Heh, the yellow vests stuff is very interesting. They're going around burning and smashing things, and the middle-class establishment types are wringing their hands.

I don't find French history THAT interesting, though, Fairly interesting, but not very interesting.

I sometimes think about all the repressive / coercive systems spread over German history, and how awfully they're treated people; but I also think about how there were people who were willing to stand up to them, against groups like the Nazis, and the Stazi.

Why couldn't Germany just act normally, and let people vote for leaders, and live their lives in peace?

Anyways the way I view it, part of the reason WWII happened is because the whole mindset of the victors of a war taking war spoils was still very much in the heads of world leaders. Post-WWI, the Allies had their war debts wiped out, but Germany was on the hook for $33 billion as it was deemed responsible for the war.

Can you not imagine the contempt the German people held for the rest of the world? It was only a matter of time before someone tapped into that massive amount of negative energy.

Hell, the same war spoils mindset happened at the end of WWII. The Soviets used it to expand their territory, and the Allies used their part of Germany that was carved out to promote capitalism and democracy. Yeah, Germany was no longer the antagonist after WWII, but it wasnt altruism that motivated that.

Also theyre a democracy now. Idk if you were implying they werent but yeah.

I understand the reasons for WW2. It was largely because of bitterness, feelings of resentment and oppression, etc.

Also, you made reference to the "contempt" the German people had for the rest of the world, in the 1930s. You don't think we had contempt for them in the last 1940s? They had waged war on a bunch of countries, killing many people in warfare, and killed millions of Jews and other people they deemed "undesirable" in concentration camps - and worst of all, at the Nuremberg Trials, most of them were unrepentant!

It's amazing that a country could exist like that, in the 20th century. And there's still a German arrogance in this topic...like they're better than the rest of us. That hasn't gone away too much, at least, judging from what someone said a while ago.

They were bad because they didn't care about genocide, or the other bad stuff I mentioned. It was really obvious what I meant.

Germany was economically devastated after WWI. The Great Depression made things even worse. You cant imagine them being rightfully justified in being angry for being stuck footing the bill for the entire Great War? This is not them feeling superior, this then being stuck in a desperate situation.

Hitler took all of the sadness, anger and desperation and morphed them into a twisted weapon to suit his purposes.

Rightfully justified in being angry and bitter? Uh, they were one of the main causes of WW1. Wilhelm II thought that Germany had a "right" to expand, and be a great nation again.

The Allies get their debts forgiven even though money is definitely a cost of war. This is shifted onto Germany when they clearly have no means of paying this back because you know, they just lost a huge war.

Imagine their disappointment when they lost the Second World War as well, and had to - for the second time - pay back crippling debts.

Were almost to 500 posts. I hope you realize that Germany 100 years ago and Germany today are completely different situations by now.

As losers of the war, yes they need to suffer consequences. But just like Trump was blamed on economic anxiety, Hitler was borne out of similar (but much more dire) circumstances.

You dont have to agree with the reasoning the German people used, but there is a clear line of cause and effect here.
