Because all-white juries are statistically more likely to make errors in the prosecution's favor and yield guilty verdicts on unrealistic charges. Inclusion of a single minority juror tends to produce a strong mitigating effect. I'll provide a bibliography in a moment.

Nobody in any of the 50 states should ever go to jail, or be put on probation, for having marijuana.

With that said, its common sense that you cant bring it to Mississippi. Those cops on the Bible Belt will never accept legal weed. If there is a federal ruling, they would still crush the bag or dump it out or something like that.

Do you guys have a concept of how much 3 pounds is? I have seen a quarter pound before and it filled an entire large quart freezer bag. It's probably the equivalent of two bed pillows stuffed with weed.

Here in Oregon we can only buy 1oz at a time. So it would take you 48 days to legally buy it, let alone having that much when it's against the law.

This. Sure 8 years is a bullshit charge and pretty heavy imo, but lets not act like he did nothing wrong. He had 48 fucking ounces on him... its not like he brought one for his week vacation and got caught with 14g after he smoked half of it.

Oregon and Colorado are pretty generous with how much weed you are legally allowed to possess. In Colorado youre allowed to have an entire ounce on you as a 21+ yr old and 2 ounces if youre a medical patient. Youre allowed to buy that much in a day as well. Pretty damn hard to smoke 28g in a day regardless of who you are.

Funbazooka posted...
Why are you assuming his race has anything to do with this?

Because in a place that leans heavily left, such as here, racism is the go to answer for everything. Was he charged for carrying 47 more ounces than he is legally allowed to (48 more ounces than legal in the state he was visiting..)? No, its definitely because hes black. This doesnt have anything to do with drug possession or a reasonable suspicion that hes trafficking drugs.

So the guy has 3 pounds from Oregon. Cool, legal, yeah. Except the limit for possession on private property is 8oz, 1/6th of that.

He then goes to a state with harsh weed laws with all of that weed. Really smart. Most states are felonies with possession of over an ounce or two...

That's like 1200+ grams of bud. Shit would probably go moldy before he smokes it all since it was for "personal use"

Shit sucks but it's like a perfect storm for fucking him over. 8 years is pretty light after a quick look at the weed laws in Mississippi

There's a difference between a stupid law and an unjust sentence. There are many horrible laws in the Middle East, but if someone from another country goes there and gets busted for it, it's still a proper application of the law. He moved felony amounts of a controlled substance across state lines. What he did is well within the legal definition. Hell, if he had 2.9999 pounds in one container and .0001 in a baggie they'd had intent to sell too.

It's a shit situation but still the law. Even in Oregon he'd get in a ton of legal trouble for that amount.
