Question is as simple as the title. It's been a long time since I've played a decent MMO and I'm looking to get back into it casually.

Probably FFXIV? Haven't personally played it but it seems kind of neat and is generally the go to MMO when people talk about what is closest to WoW's level.

Speaking of which, yeah there is also WoW. BFA is kind of boring though, but that may be more once you hit max and there is nothing to do but grind artifact power 2.0. Classic should also be coming out soon if you want to check that out.

For a not as known one I personally liked The Secret World and was pretty bummed it wasn't a single player game or something. Combat is generally viewed as bad but boy the story / lore and general atmosphere is great. The investigation quests are also pretty cool too.

I do enjoy FF14 a lot, but I'm looking for a change of pace. WoW is a game I tried years ago but never really was able to get into it.

I played Tera for a bit, it was ok

Swotor was good enough when I played it with my mates.

The Old Republic is also alright for the story. Specifically Imperial Agent and Light Side Sith Warrior. The Jedi Knight story is basically KOTOR 3 if it had been a thing.

Dungeons and such can also be fun if you can find people. I'm not sure how dead it is right now.

Oh so very much this. TSW was a fantastic game spoiled by MMO trappings. Unfortunately, it was completely revamped into Secret World Legends, which is a fantastic game ruined by F2P MMO trappings.

If someone could make a private server, rebalance everything for solo play, and mod in action-RPG combat, it would be one of the best games ever. As it is, it's a fantastic world populated by people who really want you to spend more time and money to see the next bit.

Seriously so many fucking cool plots going on in that game and as far as I am aware still aren't resolved. Heck even the simple side quest chains are super interesting like that author guy in the spooky lighthouse and the dude who owns the haunted amusement park (complete with chainsaw wielding clown and the fucking Bogeyman).

How did Legends change things? I kind of want to see how far the story progressed. Last time I checked Tokyo was apparently available along with checking out Ground Zero of the catastrophe that happened in the beginning of the game?

I played Tera for a bit, it was ok

I enjoyed Tera a lot when I played it (a few years ago). Combat is full real-time action and super fun, lots of really good boss fights, and the aesthetics of the game are amazing. Downside is the plot is super cardboard/forgettable.

Is it standard RPG MOM elements?

Pretty standard. You go to a camp, you do the quests, you get a quest to go to the next camp where they have more quests. After a while, you get a quest for the area dungeon.

I went back to playing Rift recently. It probably doesn't belong on the list of "Best MMOs," but I enjoy playing it and like its design at the lower levels.

Guild wars 2 was decently fun when I played it, but I kind of got burnt out on it right as the updates seemed to be getting better and better.

I really like The Old Republic, but it mostly felt like i was playing a really well fleshed out single player campaign. I can't say the "MMO" aspect really impacted my experience too much.

I got talked into playing GW2 for a bit. Thought it was fun til we got to the first expansion area.

Then it was a lot of repetition and a lot less interesting.

the big two are wow and ffxiv, both of which are pretty good, tho lately im hearing more positives about xiv than wow

i think i hear great things about elder scrolls online, but i dont resonate with that series as much as other people seem to, so i dont know much about it

Elder Scrolls Online is pretty enjoyable and can be played solo. I only play it a little every couple months or so though

I liked the slight degree of agency the story structure allowed. I played a light aligned imperial agent, which is apparently the best one narratively

I know several people that still play, or recently came back. It came out on mobile devices and basically revitalized it.
