I actually might agree with this is the funny thing. Mappa is a studio I feel like I should enjoy a lot, but for some reason everything I've ever watched by them has fallen short in one way or another for me.

Except In This Corner of the World, which was great, but I'm not counting movies here.

I don't like idol anime because all of the ones that I've seen* are way too infectiously happy to a degree that comes off as cheesy, and also because they waste tons of screentime to bad music videos for a genre of music I don't particularly like.

*I have only seen like 3 idol anime so....yeah.

I can't speak to the music argument because I skipped every song in LL except Snow Halation.

I probably wouldn't do that nowadays, but I was still getting over my idol problems at the time.

I'd try to defend idol anime, but I have Love Live Sunshine in my top ten. Even Music Girls, the lowest-budget, mediocre idol anime I've seen so far, was still worth watching. I'm slowly watching Idol Incidents and having fun with it too, and it has a 5.71 on MAL! I seem to like even the idol anime that other idol fans dislike so there's a good chance that I'm just a crazy person. My opinion in this discussion won't count for much!

The style of it. I listen to all genres of music, and I like to think there is no bad genre of music. But Idol Music? Haven't heard any I like. I've given a few Idol anime a shot, can't do it. Don't like the music, don't like the presentation, don't like the focus on singing and dancing. Can't do it. I don't like that so much anime like to shove idols in. It's over done, and I don't like it. So, I'm not going to go out of my way to watch a show in a genre that I don't like. I'm pretty open to things, I like to give things a fair shot. But I can't do Idols.

OK but you realize that the amount of time in ZLS devoted to actual Idoling is, like....miniscule. Pretty sure actual singing time has been less than 10 minutes of the series so far, and a third of that has been scream metal and rap.

Right now you're like Pat saying Hunter x Hunter sucks because Gon wears a stupid shirt and has dumb pants.

And you know what he did?

He watched and LOVED it, even though he still hates the pants.

Well aware. A lot of buddies of mine talk about it all the time. Call it irrational or whatever you want. But it's one thing I won't give in on. A lot of shows I like and love have a lot of stuff that would cause a lot of people to get out of there without a second thought and that's fine. Me having one genre that I don't want to watch is fine. If we all liked the same things, the world would be a boring place, yeah?

Hell I gave Goblin Slayer the chance knowing there was a totally unnecessary rape scene in and dumb fanservice and ended up finding the show to be mindless entertainment at the very least still.

This convo actually reminded me to catch up on the last episode of ZLS

So for a good chunk of the episode I was just fuckin annoyed with Sakura and thinking "what the fuck are they doing with this episode, this wasn't what she was like at the first scene before she died" and then from her being on the couch watching Ai on TV it clicked like "Oh so she was ACTUALLY this defeatist who perked herself up one last time and then died"

So in retrospect I ended up enjoying the episode and that whole turn. I am curious how they'll wrap it up now though.

Nah, I know plenty of people who brush things off after I give a summary or give the genre. There are some things that some people just don't like and don't wanna watch.

Not true. For example, I hated Persona for a long time. A REALLY long time. Never gave it a chance, brushed it off every time I saw it brought up. I just sat there playing my mainline SMT ignoring Persona. Was finally convinced to give it a shot and it turned out much better than I thought. Still nothing compared to mainline SMT, but still an enjoyable series.

I've not watched shows for far stupider reasons than having idols. (Which is really not that stupid at all! Not watching a show that's in a genre you don't like is a pretty reasonable stance!)

For example I never watched Hibike Euphonium because I think the euphonium is a stupid instrument, which probably doesn't matter in the slightest to the show itself.

This is different Bane. I'm not saying it's not funny (though as of episode 2, it's not)--I'm saying it's not trying to be a comedy.

Prof--the simple answer is that there are plenty of shows that are not comedies which have individual segments that are funny.

For Zombieland Saga, I don't think the show is about Kotarou at all. Kotarou is obviously a comedic character but that's not enough to make me consider the show as a whole a comedy. I think the show is about the 7 girls and about them finding fulfillment through their singing or their friendship or whatever. I'm not 100% sure what genre I'd label it as. It's closer to drama than comedy, but drama probably isn't quite right either.

The drama and character-building in ZLS is all heavily influenced by the comedy though. Episode 8 was great and genuinely emotional but it still featured Lily literally dying because she grew a single facial hair. That isn't exactly pure drama..

Well then I have no idea what to tell you, because ZLS is constantly a riot. Having genuine powerful emotional scenes doesn't cancel that out, and almost all of those scenes are held up by the comedy surrounding it.

I do want to make it clear that I'm not making light of that bit from episode 8 it's just, if they were shooting for drama and not comedy at all, they'd have had her commit suicide. Instead her heart just explodes or something.
