no movie. It's like saying "If the crew aboard the ship in Alien didn't investigate the distress signal, everyone would have survived and made it home safe and sound. Yeah...and there would be no fucking movie, sounds super exciting
