You should've nominated Psycho Mantis!

97. Hadley Just Wants to See a Merman (Cabin in the Woods) (12 points)
Nominated by: scarletspeed7 (3/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8aRoLQpBjo" data-time="

Importance: 2
Fear: 3
Snake: 7

Poor Hadley. As one of the most relatable plights in the entire movie, the story of Hadley and his Merman dreams and desires is just as compelling as the main arc in Cabin. The Merman is one of the only monsters Hadley has never seen; is it too much to ask for a little variety in our horror monster summoning job? It raises a lot of larger questions, like why don't they ever make more Merman horror movies, or why don't those damn kids ever blow into the conch?! Imagine being Hadley, and seeing Curt pick up the conch, pucker up to blow, and then put it back down for yet another item. You can practically feel the anguish roll off the screen.

To make matters even worse, Hadley's death at the hands of irony makes this one of the most tragic stories of our time, not felt since the likes of Shakespeare. Only on the cusp of death do Hadley's dreams finally come to pass, as his most wished-for creature, the Merman, appears before him like some twisted angel of the afterlife. As Hadley lays helpless, his last words are spoken, "Oh, come on", as he laments his bittersweet fate.

It's a true dramatic tale of horror & woe that will absolutely stand the test of time.

Oh look, it's my favorite topic, me. I'm just the best and there's no real disputing that. Especially when it comes to horror rankings: I am unrivaled.

Alright, alright, I'm kidding. I hope I never get an ego actually that big.

On the board, I am most definitely known as a horror lover, especially in the realm of video games, as evidenced by the fact that I never shut up about Resident Evil and Silent Hill and endlessly torment the VGM crowd with my atmospheric survival horror tracks.

Despite my love of fearsome things, I am anything but. I am a complete pacifist and extremely reserved, and it takes quite a lot to get me truly angry. I prefer to let problems and conflicts sort of roll-off my back and I stay positive and optimistic in even the most stressful of circumstances. I consider myself brave and I always stay strong in my beliefs and opinions.

I hope one day I can increase that importance score just a little bit; I'd love to publish a book or even write for a horror game or movie. That would definitely be a dream come true for me. Until then, I'm quite happy at least writing these horror rankings for you all to enjoy!

95. The Snatcher (A Hat in Time) (12.5 points)
Nominated by: Shonen_Bat (4/5 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78AQPMP6q9I" data-time="

Importance: 2.5
Fear: 3
Snake: 7

The Snatcher is another adorable addition to the kid horror canon. From his hammy introduction of "FOOOOOOL" to his standard devil practices of making people sign contracts. I think he looks a lot more cute than he does scary, but it's also a very mischievous and trickster type of face too. It's interesting to note though how scary he starts to sound too when you don't sign his contract.

The Snatcher strikes a nice delicate balance between charming and sinister, letting off snarky one-liners at one moment and talking about murder in the next. His demeanor is very business and lawyer like, which you can realistically think a lot of unsuspecting foooools can get suckered in to. Even during his boss fight, the Snatcher stops midfight to banter about attacks you do to him. It's all very hilarious if you ask me.

There's still some fear to be had in his character; after all, he's basically the devil. I guess A Hat in Time is a good lesson towards kids to not sign fishy-looking contracts from tall shadow men.

94. The Thing (The Thing 2011) (13 points)
Nominated by: Pirate_Harris (2/5 remaining)

Importance: 4

Now, here's the "thing" (I'm sorry): I don't think the 2011 Thing movie is actually that bad. It just has one glaring problem: The Thing itself. I don't think it really looks that great here. A bad CGI abomination compared to the awesome practical effects of the original movie. It absolutely does not carry the same weight to it. It's presence just doesn't as real. With the use of CGI, also comes the irresistible urge to reveal the monster more and more, which is completely antithetical to the concept of the Thing, built on paranoia and distrust as literally anyone or anything could be this alien creature.

I'm not saying it's all bad though, as I actually like that scene I showed up above, especially when the two faces combine into each other. I'm just saying The Thing as portrayed in the 2011 film is a different, less scarier beast than in the original Carpenter classic. It's a more typical violent alien that places body count over psychological assimilation. If you prefer that style, more power to you, but Carpenter's Thing will also reign supreme in my eyes.

93. This China Mieville talk about marxism and halloween (13.5 points)
Nominated by: Pumpkin Coach (2/3 remaining)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paCqiY1jwqc" data-time="

Importance: 4.5
Fear: 1
Snake: 7

China Mievelle is a very smart and well-read author of fantasy/horror books, and one of his general favorite topics is that of Marxism and how it relates to Hallowene, horror, monsters, and all related parties. Now, I don't claim to be particularly versed in Marxist theory whatsoever, but this was still a very interesting talk to me. China himself is very witty and funny, and there are several points where I laughed out loud (especially the story about the news reporter and the trick r treat candy). As a lover of Halloween and horror myself, I was very interested to learn of the Marxist perspective, and how dressing up as the macabre and grotesque is looked down upon by the rural elite of Marxist areas. The working class uses traditionally capitalist traditions of Halloween to fight back against their rural oppressors, at least for one day out of the year. China also touches upon Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's call to ban Halloween, which leads into the fact that Halloween just isn't about witches or ghouls, but rather terror in general, and how political leaders can use that to manipulate or control the holiday to their wishes.

I really enjoyed the tangent about the octopus and coconut too (and the subsequent diss on HP Lovecraft) which was extremely interesting to me. It's really interesting to hear about how dread and future planning transcends species like that. China uses this point to illustrate that this dread allows to imagine alternative possibilities essential to things like ghost stories.

Now, I won't say I agree with everything China says; I think Halloween can be celebrated in anyway you personally want to, and not just necessarily as a holiday specifically for horror. It's still an interesting watch however, and well worth it for anyone interested in the Halloween. And by all means, if I maybe misinterpreted something here, please call me out on it and correct me, because I'd love to really get a good grasp on this myself.

gothic marxism best marxism. he runs through a lot of arguments in that talk, but the most key for me is the bits about solidarity with monsters or those made monstrous by capitalist society. also yeah, the octopus thing is great, and i've referenced it multiple times through the years.

in retrospect, i could've combined two of my noms and also nominated this essay:

Yeah that's a fair assessment. I wish they'll make another The Thing film with more practical effects. I'm glad that seemingly people are clamoring for less bad CGI and more combination of practical effects + CGI and more film makers are listening to us.

92. Snake Ranks Anything Horror Related Vol. 2 (13.5 points)
Nominated by: Great_Paul (3/4 remaining)
https://pastebin.com/cVSSV62f

Importance: 1.5
Fear: 2.5
Snake: 9.5

It's always good to look back on your previous work and reflect a little. With a whopping 119 nominations last year, it was a bit overwhelming which is why I cut back for this installment. Last years list of nominations was filled with lots of quality stuff, and I was introduced to some new favorites in the realm of horror, like Paranoia Agent, the manga I Am a Hero, and Nana's house walk-through (which I have watched several times now up to this point). Anytime I can gush about Silent Hill 3, Resident Evil 4, or Spec Ops: The Line is always awesome too. I really worked a lot harder last year to research even further then I did in the first volume, as I didn't want another Over the Garden Wall situation to happen where I didn't really give something the fair shot it maybe deserved. I hope and think my write-ups reflected that too.

Of course, there's always room for improvement. I received one or two complaints last year about my scoring system and yeah looking back I maybe ranked things a little too high in places, and I'm trying to be much more honest this year. Also, finishing in October for once would be cool!

Anyway, I don't have too much more to say; it was still one of my favorite projects ever and I'm glad it's now something I could look forward to every year to make my favorite month that much better.

Oh, and we STILL all know I copied this idea from Johnbobb.

Importance: 2

As far as horror video games go, Manhunt is one of a kind. Forcing you to murder your way through an abandoned city sector as you please a sicko's snuff film desires, it places the player as both slasher and survivor against insurmountable odds. This concept comes to a head in the boss fight with Piggsy, coming straight-out of Motel Hell, as you play cat-and-mouse with each other. As Piggsy stalks the hallways, the player hides from his deadly chainsaw, turning the tables on Piggsy with any opportunity to stab him in the back. Piggsy's disturbing appearance and realistic squealing creates quite the horror match for the player to persevere through, but with enough smart thinking you can turn the tables on the chainsaw wielding pig-man. I think one of the scarier aspects is Piggsy's childlike mannerisms because it clashes with Piggsy's otherwise violent demeanor, much like Texas Chain Saw Massacre did with Leatherface. With a scary antagonist and tense gameplay, Piggsy is a boss fight many Manhunt players won't ever forget.

Nocturne sounds like a pretty scary dude to me. His lore as an amalgamation of humanity's nightmares reminds me greatly of Warhammer canon and of course naturally invokes the work of Lovecraft. He was birthed into the world in a state of violence and chaos, slaughtering anyone he came into contact with before being imprisoned in the world of dreams once again. Like Freddy Krueger, Nocturne attacks people in their nightmares when they are their most vulnerable. This has also been one of the scariest concepts to me, because there really isn't we can do about it. Nocturne can transcend reality's boundaries and strike anyone and anywhere. I really like Nocturne's look and blades too, and I love his ghost skin. Unfortunately, he's not really very scary in gameplay form from what I saw, despite his attack names and abilities in theory tying well into his persona. His attacks are just kind of lame animation wise, but I can't fault it too much because LoL isn't really meant to be a horror game or anything.

He's probably one of the scariest champs to face in LoL for only one major reason. If you're extended, there's no clue how many people can be straight in your face after he pops his ultimate. His ult limits vision upon activation, you basically get a small flashlight on your person, which means the enemy team can start moving in on you and there's nothing your team can do about it on Summoner's Rift. He completely blanks out global skills for the opponent's team, while lets his own team storm in.

Literally the only champion in the game who effectively counters global abilities.

89. The Gregory Horror Show (Animated Shorts Series [particularly Season 1-Season 3]) (14 points)

As I stated last year, I was first introduced to the Gregory Horror Show through the PS2 horror game before discovering it was based on an animated series the whole time. I have since watched all seasons, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's one of the strangest shows you'll ever watch in terms of presentation and style. I quite like the paper mache characters and it's really interesting to see a series presented entirely from the first-person. It's immersive for the viewer much like a first-person horror game is. It allows for Gregory, the mysterious and creepy hotel manager, to really get the drop on both the main character and viewer many times.

The show is primarily horror-focused but there are definitely elements of comedy and cute charm to it too. Gregory can be both creepy and goofy between appearances in a seamless manner, and you'll always be eager to see what he says and does next. Yet, there's no mistaking that Gregory is a villainous character, exploiting the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of many characters as his hotel serves as a purgatorial prison for wayward patrons. The animation style can definitely soften the blow of the scares and psychological tauntings of Gregory, but I think that's definitely intentional and can even make the horror more affecting in a roundabout way when you really think about it.

One of my other favorite characters in the show is Catherine, a lizard nurse who enjoys drawing blood from the other guests. Her comically large needle contrasts with her psychopathic intentions in a very funny and very scary way.

I think season 1 has the most interesting situations and it's strong just based on being thrown into this new and surreal world, whilst season 2 kind of just felt like more of the same. The story arc just isn't really as satisfying in season 2 and overall it veers too far into the more comedic side of the show. It's still worth a watch, but I think season 3 is where it's really at. It makes Gregory the true central character this time, positioning him as a lost guest like the previous two protagonists and exploring his psyche a lot more here, making him a vulnerable character as the series examines where Gregory really belongs, both in the literal sense and the sense of reality. Is Gregory destined to repeat history over and over again or can he actually choose his own path? It's actually some surprising hard-hitting stuff when it wants to be, but still has plenty of that Gregory Horror Show comedy you will come to expect by this point.

I recommend the series greatly to all horror and animation fans, and with only three hours to watch-through, you'll be in and out of its strange, magical world before you even realize it.

So, why don't you just rent out a room already?

I still remember first watching The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy episode Little Rock of Horrors and being mesmerized by this song. It's honestly the only episode I ever really remember just because of this song. It made quite the impact on me for sure. It's a very catchy song with a prominent swing beat that succeeds greatly in making you get up and dance. It sounds like a song you would hear in a zombified version of a secret night club. The lyrics are comedic and satirical, as the average evil meteor from outta the sky tries to reason with the boy he came into contact with, claiming that people who watch TV or even the older folk don't ever really use their brains anyway. The rhyming structure and words used are very original and flows easily, making every comedic punchline land hard and hilarious. Backed by an absolutely sinister violin and Voltaire's dark, devilish delivery, Brains! is a song that will struggle to leave, well... your brain!

This is an incredible piece, the kind you don't just watch, but take in with every utter aspect of your being. From its onset it's a non-stop screaming roller coaster ride, a menage of varying animation styles ranging from cheap MS paint drawings to 3D animation to cardboard stop-motion to live-action to any other fucking thing you can think of! It doesn't really make any lick of sense but that's the absolute joy of it all; you'll be glued to your seat to see just what the hell they do next. It's absolutely mesmerizing and a joyful treat that everyone needs to see.

86. That Six Flags coffin challenge (14.5 points)

Delivered courtesy of our resident "news" analyst FullThrottle is where I first heard of this crazy challenge hosted by the amusement park, Six Flags. It honestly sounds like a pretty fun challenge to me, with scary ghouls coming a-knockin' on your little bed six feet under and having a kind of cozy if a little tight atmosphere. I understand though many people hate tight spaces and suffer from claustrophobia which would understandably make this challenge a lot tougher for them. The obvious associations of death with coffins and horror stories of being buried alive would also make a lot people tap out of the challenge pretty early. Still, for those brave enough, the rewards are pretty handsome, especially for aspiring vampires as you can even take the coffin home! Not too shabby.

Same. It would be nice to get the rewards, but nighttime would be awkward as I'm not good with that sort of thing. Dunno how claustrophobic I am, I don't think I am.

85. Panic! At the Disco Dont Threaten Me With a Good Time (14.5 points)

I really like this song a lot and so I was really glad when it got the music video treatment, because P!ATD always knocks out of the park video wise. Any other band or artist would've been content to make this video strictly about its subject matter with heavy, hard partying scenes and maybe a simple comedic plotline about a chiffon skirt, but Panic! takes it a step further turning it into a light-hearted sci-fi/horror romp instead, taking some lines such as "What are these footprints? / They don't look very human like" and some translating them into the video with an image of tentacles.

The choice to shoot the video from a first-person perspective was very clever, and it incorporates a lot of neat scenes into the mix. I love when the action ramps up and the tentacle woman is chasing Brendon around the house; it's always great in horror when your imagination takes over and you can't really see what a monster looks like beyond brief glimpses. I also love the body snatcher aspect, as the tentacle woman takes over Brendon's appearance to continue its feeding the next day. It throwing up with the skull coming out is an hilarious image and a fun twist on the morning hangover.

I always love it when music videos go that extra mile to provide entertainment through limited, clever storytelling, and to me Don't Threaten absolutely fulfills a great concept backed by a great, fun song.
