Today's games are several tiers below the quality of games 15-20 years ago. They are terribly overpriced. I wouldn't play 99.99% of them for free.

Would you look at that, those known for usually rejecting objective reality are rejecting objective reality again. What a shocker!

Meanwhile, disregarding rallies, games from that era dominate all the contests.

Literally no one called it a timeless classic. I'd argue that tastes in games are so diverse these days that there's no longer such a thing as a timeless classic. That's not due to a decrease in quality, it's due to *gasp* people liking different things!

If you want to ignore the impact that Fortnite has had - when it literally inspired the celebrations of players in the World Cup - then that's you putting horse blinders over your face.

I don't think there's any difference in quality between present games and games from decades ago. I do think they're too expensive though. There are a couple games released today that I'd be willing to spend 60 dollars on, but many more that I would not be willing to shell out that kind of money for. It would have been the same in the past too, the difference being of course that back then I wasn't the one paying for my games.

I mean I agree with Vlados premise, but there's always exceptions to the rule. Super Mario Odyssey for example. That game will live on like Galaxy, Mario 64, Sunshine (it's amazing fight me). Top tier quality game.

As for flavour of the month sure fortnite is no different than when the next his FPS or whatever arrives for the preeteen / teen crowd but at the same time that's what the vast majority of gamers want.

Everyone's version of quality is different anyways so this argument was silly from the beginning

How exactly

I think maybe he's talking about games that become best sellers and will be relative for years to come. Back in the glory days it was typically RPGs and action games.

Today it's mainly flavor of the month FPSs and whatever else the peach fuzz mashes swallow up.

That doesn't mean amazing games aren't still made Vlado they just might not be in the limelight all day

Unless we're talking about sonic games then yes they are trash now and have been for over a decade

Except I never argued that nobody heard of Fortnite, just that it's a flavour of the month game that nobody will care about after some time passes.

The main problem is most people can't make a distinction between well-known today and well-known 20 years from now. Alas, that's the material I argue with.

Nope, try again.

Since I'm in a generous mood, I'll spell it out for you. It's called "the test of time." If a game is super popular today, but nobody cares about it in 20 years, it's obviously not very good. If a game was super popular 20 years ago, and is beloved even today, it's obviously done something right.

Does anybody today care about whichever Call of Duty was all the rage 5 years ago? Nope. Do people care about Final Fantasy VII and Ocarina of Time? Yes.

Of course, that does not apply to games which were never popular. Achieving popularity is only partially related to quality.

A slightly longer and pseudo-intellectual ( foolmo) way to cry "nostalgia."

There was a lot of low-quality content already when I was a kid, but also a decent amount of high-quality content, much more than today. One clear example that it's not about nostalgia is that there are games from that era which I play for the first time today, and appreciate all the same. One of the simple explanations: creativity and risk - they were rewarded back then. Now, it's about whatever can be sold to the most suckers.

Another explanation is Japan's shift towards mobile gaming.

Another one is the fact that small teams create better products, you can't expect something amazing from the current AAA titles with 1000s of people involved.

Of course, the SJW infestation of North American game companies has also contributed to this collapse. But it's still secondary to the absolute rejection of creativity in the endless quest for money.
