https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/pei-legislature-school-bus-licence-1.4925800

- 12 Demerit points against your license, which are used to determine your insurance rate (for reference, an at-fault accident is 6)
- 3 month suspension of your license
- $5000 fine

And to get your license back you'll need to pay a fee and take a defensive driving class at your own cost.

Neat.

In the US the fine is smaller ($1000) and no suspension (providing you didn't cause an accident).

Makes sense. I know a number of areas have had trouble with people passing school buses. Hopefully cracking down on it will help.

Honestly... I don't think I've ever actually had to stop specifically for a school bus. I tend not to be in school zones around the times a bus would be there, so it has never been an issue for me.

If they're dropping off kids they'll have the stop sign on the side of the bus extended. During that scenario you can't overtake the bus as kids have this habit of dashing out from in front of the bus and getting hit by cars who try to pass.

It is illegal to pass a school bus that has the stop sign extended even in a lane of oncoming traffic.

Do modern school buses have dash cams? They should so they can catch these guys. Takes dangerous drivers off the street and the fines can go directly into the schools.

So by this token, can we just teach kids gun safety and remove any laws governing the use of firearms by children?

I mean it only makes sense since your assertion is that education stops all accidents.

Most busses in my area usually wait for cars to pass them before putting the blinkers on (allowing the kids to cross) so they aren't jamming up traffic. At most around here you only get delayed by a minute or two even on a really busy route.

Literally no reason to pass a school bus with their lights on.

It kind of does. It's just that "when it's safe" means "when the school bus is done loading/unloading children," which isn't generally something that anyone but the bus driver can gauge.

While passing buses can be a problem, that's a pretty ridiculous overadjustment. And the people who aren't fazed by the current, already-strict laws almost certainly aren't going to be any more discouraged by this.

Seems like it won't do anything to stop those who would pass a bus at a dangerous time, but guess it can't hurt.

Definitely seems like a reactionary law though.

....seriously? The fact that the death penalty is an ineffective deterrent on crime is pretty well-known. I'm too lazy to reference a dozen studies, so I'll just use a site which -- while somewhat biased -- references studies.

Depends if it's paired with an increase in enforcement. Increasing fines tends not to affect all that much, because the people who ignore the fines in place already do so with the belief that they won't get caught, and that belief isn't going to change without making it more likely that they get caught. Dashcams would make a whole lot more difference, especially if the footage is consistently sent to police for prosecution.

Eh, part of this is also an awareness thing, and harsher penalties draw attention to the issue with shock value. As we've seen in this very topic, there are many people who don't know how to handle school buses, so a little shock value can be helpful in that regard. The ideal strategy would be a bit of both.

Literally thought this

When the kids are walking across the street out of view and there's a big STOP sign that pops out to keep the kids from being run over? If they go past that sign anyway, then they get a suspension and a $5,000 fine.

This really isn't a hard rule to follow, the law is pretty sensible. Unless you are actually mentally ill there's no way you could break this rule.
