I didn't really have any interest in the designs of either prerelease, but actually watching the show I think they're bother really solid. Didn't think at the beginning of the year that another show might try to snag the best Trigger girls crown.

I had a crazy month and fell behind. I still haven't finished everything from last season, still haven't seen everything from this season, what I have seen I'm not totally caught up on, my regular anime backlog is still huge...

It's beyond me how Madhouse continues to treat that show like dirt yet it's the only show they continue to give multiple seasons too.

I guess maybe that's the actual reason? They want to make sure they can keep making seasons even if it doesn't justify the numbers, so they make it as cheaply as possible? I don't know how much bank Overlord brings in.

The only solace is maybe they're putting all their money into Boogiepop Phantom. PV makes that seem plausible.

S1 was a big hit, but S2 only sold half as well it looks like.

Overlord S3 was easily the worst season, I thought, which was odd because it finally started doing things I'd wanted it to do. It wasn't just the CGI, everything from the big picture to little details felt rushed.

When Overlord S2 was airing I was seeing people talking it up all the way up to the end even before I watched it. S3 talk seemed to die off, though admit I still have the last third or so to watch.

Plenty of CG looks fine. Land of the Lustrous is one of the most gorgeous anime I've ever seen, easily the best looking last year. I've already got the steel book preordered.

But a lot of CG looks like garbage. Goblin Slayer looks terrible in tons of shots. The goblin army in Overlord S3 (....coincidence) is a joke.

I mean....what's to get? Did you not see Berserk?? That's what people are fighting against. Bad CG can be ruinous to the experience. The preview for ZLS episode 3 has a second of CG dancing that, unless it's a parody of Love Live's lame CG like I'm hoping it is, I'm just absolutely dreading.

I generally don't mind CGI, especially in something like a fight scene or a dance scene. Budgets exist, after all, and I'd rather a fun CGI dance like in Love Live than a few still images like Music Girls degenerated into.

Overlord S3 had hilariously terrible CGI though. At one point a few archers had noodle arms and no one had eyes.

A lot of CGI in anime is just bad. The thing is though that I a lot of people don't actually argue against it because it's bad, but because they just don't like it in anime. There is just an irrational stigma against CGI in anime in terms of the aesthetics. Like, no one really argues that the use of CGI for enhancement effects is a bad thing. But people are upset when their robot or whatever looks fully rendered.

This is not to say that there are not CGI anime that people don't enjoy. But I also think a big factor is that the expectations on how good it should be are set too high. Like, yeah a lot of CGI in anime is just flat out bad, but some of it is acceptable given the medium. Like in the currently airing Girl in Twilight, people complained about the CGI... but I'd say if you complain about it there your bar is set too high.

Like people originally complained about High Score Girls CGI too, but that ended up being a really good show and people kind of forgot it was CGI in the first place. HSG is a show that I think would not have been nearly as good if it was made in a more traditional format.

As I said before, I had no issues with Girl in Twilight's CGI. If that level is getting complaints then yeah, it's a bias.

But that doesn't excuse when it DOES look bad, which is most of the time.

As fo HSG, I can't say because it's not out yet.

Well, tonight I actually tried to watch anime but after two episodes my internet went down for hours, so that was fun. It's never done that before, and I hope it doesn't keep happen again. Still, I watched the first episodes of two more anime!

SSSS Gridman was... weird? I'm sad I couldn't watch a second episode because I want to know what the hell is going on. There were a few points where the animation/direction/whatever was off-putting, but I don't know if it was bad or just a style they were going for. If that is the case, though, I don't know the purpose of the style. Like, one conversation cut any character movement and just had them jump around... because? Despite all that, it was still intriguing and there were certain things I liked about it (amnesia plotlines have huge potential for me, I hope it delivers), so at worst this is going to be a million times better than FranXX. It doesn't look like it'll surpass LWA though.

I also checked out Merc Storia. For a cute little fantasy world where a kid who is terrified of monsters has a mystical ability that forces him to interact with monsters, it was fine. Not sure it'll ever rise above the level of being generic but I also don't think I'll regret sticking with it.
