Do they use an injector or a needle? If it's an injector, that's what's making your arm hurt, not the vaccine itself.

I don't know. When I got it earlier today, I sat down, and didn't look. I get squeamish at the sight of needles and blood.

I did get someone who put a needle against a nerve when I was trying to donate blood one time. That was incredibly unpleasant.

Depends a lot on the person giving the shot. Some people are so smooth I don't feel a thing. Some do indeed feel like being punched.

Taking blood samples is always worse. They always have trouble locating a vein in my arm, and the really incompetent phlebotomists will miss the vein then start digging around.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

Sales of flu vaccines make up less than 0.3% of worldwide pharmaceutical sales. And that's gross sales, that's not counting the huge amount they have to spend on R&D and manufacturing. Unlike most drugs, vaccines require constant research and testing to stay effective each year.

Studies show that flu vaccines reduce the risk of getting the flu by about 60%. In the 2016-17 flu season, the CDC estimates vaccines prevented 5.3 million cases of influenza, 2.6 million flu-related doctor visits, and 85,000 hospitalizations in the United States alone.

The flu can kill. Between 250,000 and 500,000 people will die this year from the flu. The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 killed 50 to 100 million people, or 3 to 5% of the world's population at the time! Most of the victims were otherwise perfectly healthy adults.

A flu vaccine costs about $20 at Costco (no membership required), or free almost anywhere with virtually all health insurance plans. And many employers and county health departments offer free flu shots as well. Even if you have to pay for it, it's cheap insurance against ending up in the hospital. Or dead.

To be fair, that particular strain of flu was an anomaly in that it most strongly affected healthy people due to prompting a particularly aggressive immune response. H1N1 was the same way, which is why it was considered to be such a big deal. In most cases, it's not healthy adults that are in serious danger from the flu, it's children, the elderly, or anyone else that's particularly vulnerable (immunocompromised people, people with respiratory problems, etc.).

Don't stop with just a flu shot.

Most adults will have been vaccinated as children against Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Whooping Cough), but you need at least one Tdap shot as an adult, and a Td booster at least every 10 years. If you don't know if you have had the Tdap shot yet, it won't hurt to get it again.

There are vaccines for Hepatitis A and B. Hep A is most commonly spread from contaminated food or drink. Hep B is spread by contact with body fluids. Both can cause serious liver problems.

If you are under age 46, you should get the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine. This will protect against various kinds of cancer. HPV is spread by skin-to-skin contact.

If you are over 65, have a weakened immune system, or have heart, lung, liver, kidney or spleen disease, diabetes, or you smoke, you should get the PPSV23 Pneumococcal vaccine. If you are over age 65, or you have a weakened immune system, or kidney or spleen disease, you should get the PCV13 Pneumococcal vaccine as well. Pneumococcal disease is a bacterial infection that can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, and septicemia (blood poisoning).

If you are going to be living in a group housing situation (military barracks, college dorm, etc), you should get the Meningococcal vaccine. This vaccine is also recommended for persons who have had their spleen removed. Meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and septicemia.

If you did not get the MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) as a child, or if you were born in 1957 or earlier, then you should get the MMR vaccine as an adult.

If you did not get the Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccine, and you did not contract chickenpox as a kid, then you need the Varicella vaccine.

If you are over age 50 and previously had chickenpox, you need 2 doses of the Shingles vaccine. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus which can remain dormant inside your body and reawaken decades later, causing a painful rash or blisters.

If your spleen has been removed, you have sickle cell disease, or received a bone marrow transplant, you should also get the Hib vaccine. Haemophilus influenzae type B can cause brain damage or hearing loss. It's uncommon in healthy adults.

This. Some people aren't aware that there is a difference between the flu and the common cold. A lot of people use the terms interchangeably, but they're not the same disease. I hear some people say they got a flu shot and still got the flu. No, what you probably got was the cold, not the flu. The flu shot only protects against the flu. It does not protect against the common cold, so you can still get a cold.

The flu and common cold are similar and share similar symptoms, so it is easy to understand why some people don't realize that they are different diseases. The flu is far worse than the cold though. The flu can in fact kill you, and it does kill thousands of people every year.

Another thing is that the flu can also turn into pneumonia, which is even worse. Pneumonia is very serious, and it kills even more people than the flu. I personally did have pneumonia once that started as the flu. I almost died from it. I was hospitalized for 10 days, 3 of those days in intensive care. After I left the hospital I had to use a portable oxygen tank for 3 months.

Ever since my near death experience with pneumonia, I definitely make sure I get the flu shot every year now. I never want to go through that again. It was the most horrible experience of my life.

I have felt great amounts of physical pain. After that, anything below it has become child's play. Though I guess I've always had a high-tolerance for it...
Seriously though, the length and width of a flu-shot needle is pathetic compared to other shots. The most discomfort you'll feel is from the substance being injected, not the needle itself. The only time I was ever sore after a flu shot was when I was a little girl.
