I have Madoka above average at a 6/10, so I definitely enjoyed it! What mostly held it back wasn't so much its tone but rather that it deconstructed a lot of magical girl tropes that I enjoy more when they're played straight (which is why I vastly prefer Yuki Yuna is a Hero). Stuff like when the losing main team cries in a sports series or one character is suffering because their hard work is no match for natural talent. Im fine with that sort of stuff and even like a lot of those types of scenes. When characters are just dying left and right like flies and it feels like the whole show just exists to make one or more main characters suffer nonstop or the series turns into something so dark you just want it all to end though....man I feel like you gotta be some kinda weird to really enjoy that stuff. There's something to be said for a series getting an extremely powerful emotional reaction from you sucking you in, even if it's negative. Bokurano is a great example. swordz9 07/23/18 9:53:46 PM #183:	See one of the bad things with super grimdark stuff for me is once a character or two dies I know basically everybody else is gonna die too. This usually means the series will be relatively short and thus probably wont develop the characters much either in my experience. Just knowing theyre all gonna die means I dont really have any reason to even try to get invested in them because why bother they will probably be dead after a few episodes anyways. I dont really get to care about what led them to it or what their backstory was or whatever else. Came to Japan to see idols, sees an idol group, says they arent idols and shows what she thinks idols are via her handmade monster plush....How does someone even think idols are monster plushes? Literally as weird as comparing grimdark anime to tentacle porn tbh. Main girl can perfectly copy a dance routine shes seen once and notice little details to make the group better, but the twist is she cant sing at all. Oh shes also apparently the daughter of a musical genius according to the producer guy. Anyways this actually wasnt bad.
