Pokemon the movie is the 6th highest grossing anime film of all time, with pokemon 2000 coming in spot 10. And the Pokmon movies collectively are the second highest grossing series of anime movie franchises to date.

The show and the games, collectively, did that. But the game got popular because of the show. Without the show, which was nothing more then a very effective marketing tool for the games and movies, the game simply would've been a niche underrated classic instead of the mainstream juggernaut it grew to be.
