I guess I'm glad this flashback isn't all about reveling in how horrible Ange's life has been. I got my fill of that from Fata Morgana, and I doubt Umineko could do it better.

the thing about Rosa, and I don't know if you've grown to appreciate this or if you will at all, is that she's at least terrible in an interesting way. like, in the sense that a character doesn't have to be charming and likable in order to be good. or a character can be 'a terrible person' without being 'a terrible character.'

as you've correctly identified already... someone like Ange is less terrible as a person, but also much less interesting and much worse as a character.

I actually find Rosa's story to be a pretty well-done and realistic look at abuse, and how abuse can create a cycle of trauma.

That doesn't mean I like her though.

Ange as a character is merely ok imo

However, her stuff here is fantastic and a large part of what makes 4 my favorite episode.

I hated the Ange flashback stuff in Ep 4 and it soured me on her forever. Arria told me that she liked Ange, and she's still only on Ep 5. To each their own, I guess.

Really the only thing I don't like about Ange is she didn't tell Battler her real name. I HATE shit like that in anime, where people keep secrets for no reason. Especially since Battler already guessed her identity and she said he was wrong, which means Battler learning who she really is will be even MORE drawn out. Maybe there's an actual reason, like Ange doesn't want Beatrice to know they are related but I kinda doubt it.

I thought occurred about that Nanjo death riddle.. is it possible for the servants to survive being declared dead by the red by taking their real names into account? Like let's say that metaphorically 'Shannon' died, but 'Sayo' is still alive. Probably too esoteric though. But Shannon and Kanon do appear again after their deaths in episode 3, and if we believe there isn't magic going on BUT believe those events still happened to some degree I wonder how that could be.

It does seem odd that for all the hype the police have been given as super crime solvers who will fix everything, they couldn't figure out anything that could tie Eva to the murders. Her going to the secret mansion as an alibi is pretty good thinking for her though. This ponytail guy brings up a good point that it would be very unlike Eva to kill Hideyoshi or George. Which makes me feel more confident in there being another murder, perhaps a servant under their real name.

Looks like Battler has a different theory for Nanjo's murder, that Kinzo has been dead for years at this discrepancy created wiggle room to hide the real culprit within all the red.

I like superhuman, but-probably-actually-dead-though Kinzo. I've wanted to see a real conversation between Kinzo and the family for a while now, so I will hold up hope this beast of a man is still alive.

Episode 4 Kinzo is amazing. He's definitely best adult overall, too.

I can't imagine the Kinzo Face is as good with the updated graphics though

This flashback segment is bad, and not just because it is really sad. It's like the writer is talking through Maria trying to convince the reader Rosa isn't that bad. I've heard things in Umineko were written and rewritten around audience reactions. It's pretty transparent, and it's not going to work on me.

It is the same principle, but it doesn't work for me. I love the straight man in comedy because he does a lot of the work to make the jokes work. Hideyoshi is just not evil and that's it.
