Here some communist Russia jokes, sometimes in the same vein as the East Germany jokes. There's also a modern Russia joke at the bottom.

I suppose WW2 is probably still considered the war to end all wars. Or is that WW1? Either way, it was partly of fully the Germans starting them. Germany was pretty aggressive in the 20th century.

@ALIEN_WORK2HOP

I have some questions about Germany. Do you mind answering them? It's both modern Germany and historic Germany.

1. What are your thoughts on the Stasi? Were they as bad as people say?

2. Was Hitler really the most evil person of the 20th century, as a lot of people and historians say, or was he "just" another evil person? Aren't people like Stalin, or Trujillo, or maybe Ted Bundy more evil?

3. Where is Germany currently, politically? Centre, centre-left, centre-right, or what?

4. How is a modern anti-semite treated by Germany society? Very harshly?

5. How white is Germany? Do you think non-whites are treated badly?

6. Do you think the German "obsession" with work is healthy or unhealthy?

7. What are the most common leisure activities of the average young German?

8. Is the cost of living in Germany medium, high or low, and does it vary much by region / city?

9. Was East Germany are bad to live in as it seemed, or is this revisionist history / anti-socialist bias?

10. Was East Germany really just a puppet state of the USSR, or do you think it was reasonably independent (but obviously still socialist, and allied with the USSR)?

11. Do you think that Germany is the most important country in Europe, as a lot of people say, or just one of several important countries, along with Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, etc.?

Damn I am too lazy to answer all that in detail.

I have to say, I was born in 89 and lived in the States for 10 years of my childhood. I am probably not the best person to ask about anything related to Eastern Germany, since it stopped existing shortly after my birth and my history classes in the States didn't go into much detail.

2. Was Hitler really the most evil person of the 20th century, as a lot of people and historians say, or was he "just" another evil person? Aren't people like Stalin, or Trujillo, or maybe Ted Bundy more evil?

the structure and effeciency behind the Nazi atrocities is what makes it more evil than others imo. If you can even consider it evil at that point, those guys were straight up psychos who probably thought they were doing the right thing.

3. Where is Germany currently, politically? Centre, centre-left, centre-right, or what?

Centre left, while we have a small percentage of people who are leaning heavily to the right, the majority of the country is pretty damn liberal.

4. How is a modern anti-semite treated by Germany society? Very harshly?

due to the whole Nazi thing, we have a very low tolerance for anti-semites. Especially in a legal sense.

5. How white is Germany? Do you think non-whites are treated badly?

We are pretty white, but since the Wirtschaftswunder, we have had millions of guest workers from all over come to Germany. We have too many non- whites for them to be treated badly.

6. Do you think the German "obsession" with work is healthy or unhealthy?

We can enjoy a pretty high standard of living thanks to our storng economy, which is fueled by people who work well. So i can't say it's unhealthy.

7. What are the most common leisure activities of the average young German?

Fitness and going to the gym is booming in Germany. I would say that is number one maybe?

8. Is the cost of living in Germany medium, high or low, and does it vary much by region / city?

depends on where you are. Groceries & alcohol is extremely cheap compared to most countries I have visited.

11. Do you think that Germany is the most important country in Europe, as a lot of people say, or just one of several important countries, along with Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, etc.?

Important in which sense? We seem to be pretty important economically and politically it seems. I wouldn't know how to rate that tbh.

Thank you for answering so many questions, ALIEN.

When I said "important", I suppose I mostly meant economically. I, personally, would say it's the most important country in Europe in that sense. Culturally, I'm not sure. Maybe France or Britain? France more, though, despite Britain being part of the Anglosphere (which helps with international cultural importance).

I must admit, your answer about leisure made me laugh. Is going to the gym really considered a "leisure" activity, or exercising in general? Many people (especially me) consider that kind of thing to be punishment, not fun, plus you have to pay for it. So, is it a big thing? Is there more to it than fitness and exercise? In some countries, it's a way to meet people and "look important", you know? Are German gyms good?

I think you might be wrong about question 5, but having said that, you do live there. I saw something recently, where a black German citizen was complaining that people couldn't cope with them being both black and German AT THE SAME TIME. Having said that, it might have just meant that black people aren't treated that well in Germany, rather than non-whites in general. Is Wirtschaftswunder when all those immigrants came in 2015, or something else? Weren't most of those people in 2015 white, though, even if they were from other countries?

Yeah I think something like 10 million Germans have gym subscriptions. I mean going out clubbing and drinking is also a leisure activity, I guess more people do that probably haha.

Wirtschaftswunder was back after the war when tons of "guest workers" came to Germany to help rebuild the nation. Many of them never left so there are plenty of Germans now with foreign heritage.
Read up on it.

What you are referring to from 2015 was the refugee crises. Where we took in mostly refugees (and some migrants yes) and racists all freaked out that they were gonna turn Germany into a Middle Eastern country or something. We are doing quite fine, thanks for the worrying though.

No most of them weren't white. Unless you consider people from North Africa and the Middle east white. A few people from eastern europe came in as well, but that's nothing new.

I wouldn't really consider some black guy complaining about people not coping with the fact that he is German and black as mistreatment of none-white people. All in all we are pretty tolerant...like I said, we have way too many colored people living in Germany.

I must admit, despite my very good knowledge of Germany through the last 140 or 150 years, I had never heard or read of this. I'm actually really surprised that people were willing to come in and help rebuild Germany, even if they were paid. Was this a larger part of the Marshall Plan? But yeah, Germany was in large part rubble after 1945, and it took quite a while to rebuild things. Do you know what one of my favourite words is? Trummerfilm.

You know, East Germany really wasn't that much better than ruined Germany in the last 40s. I mean, they had infrastructure and jobs, but...it was a pretty bad place to live. Did you get a chance to read this East German jokes I was talking about? They were great.

When I went to Germany in 2003, we visited East Berlin. They were still rebuilding it. Yes, East Germany was a soviet puppet state and yes, the standards of living on the other side of the wall were much lower. I mean.. even with 14 years (at that point) of rebuilding, you could still see a very stark difference on one side of the wall to another, but you could also tell that it had been much worse before.

I've read quite a few Wiki articles, I've watched a LOT of documentaries on the subject, and I've read some fiction books on the subject. I don't know why so many people on CE say I know almost nothing about Germany, past or present. I wait, I do. Because they don't like me, and want to do baseless personal attacks. CE hasn't changed much recently.

To be fair, ALIEN, I think they were joking about Hitler. Well, probably. Maybe not some of the Trump voters. But yeah, I'm pretty sure that Germany is a landlocked country, which is nice.

a) that's sad.
b) yeah, being landlocked isn't a great thing considering that having a shore is critical for trade routes. Hell, Russia still wants Sevastopol back so they can have a warm water port again.

Did those Americans think Hitler was allowed to live after the war was won by the Allies, or something? I mean, he'd be past the age of 100 by now. Although, I suppose leaders of countries sometimes survive the wars they lose.

Just watched an interesting documentary, about a Freudian analysis of Hitler they did during his rein. It was suggested, at one point, that Hitler became crazy and wanted to invade a lot of Europe because there were problems with his toilet training, when he was a young child.

Sounds stupid, I know, but I can believe that. Problems with growing up can cause big problems when you're an adult. He was violently abused by his father, and became overly attached to his mother, perhaps. It would explain why he had problems with his interpersonal relationships with people around him, in the 30s and 40s. It would be hard for any theory to full explain someone like Hitler, of course. We may never understand him.

So? They still basically show the enemy, and show what the Allies were fighting against.

Sahara is also a really good film, the 1990s version. It's a detachment of Allied soldiers from various nations heading West (I think) through the eponymous desert, and they end up fighting a bunch of Nazis. It's based on historical fact...sort of...and is very entertaining. I suppose this again doesn't fit with people's very limited view of what a film about Germany is, but I think it's worth mentioning, and it is pretty good. I was never able to get a Region 2 copy of it, at least, not cheaply. I've seen it on TV a few times, though.
