It's so ridiculous to me that people can find comedy to be tasteless or offensive.

Comedy is laughter. That is all. You either laugh, which is a great experience. Or you don't, which is neutral. There is nothing negative about comedy at all.

When you research this show, that's all anybody says. "Considered offensive and tasteless". It's like...gee whiz, sorry for trying to get people to laugh. What a shitty thing I've done.

Should racial stereotypes be considered offensive if the goal is laughter?

If the goal is laughter, then the laughter is rooted in irony or some sort of "laugh at the dumb character" type of humor, which if one understand these concepts should realize that nobody is laughing because racism in and of itself is funny.

Complete bullshit

Sometimes being offensive and tasteless is where a joke derives its comedy. And sometimes it's the reason a joke isn't funny too. The idea that something can't be tasteless just because it's a joke makes no sense

It's a shame nobody was watching it. It's a great example of a mature adult animated series that didn't need to resort to edgy, shock humor to be good.

If by "tasteless" you mean unfunny, sure. But if tasteless to you implies being mean or rude or offensive, then I disagree. A joke is designed to get people to laugh. In order to argue that a joke attempt can be offensive, you must first argue why it's offensive to try and get people to laugh. And since you can't do that, you lose.

Dead baby jokes were pretty popular for awhile, with the whole point being that they are only funny because of how unapologetically tasteless they are. The jokes themselves were not funny.

Okay. But that really doesn't go against anything I'm saying.

You're saying jokes can't be offensive or tasteless and I don't believe that's true. Aside from jokes that are specifically designed to be both offensive and tasteless, there are also jokes that derive their humor from being racist and aren't just trying to be wacky or whatever. I'd rather not try to skirt the rules by trying to post examples.

I have never seen an example of a joke being derived from actual racism. I have seen plenty of jokes that are related to the concept of racism, but never actual outright racism as an attempt at humor.

If you are trying to make people laugh, then you aren't being racist.

"I've never seen it therefore it doesn't exist" is a poor argument

And news flash, racist people laugh at racist jokes

^ The problem, I think, is that you don't know what actual racism is. Racism is something mean and nasty. You can't be attempting to make a joke while also being mean and nasty at the exact same time. It's like trying to be in both Miami and New York at the same time. It's impossible.

So you literally can not wrap your head around the concept of racist jokes

And it taught Christian values. The show actually was in the Christian spirit but Christians didn't pay attention to the plot so they didn't see it. They just saw Satan being friends with God and freaked out

Years later they played the entire season adult swim and every episode has some kind of moral lesson that Jesus would be proud of

Not all racism is mean and nasty. Anecdotal example, my grandmother had some racist beliefs, like that asians were all really good at math. But she also literally marched for civil rights when she was a younger woman and we got in an argument at some point because she thought deliberately offensive remarks, like racial slurs, should be illegal to say and I thought language, even offensive language, should not be punished by the law.

Also, you absolutely can tell mean-spirited jokes.
