You have arrived to my 2nd "Ranks 1,000+" project and this time around instead of B8 users we will be tackling 1,300 songs from the last 5 decades.
Just a couple of notes about the list: -This ranking is almost entirely subjective. Please do not engage in a debate with me about whether this list qualifies as a legit "Best of" list. This is Not a ranking to determine the "best" based on record numbers or sales statistics etc.
This is purely a collection of tunes that are most appealing to my personal interests in music found within the amount of time I spent on research (with 300 nominations included). When the ranking is over you are more than welcome to reference any tunes that I did not include. I'm always down for great music and who knows, it is entirely possible that I will have simply overlooked some stuff that should be here. I listened to more than 5,000+ songs over the course of about 13 months or so, so I hope that was enough ground covered to at least offer some satiability. I have personally enjoyed the research either way.
---There are 260 songs representing each of the chosen decades. (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's)
----Yes I know the current decade has not yet completed but we are doing this anyway. Tbh there was sooooooo much terrible music this decade that I doubt we'll get anything much better than what we got right here. If I'm wrong, it doesn't matter because I don't want to sift through any more of this "Just Dance" infested generation.lol
Why didn't I include the 60's? Simple, because I'm not confident I could have pulled 200 songs from that decade and also I would have known immediately what the #1 song would have been for this ranking.
So Instead... I present that song as this topic's Theme Song:
(...I really don't know why I favor this tune over everything else but every time I hear it I get a special kind of goosebumps.)
Paint It Black / The Rolling Stones / 1966 [10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3] = 72.1 = 10.3
The Rollout I will be dropping you tunes in a couple ways here. Each song will be ranked out of total 1,300 and top 260 from their decade. There will be several statistics included in an ongoing update. There will also be a special ongoing update displaying the Top ranked songs in every genre. *Genres were selected either by research or best fitting based on my experience.
The Nominator Challenge: Some of you have submitted Nominations. You will recieve an update in topic whenever one of a user's nominations gets ranked. You will collect a Sum of points equivalent to the Sum of every placement on your list of nominations. The Larger this number, the lower you will place in the finals. The user who has earned the smallest score in the finals will have made the best nominations and be called Winner of the Nominator Challenge. (This is a Bonus game I play in most of my rankings.) ***At the start of this there are 2 Unclaimed Bots (#1 and #3). Anyone who wishes to claim a bot may do so in topic. First come, first serve.***
The Topic Discussion rules Be Friendly, Be Respectful and Be Appropriate!
I'm always cool with off topic posting as long as it stays friendly. With my Bi-polar I am sometimes easily triggered by unfriendly disputes and would like this space to be as free from that kind of stress as possible. Thank You
So, enjoy and get settled in for the ride! There are sooo many great tunes heading your way. Thanks for stopping by and following the ranking. I hope that not only can users discover some new music here but maybe participate in some candid conversation about their favorite tunes as they pop up. Your Pal, Se7en. =P

Example [10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3] = 72.1 = 10.3
[The Beat] This will represent the overall rhythm and progression of the song imo. A slight evaluation of the instruments used in a song will also have weight on the final beat score.
[The Hook] This will represent how likely it is that I listen to the whole song if it popped up on the radio. It will also represent the interest that I have to even finish a song.
[The Lyrics] This will represent how well the verse and chorus are written imo. It will also represent my ability to memorize and sing along with the song if I have that interest. I also use this to measure how well the vocals mesh with the rest of the song imo.
[The Memories] This will represent how much the song invokes personal memories. In some cases a song may gain points based on it's use in other Pop Culture I am familiar with.
[The Message] This will represent the message of the song or the difficulty of understanding it's meaning imo. It also represents a degree of emotional response that I get from hearing the song. I also include points if a song comes with a decent backstory.
[The Stickiness] This will represent the likelyhood that the song will get stuck in my head when I hear it. Depending on whether it's a verse, chorus, beat, simple riff or the whole damn song can determine how many extra points I give.
[Top 100 Bonus] The ONLY piece of this scoring system that will be slightly Objective. I will score based on an average of the info I find. Top 100 lists, Best song lists, overall sales, awards won etc.
[The Leaning Points] Every Song ranked will receive a "leaning" score in all 7 categories. A [0.1], [0.2] or [0.3] will be added to help the further breakdown of a songs final score. It's simply as follows: [0.1] = I'm not 100% sure how I feel about a final score. [0.2] = The final score can go either way up or down. [0.3] = I am 100% confident in a final score.

Write-Up: What a weird song here am I rite? It has an incredibly catchy melody to it but if you really listen to the lyrics they can be very um... disturbing is a word lol. Is Barbie really having so much fun if you are undressing and touching her anywhere. The song sounds like it was written for and by a creep. I mean, I know at the basic level someone wanted to make a connection with the toys but the line in the song that tells me this is a creep's anthem is when Barbie says "I can act like a doll, I can beg on my knees" after we already established that she was a doll. Any way you interpret it I suppose is a far cry from empowering women nowadays that's for sure. I wonder what the #MeToo movement thinks of this song exactly. Maybe I've missed the point though. Perhaps the song was intended to be explicit and in your face and bring to light the Masculinist ways of the world that still existed heading towards the new millenium but I dunno... I kinda doubt that lol. ====================================

Write-Up: This is an interesting sort of fun song. The story is comical and the melody is catchy. I don't know much about the artist unfortunately as I've never actually heard any of his music before. I get the feeling that most of his work is less than serious. Not that there is really anything wrong with that but this sounds like something you might get from a dude traveling around to schools entertaining children for a living. I'm sort of impressed that it made it this high since when I started this I really didn't pay much attention to it. It has grown on me slightly since the ranking started but I can't justify bumping it any higher. I didn't find many people online that expressed interest in this tune and I'm not sure it even charted in many places at all. (I could dig deeper but if results don't show on the first couple of google pages I give up.) ====================================

Write-Up: Classic Aerosmith here but interestingly enough it wasn't all that popular until Eminem came along and sampled the song for his "Sing For The Moment" song in 2002. I don't really consider it a cover because he only uses the intro theme and chorus. Still, I actually do like Eminem's rebranding of the song much better honestly. I know typically Steven Tyler stresses his vocals to certain limits but this song sounds pretty harsh on his vocal cords and it almost sounds like he voice cracks a few times which is sort of sloppy I guess. I'm gonna post Eminem's version anyway since I think it's the best alternate to this one even though it's not technically a cover. (I didn't include it here in the ranking because it wasn't completely original but it is worth a listen.)
Write-Up: Uhhh... first of all I have no clue what the hell is happening here. This is a pretty big hiccup in my process as not only am I not sure how I put this song in the ranking but I've never even heard it before so I don't even understand why I gave it a 2.1 in familiarity??? Obviously it's too late to retcon the list so I'm still dropping it as a part of the ranking but now I'm curious if I accidentally forgot to label it as someone's nomination (which I can see by the nominator list that isn't the case) so I don't know what happened. I did the research on the song apparently as the Top 100 score is pretty close to accurate but perhaps I added it when I was super friggin tired and just needed another 2010's song. It was well over a year ago when I compiled most of the list though but this is weird for sure. The song isn't terrible but I'm not sure if it is noteworthy of any sort tbh. ====================================

Write-Up: Kinda surprised that I haven't heard this one before this ranking but I really like the beat. The song isn't too deep but it's arrangement is almost just the right amount of melody for a big hit. It does get a little catchy after enough listens too. Unfortunately for you Mega this is the end of your 10's nominations. You still got plenty of other nominations left though so you are kinda looking good for the nominator challenge atm. Even though this was released in 2015 it's got a pretty slick New Wave sound to it imo. I didn't find anything that classified it as such but I can definitely hear it. I'm curious though, was this written for the Teen Titans show? (Too lazy to look that up atm) ====================================

Write-Up: Hey look it's Bruno Mars in another song. Man that dude sure got around this decade. Speaking of that this is the 3rd song in a row to drop so it's sort of a mini-assault on the 10's atm. It's not a bad song honestly but I've heard this one so many times that it's lost it's charm on me. It made it big on the mainstream though taking charge on the radio for several weeks in 2010. I don't remember if it was a summer hit but it sounds it. That's the big problem I have with songs like this that are overplayed to death in a seasonal way though. You really lose appreciation for them because you wind up never wanting to listen to them completely as the message is quite cookie cutter tbh. Does that make sense? Probably not but it is after midnight as I'm typing this so maybe I just think I'm making sense lol. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: This song takes me immediately back to high school when Post Grunge was a big thing in my area. Almost everyone was listening to it and it seemed like you just weren't cool unless you were too (j/k) but I thought it was a funny line. Anyway, I never really got into the Foo Fighters as much as the mainstream listeners but I did appreciate Dave Grohl's time with Nirvana. It kinda is weird though, would he have ever started this band had it not been for Kurt Cobain's worldy exit? I wonder. The beat and main riff are notable but sort of stale to me in a way. It could perhaps be my declining interest in most 90's music. I've sort of lost a lot of interest in the last few years almost as if I'm trying to forget that time of my life. I didn't have any significant events in my life other than extreme boredom half the time so I'm not sure why the disinterest is setting in as I get older. Oh well. The video is entertaining at least. ====================================

Write-Up: S*** I must be getting old if I just went ahead and dropped a Country Rock song immediately above a Post Grunge song... yep I did and I guess I am. I am finding that I have a better appreciation for select classics from my childhood which brings me to a theory or a joke that I've heard before about the fact that we are all born into diapers and die in them if we get old enough lol. Anyway, this one has a simple but classic rhythm to it that just makes me start to bounce my knee a bit. I docked a few points for the raspiness of Bonnie Tyler's voice because that kind of annoys me but the lyrics are decent and quite true. I don't usually admit to liking very many Country songs but I don't know if I mentioned before that I get away with it by liking stuff from the sub-genre's lol. ====================================

==================================== { 918th Place } [70's][ 142nd Place] Song: "If You Leave Me Now" Band: Chicago Album: Chicago X ---{ 1976 }--- Genre: Soft Rock Score:[6.3][8.3][4.2][4.2][4.3][3.3][10.2] = [40.8] = [5.828] Video:
Write-Up: Interesting... I think this is the first time in this ranking so far where a band unseats itself from a genre on the top genre list.. oh wait nm, I totally forgot that 1,300 and 1,299 were both Neil Cicierga or whatever his name is. I can't un-hear Butters from South Park anytime I hear this song though after seeing that episode where Cartman convinces him that the world has ended and traps him in a bomb shelter. It's a very mediocre song imo but even after 20 albums remains one of the band's best for some reason. The video loses sound about half way through but that's ok because you hear the majority of the song at that point anyway. I'd get a different link but laziness and all that.
Write-Up: Meh... A really popular Soul hit from the 70's but I don't get it. It doesn't sound super fantastic and isn't even all that catchy imo but people love it. It ranks pretty high on a few different Love Song lists I looked at but I couldn't do 'ma thang' to this at all. That's probably why I wasn't born in the 70's I suppose lol. I am happy that it knocked that gdamn ABC song off the top genre list though as I've seen and heard enough of that crap. I've never owned an Al Green album and this is the only song off the top of my head that I think I've even heard of his. I do always confuse it for that "Let's get it on" song by Marvin Gaye though when I first hear it. ====================================

Write-Up: Let me be clear if I haven't already. I have a very strong aversion to Miley Cyrus. I don't know why exactly but I just have a disinterest in any of her work. I don't find her attractive and she looks like walking baggage. I mean, talk about going off the deep end am I rite? I dunno she was weird when she was a Disney tot too. Either way, no matter what she does I am always unable to perceive anything but a poser. She appears on this list a couple of times thanks to my wife and trust me I'm not happy about it lol. It was hard trying to give an honest score seeing this song rise into the low 900's but I made it through and am happy it's dropping finally. Can't wait till I get to the part of the list where every song is amazing unlike this one lol. ====================================

Write-Up: I honestly feel that I should like this song much more than I do. Perhaps if it wasn't so repetitive lyrically I wouldn't lose the interest in the beat but man... Try listening to this song even 10 times in a row and odds are you might not be so happy by the end. It did well on the charts all the same and faded into the archives of morning news/talk show tv. I say this because I swear it feels like Good Morning America has sampled this one a million times since it was released. Anyway, every once in awhile I might bounce a knee to this one. I think my biggest problem is I prefer my happy songs to be about something that makes one happy like a good love story or something. Stuff like this that is moreso gospel happy just makes my stomach turn after too much exposure. Does anyone else feel that way ever lol? ====================================

Write-Up: This song gets better after a couple of listens but I think the chorus sounds out of place. It's either the way the lead singer is singing or I might actually have lied to you and really don't like this song lol. Meh. It's really not significant for me. I think I went a lot easier on you NBI when scoring this originally or I was in a different mood or something. I don't feel like some of the numbers are accurate and feel like this should probably have been a bit lower in the ranking. Lucky for you I can't take it back now :P. (Smaller write-up than usual on this one.) ====================================

I guess this is a game, and I guess that I beat it. I don't feel like I accomplished anything. They were up front that this was going to be a short game. I wonder if this was the prelude to a full game that is was in development. ---
==================================== { 913th Place } [90's][ 203rd Place]@Phoenix-Smasher Song: "The Day I Tried To Live" Band: Soundgarden Album: Superunknown ---{ 1994 }--- Genre: Alternative Metal Score:[6.3][5.2][6.3][5.2][6.1][3.1][9.2] = [41.4] = [5.914] Video:
Write-Up: The 2nd song from Soundgarden to make an appearance and oddly enough one that I like less than the one I ranked 1st??? Yeah weird right. Obviously the scoring would suggest otherwise but I have a feeling that I thought this song was something else when laying down a score. (I have admittingly done this a couple times without the song playing in the background). I have listened to all the songs multiple times of course but the title of this one (I realize now) may have possibly caused me to think of the song by Audioslave titled "Show Me How To Live" when I took the time to finally score the song. Oops. Interestingly enough though the actual ranking for the Audioslave track (which is on the list coincidentally) will come much later. Now back to this song... meh. ====================================

==================================== { 912th Place } [80's][ 192nd Place] Song: "Don't You Forget About Me" Band: Simple Minds Album: The Breakfast Club ---{ 1985 }--- Genre: New Wave Score:[6.3][7.2][6.2][4.2][2.2][5.2][10.1] = [41.4] = [5.914] Video:
Write-Up: Another hit from 1985 and a pretty decent one at that. I don't have as much of a nostalgic affinity for this song as my wife does but hearing it always takes me back to my childhood. Of course if you hadn't recognized by now this was kind of a theme song for the movie The Breakfast Club which I think may be the real reason my wife likes it so much as she loves that movie. I've watched it a couple of times but it isn't as epic of a movie as I used to remember it imo. Billy Idol was once one of 3 people that Keith Forsey (The writer and composer) had asked to record the song but turned the offer down. I mention it because he later went on like 15 years later to record a cover of the song that was actually pretty decent too. Shoulda just got your hands on the original Billy and you would have gotten the credit you deserved. Anyway, I don't necessarily think Billy Idol's version is better as both versions are equally nostalgic for me but it is the one I kinda prefer.
Best Version IMO: Billy Idol - Greatest Hits - 2001
==================================== { 911th Place } [70's][ 140th Place] Song: "You Really Got Me" Band: Van Halen Album: Van Halen ---{ 1978 }--- Genre: Hard Rock Score:[7.1][5.2][5.3][7.2][5.2][4.2][7.2] = [41.4] = [5.914] Video:
Write-Up: I have owned a few Van Halen records over the years but interestingly enough I hardly ever listened to them. For some reason every album felt like a slog fest for me. There are few songs of theirs that I even consider to be worthy of replayability. I pretty much annoyed myself to death with the band when Guitar Hero Van Halen was released actually. I didn't realize how much I didn't care for the band until that came out but as I am super OCD and was a mega fan of the Guitar Hero series I had to play and master every track they put on the disc. My favorite songs in the game weren't even Van Halen songs lol. Talk about a sad release of a game. Now the Metallica Guitar Hero on the other hand... was fantastic imo. Anyway, this tune is great for some folks but I can barely call it mediocre imo. ====================================

Write-Up: Kinda regretting atm not bumping this one a bit higher if only for my liking of Symphonic Metal. Unfortunately I have gone through the score and set each point value as high as I can honestly put it without cheating the system. The main riff is pretty cool and I love the guitar in the background. I hadn't heard of this tune before it was nominated here but I have written down the band and will eventually check out some more of their work. I'm not really sure what the message of the song is here as I didn't have a ton of time to break it down. The unfortunate part of ranking such a large list I suppose but I'm still confident the score is right where it should be this time around. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Not a bad classic Soft Rock song but kinda slow and without the sort of build and climax I prefer to hear in the music I listen to. The song is actually a favorite among the many lists I even found it on and it did well on the charts. It seems a little bit more folk to me but Soft Rock is pretty much how it is classified everywhere I looked. I don't have a ton to say about the song and I'm not even all that familiar with James Taylor as an artist tbh so the score here and short write-up might reflect that. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Never really liked this song tbh. I may actually be impartial to Kenny Loggins at this point though since it is the 3rd of his songs to drop in the bottom half of this ranking. It's near impossible not to hear or think about the 80's here imo. The song was featured on the Footloose soundtrack but I'm pretty sure it later appears in a compilation album. It's the last of your 80's selections to drop btw Dragon. You still got three nominations left. I'm pretty sure this appeared in a Family Guy episode but I don't remember which one. I definitely know it appears in GTA V as I've cruised around destroying s*** to it before. It saw moderate success on the charts and it is one of Kenny Loggins' most recognizable songs. ====================================

==================================== { 907th Place } [70's][ 138th Place] Song: "Rock 'N Me" Band: Steve Miller Band Album: Fly Like An Eagle ---{ 1976 }--- Genre: Rock Score:[6.2][4.3][5.2][7.1][5.3][3.3][10.1] = [41.5] = [5.928] Video:
Write-Up: I don't really have anything positive or negative to say about this song. I don't really like it or hate it tbh. It sounds like both a classic beat and a mediocre one too. The point is I guess is I'm very middle of the road on my opinion here. The song was the 2nd #1 hit for the band in 9 albums. Steve Miller pretty much wrote, composed and performed the song almost entirely by himself and there has been debate to whether or not Steve deserved all the credit himself or if the band were owed that credit equally. When the single was released the credit went to Steve as a person and by the time the European release came about the credit went to the band. The song appears in Rock Band 2 and GTA V. ====================================
