It sounds like you heard a part of one song and that's about it.

Seriously, there are literally metal singers who have operatic voices and rarely 'scream'. It's as diverse as saying, 'pop music' or 'rock music'.

Screamo isnt a genre. Its what people outside of familiarity with metalcore/post-hardcore call it.

Something called Meshuggah. I shoulda got the hint when one of their songs is named Bleed, but still.

She suggested other artist and bands of other genres for me to try, and I dont think our tastes are that similiar. But thats her heavy metal representative, so maybe Im judging too quickly.

This, and what other types of music are you into? See, I like classic 'hair' metal from the 80's (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc) but I also love folk metal. One of my favorite bands is Turisas, who combine Viking history with heavy metal. There is also a really awesome band called Tengger Cavalry, who combine metal with Mongolian Folk music.

I also enjoy some of the industrial/techno infused stuff like KMFDM, Megaherz, and Rammstein. You also have stuff like Lord of the Lost which is a bit more gothic rock, but has some metal and industrial influence. It's incredibly diverse.

Heavy metal can mean so many things.

Modern metal can be screamo or it can be as melodic/catchy as Ghost. Thats not even touching on the classics like Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, etc that were all melodic.

Wow. She didn't fuck around with sending you right into the deep end of the pool. Meshuggah shouldn't be anyone's first metal band, they're intermediate-level at a bare minimum.

Start with Black Sabbath and move on from there. If you like the slower, more ominous side of things, head into doom metal. If you like the faster side, head into speed metal. Both genres employ clean vocals.

Depending on what you like, you might start heavier. Opeth was the first metal band I really got into, and they're progressive death metal. Roaring growls and hard-hitting riffs and everything - but they also have a strong progressive side, which appealed to my love of prog rock, so that's how I got into it. Now at this point there's really no upper limit to the aggression I can handle.

Tbh, I barely know about metal and whats what.

My family grew up calling anything with a guitar in it white people music, and would shut it down. So Im extremely ignorant.

Im kinda a rock newbie too. I cant really tell whatis defined as rock vs metal besides if someone is screaming or not. At least I thought. I didnt know there was such variation.

To be fair to my friend, she did ask repeatedly what I liked to listen to, and I was adamant I listened to anything. Guess I was wrong.

Will definitely try these out.

Honestly, I've been listening to metal for most of my life, and I don't like them, so grain of salt.

Like Link said, though, there is a whole scale of different styles. Pretty much any genre you can think of has probably been mixed with metal. Hell, Christmas Carols have been combined with Metal (Trans-Siberian Orchestra). Link's suggestions, though, are more into the heavier, more technical side. There are some lighter bands and some bands that mix a lot of other genres.

Personally, I'd start with some earlier stuff. Black Sabbath is a solid suggestion, and the 'Glam' and "Hair' Metal bands of the 80's and early 90's are really easily accessible. I'd definitely recommend Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, and Megadeth for your first few bands. That should give you a wide variety of the roots of the genre.

Metallica is the perfect metal starting band. Master of Puppets or Ride The Lightning albums. Rust In Peace by Megadeth is another. Reign In Blood by Slayer if you want to start getting a bit closer to extreme metal. Thrash metal is a good place to start. Vulgar Display of Power by Pantera is a step heavier than Slayer. If you want to get a bit heavier and bit more progressive try Magma by Gojira. If you want a more alternative metal try White Pony by Deftones. If you want some early metal classics try Paranoid by Black Sabbath or Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden.

Fair enough. I just think that starting with more than just Black Sabbath is probably a good idea if he's unfamiliar with rock music in general. Even as a second step, Doom and Speed Metal could give a listener the wrong idea about what Metal is capable of.

I think I see the issue... I dont actually know what these terms mean?

Itunes categorizes people I thought were rock into Alternative instead...

I tried listening to a few samples of Megadeth, Black Sabbath, and of Iron Maiden, and they seem to lack... energy? I dunno the right word? Like, I cant see myself getting into the songs at all. Obviously I only listened to a few, and not the full songs, but... it seems like its people talking slightly louder than normal?

Deftone seems pretty good so far... I like this one. Its great I have a good starting point. Im gonna try to research all these guys to see what I like though. So far Ive not ran into anyone like Meshuggah, which is comforting.

Just like any other genre, sub-genres are basically non-existent outside of their respective communities.

Yeah, that'd be an inhibiting factor to all of this. I could give you a really quick rundown on the basics of metal music but, for the most part, every metal subgenre out there is nothing more than "take another metal subgenre and tweak the methods somehow." Playing faster or slower, altering the guitarwork to be more technical or more aggressive, bringing in an outside musical influence like folk or electronic, etc.

Eh... a bit of both? Like, I typically like faster pace songs. But I also prefer more emotional range to what I listen to, maybe?

I listened to Number of the Beast, Wasted Years (I actually didnt mind this one), Run to the Hills, Powerslave for Iron Maiden.

Peace sells, Tornado of Souls, Rust in peace for Megadeth.

Paranoid, Iron Man, and Heaven and Hell for Black Sabbath.

Of the three, I definitely like Iron Maiden the most, but the songs seems... hollow? Like theres something less lively?

I know theres negative perceptions of them, but Linkin Park and Fallout Boys are really the only exposure I have to rock at all; I like them mostly... then theres specific songs I like like Anthem of the Lonely by 9 lashes or Diary of Jane by Breaking Benjamin. But I only find these via Youtube recommendations, so I dunno if thats just basically radio music or not.

I mean, slow stuff I can like. Evanescence is rock, right? I like her.

I'd check out Judas Priest if I were you. They are known for their singer having an operatic range (he doesn't have the more gravelly voice of Mustaine, for example), and their music tends to be a bit faster/higher energy. Some will class them as a rock, as well, as they can be cheesy at times, but I'd still class them as metal (they are also super fun live);
