A day for travel there and a day for travel back if you need to travel to visit family. And when I lived in va we had to make a 5 hour one way trip every Thanksgiving. Then back again. IDK how other people's family did it but usually we wanted to be their the day ahead cause my mom was going to help my grandma do some of the cooking. To be fair teachers never scheduled major class work for this week since there were kids and families who would take the whole week off.
