I have never been to Germany.

I love their cars, and I like Diane Krueger LOL. I would love to experience Oktoberfest.

I have read that theyre to blame for the situation of the PIIGS countries (Portugal Ireland Italy Greece Spain) and that theyre rather smug about it, like, they think its simply because Germans are superior or something, so that does annoy me.

Just recommended? How is this doing anything bad to them? The other countries could've told them to fuck off. Although, I admit, Greek austerity looked very tough on the population on, back a few years ago. I can't remember if they're still in austerity, though.

You know, there's something I can't figure out about West Germany. Was the chancellor the top position in the government, or president? I assumed it was chancellor, since that's the current highest position in German politics, but the way the information is laid out on Wikipedia, in the panel to the right of the page, on Wikis for a couple of chancellors, it appears that president is higher.

After reading something on Wiki, the main position was actually chancellor. The president was like a king or queen in a constitutional monarchy, in theory at the top, but actually largely powerless. Which is good. <_<

I'm meant to be getting 2 history books for Christmas, one on the Nazi regime, one on German history in general, so the latter will probably contain interesting information on West Germany. Also, I still don't know much about earlier German times.

Here's a question for you all. It's about the German workplace. In the average British / American workplace, the people scheme, plot, cheat, lies, and slander to get promoted. Okay, this is a slight exagerration, but it's basically accurate IMHO. There's plenty of politics, people messing with each other, and so on. Is the German workplace like this, or is it, well...nice? I assume it's the same as other Western workplaces, whether it be an office or factory, because Germans strike me as quite ethical in the workplace, but I wasn't sure. I'd like to think Germans get promoted / do well in their careers, because they work so hard, rather than because they lie and scheme, but then again, I've never worked in a German workplace.

depends on the companies. If you work in a big corporation like VW or whatever, you will have all sorts of people trying to claw their way to the top by any means. All that really matters there are numbers and performance.

It's a lot different if you work in a small or medium size company. Where everything is a lot more close and personal. Lying and cheating won't get you far there.

Background:

Imagine you have a strong industrial base. Then your neighbor doesnt.

You two guys trade, but since you produce much, much more, while your neighbor is more about the tourism, the pleasures in life, etc, and some industry too, but less advanced, there is a trade imbalance. You end exporting a lot to your neighbor, and he ends importing a lot from you.

That wouldnt usually be a problem, since your neighbor can just devalue their currency and balance things out a bit again.

Up on post # 2: the problem

The problem:

You and your neighbor are now in a trade union called the European Union. Now there are no tariffs, AND they cant devalue their currency to mitigate the situation.

The result? You get richer with each export, and they get poorer. Their more uncompetitive industries just cant compete with you too.

You enrich while they get poor.

Coming in post # 3 - the issue gets worse

So you (Germany) have people who save save save money. PIIGS citizens spend spend spend.

German banks werent crazy about it, money in the bank is money not spent. Money in the bank is not producing interest income for the banks. These German citizens will take their fortunes to their graves!, German banks think.

The solution? Lend a shitload of money to the piigs countries!!! Now thanks to the EU, lending is safer! Lend away!

The PIIGS countries ger loans they cant pay for. You know they cant pay for them either, but that is not your problem! You are a superior, more disciplined, smarter people, its not your fault that they arent making wise financial decisions! So by all means, give them more rope so they sung themselves, if they do that pay you the EU will!

So then the global recession happens. You (Germany) want your money! Time is up, so pay up PIIGS countries!

Wait, you cant? YOU MUST PAY!

You see, its not your fault (Germany) that these Mediterranean, non-blonde peoples have such fiscal indiscipline! While they party and squander the money you loaned them, you were too busy with your smart, disciplined, hard working days! They had their OPA, siesta, vino and beer time, but now they have to face the music!

So you decide to have the EU intervene and bail them out. But you.... errrrr.... I mean, the EU ( TOTALLY not Germany... wink wink) will bail them out, but with strings attached... Enter austerity

You see, if they are going to get more money they better make use of it! So you will make sure that your Superior German ways are forced on them. Cut spending, cut social safety nets, cut pensions, and live precariously. SURE! That will make sure their economies get healthy again and they can pay you.

... only it doesnt. Turns out that people with no money to spend dont spend money (who would have thought!?) and thus their economy shrinks... now its going to be even harder to pay!

Then Greece in the midst of their crisis elect a bunch of neo Nazis called the Golden Dawn Party (lmao Nazis Greeks is an oxymoron, sort of like a 45 supporting Hispanic) who do Neo-Nazi stuff and makes people and markets even more twitchy.

Meanwhile, you continue to sneer at them... theyre so inferior! Theyre so undisciplined! They totally deserve it, you tell yourself, while you call your friend the EU and demand *gasp* more austerity

Interesting, SFA. They lent money they knew countries would struggle to pay back, to benefit themselves, and then said the countries were irresponsible to accept the loans, so it was there own fault.

Germans do have a reputation for arrogance, I suppose. At various points in their history, thinking they're better than other countries. You know, I guess there's even a name that describes stuff they've done, and why they think they're better than us.

Having said that, certain other nations have pretty arrogant attitudes. America, for example. Thinking that they're the only democratic nation in the world, that America is the only place you can really achieve anything. France is also pretty smug.

The problem is when they decide to lend money to places that they know cant pay, because the EU will back the debt, and then feeling smug about the outcome...
