https://abc7.com/society/cancer-survivor-told-to-cover-face-at-restaurant-/4487967/

A community has rallied behind a cancer survivor who said he was told to cover his face while at a restaurant in South Carolina.

Kirby Evans said he's a regular at Forks Pit stop in Walterboro, but when he went to eat there on Monday, he was caught off guard.

"I felt somebody reach up and grab me like this and jerk me in her office," Evans said.

Evans said the person who grabbed him worked at the restaurant. The employee told him if he wanted to eat at the restaurant, he'd have to cover his face.

Evans lost his nose and his eye during a battle with cancer, which he won. He said the employee's demands were downright hurtful.

"It hurt deep inside. I had never been treated like that. Never," he said.

Shortly after the incident occurred on Monday, Evans' daughter Brandy posted about it on Facebook, and it went viral.

"It's really made me proud to watch everybody rally around him and let him know that he doesn't have to hide his battle scars," Brandy said.

Brandy also said that the employee involved commented on the post, saying the following:

"I IN NO WAY TRIED TO HURT YOUR FATHER" and "I HAD NO CHOICE! IT WAS RUNNING MY CUSTOMERS OFF."

The incident even caused one of the employees at the restaurant to resign.

"This right here is my resignation. I'm fed up with this place," said Forks employee Brandy Harley.

Luckily, Kirby Evans isn't focused as much on the incident as he is on how supportive the rest of his community has been.

"I'm telling you what, I didn't know there were that many people that cared but there are. They're out there everywhere," he said.

The man's face.

Honestly it doesn't even look that bad. There's a woman here who is a cashier at the grocery store with some really bad burn scars all over her arms and forehead and that looks much worse and she's not being told to cover anything up.

Geez it might be an initial distraction but it's nothing to focus on for your whole meal.

I don't know how anyone can look at somebody with a noticeable disfigurement and decide that having to look at it makes you uncomfortable to the point where you want them to leave. They've gone through enough shit already god damn. A person who would do that completely lacks empathy.

I agree. Initiall distraction sure. But to focus on it throughout your meal is ridiculous. Mind your own business and focus on who you are with assuming you are with someone.

Unless he was eating an ortolon, there's no reason he needed to cover his face to eat somewhere.

He probably should cover his face for health reasons, but that's not the restaurant's job. If they're worried about his facial features, sit him in the back like they do with black people.

Not really though. Appease one to alienate thousands of others.

Especially in today's world you HAVE to know these things go viral. Had they gone off on the customers and stood up for the cancer survivor, they'd have really increased their customer base.

Basic business strategy is avoiding PR blunders. I feel like not picking on cancer survivors is one of the first ruled of business.

The hypocrisy is ridiculous, and slightly hilarious in a fucked up kinda way. You have people voting yes, who are also part of a minority group, which this poor guy is most definitely a minority, as you don't exactly see a lot of people missing half their face. People who have probably been bullied for the way they look or for any other aspect that they have no control over are voting yes... lol wtf at this world.

Anyway, he shouldn't have to cover his face, but I would if it were me. I'd either wear a phantom of the opera type mask, which would be cool as hell, or try to get a go fund me to help me with facial reconstruction. However, I don't think it should be manditory for him to cover his face.

I mean, if he was oozing shit out of the orifices, then I'd understand, as that would be a sanitation issue. But damn... Just avert your eyes. I mean, he's not naked, or anything.

It's not really any different than a lot of other visual displays. Like a gay couple holding hands or some shit. I mean, would you have them leave if customers had issue with it, or tell the offended customers to get the fuck over their insecurities, and just don't look if they don't like it?

The dude can't help that he's missing his face, and that's punishment enough. Does he really need to be punished further by society because of his appearance?

I see both points of view here as having some merit. The man is essentially just trying to live his life after going through something horrific. The restaurant has been serving him for a while, but it has other customerss to thinkk about. It is a business. The man should be more self aware, but the person who 'pulled him into their office' should've been more tactful.

I don't think there should be more made of this, but I'm betting a gofunme will be started for the man in response to this story.
