BattleBots is back on TV with a brand new season of metal munching mayhem! Week 3 of this 16-week season airs tonight at 8PM Eastern on the Discovery Channel and will be re-run next Wednesday on the Science Channel with an additional bonus fight. Here's the fight card for this week:

8AMeH4y

The champion of the first and third seasons of the revived BattleBots, the mighty Bite Force, is back in action for the first time this year! They take on another powerful veteran in tonight's main event in the devastating drum spinner of Yeti. In the undercard we also have returning veteran bots like Skorpios, Lucky, and Monsoon, the newest creation from Team Whyachi, Hydra, and one of the most dominant robot combat teams from China making their BattleBots debut with Railgun Max. If you missed last week's episode and its re-run, it's available to watch online through the Science Channel's website, though you may need to log in with a cable provider or possibly use a VPN if it's not available in your country.

It's definitely worth checking out.

Now I'll just finish off by tagging the people who posted in last week's topic to remind them: @MJOLNRVII @Purple_Cheetah @DirkDiggles @El_Mexicano_Texano @DuneMan @LostForest @powerman1426 @PiOverlord @monkeysRfunny @MasterGakke

Then you should tune in and join us. If you like powerful spinners and big hits like those, then the new BattleBots has plenty of them. Some bots from the original series, such as Warhead and Nightmare, actually returned for earlier seasons of this rebooted BattleBots as well. As you can see in the first gif I posted, Son Of Whyachi is still competing and destroying opponents to this very day.

I agree with those picks. I also see Hydra and Railgun Max having good showings, and if Bloodsport can prove that it's more reliable than some other full-body spinners *cough*CaptainShrederator*cough* I don't think it'll have much trouble with Lucky. I know nothing about Breaker Box or Falcon, so I can't comment on that one, and I could see Warhawk vs. Petunia in the Science Channel bonus fight going either way.

No problem. I try to include as many as I can that actually took part in the discussion the previous week. If more people start joining in and I need to use more than one post mentioning people (I think there's still a limit on how many you can mention in one post) then so be it.

They were both more effective last year than I thought they would be. I'd bet on Warhawk though. Is that next Wednesday or did it already happen?

It'll air next Wednesday during the Science Channel re-run of the episode, like all of the bonus fights. It'll also likely end up on the version of the episode that gets uploaded to the Science Channel website after it airs that night too.

Oh shit, Falcon is a Team Whyachi bot too? And Breaker Box is from the team that formerly competed with Nightmare? Damn, I didn't know that. Now I'm really hyped for that fight! Plus, I didn't know that Copperhead is a new version of Poison Arrow. Another bot that I didn't know had more pedigree.

Tough loss for Copperhead. That spinner was doing some good damage to Skorpios' scoop, and Skorpios' saw didn't look it was doing much either. Unfortunately, the "break the fist by ramming it with your face" strategy worked for Skorpios, and Copperhead just... died.

It happens though. The first battle of the season can be a big help for working out problems with the bots.

Bloodsport did seem unreliable in terms of the weapon working, but it did a lot of damage while it was working, enough to get the decision.

Time for Hydra's debut! Can this flipper rival Bronco in power and showmanship?

Skorpios beat Copperhead, but Copperhead's weapon did quite a bit of damage before the bot died. Bloodsport's weapon was unreliable, but did enough damage to Lucky to get a judge's decision. Team Whyachi's new flipper bot Hydra just launched Free Shipping into orbit.

And now, former teammates are about to clash, Monsoon vs. Ragnarok.

Well, that's unfortunate. One big hit knocks something inside Ragnarok loose, it can't self-right, and it's over. Tough break.

I learned on r/BattleBots recently that they actually air these 2-hour episodes in 1-hour parts in some international markets. That's why it seems like they have a semi-main-event in the middle of the episode: because it's the actual main event of the episode in the other markets.

The Mad Catter guy's post-fight promo was low-key hilarious with him trying to impersonate Hulk Hogan. Breaker Box vs. Falcon up next! Two brand new bots from two of the oldest and most experienced teams in the game! EDIT: Underwhelming fight, it looked like both bots were having drive issues. Like I said earlier, the first fight of the season is when you learn about problems and work to fix them, especially with previously untested bots.

Ugh, cable/internet was screwing up literally right up to the airing. It's gone out at least 5 times in the last 2 days so when it went out 3 times within 1h-15m of the new episode airing I was getting really irate/antsy.

Fortunately it was behaved during the airing.

Anywho, dunno how to feel about this episode. Had a lot of new ones I was curious to see and some proven ones.

Really like the comparison demo between hydra and bronco. I gotta say hydra has one of those really nice looking designs, so long as they can improve the traction and timing I can see it doing well. Seems like a more defensive and lower bronco with better response time potential. Not sure how its self righting performs, so that could be a breaker.

Speaking of breaking things. At the start of a fight 'I want to root for mad catter just for the name and design, but deep down I know it's going to go the other way' Then that happened 'bit worse than I was expecting'

Also the editing and not wanting to mention other competitions makes me ugh. Breaker box has been around for roughly 11 years, so them acting like it was a brand new never before used bot was bugging me. I can only assume because it's new to battlebots(was used in robogames and others) and is even still around 220 pounds vs 250, as hinted by 'it's a bit under weight' It at least sorta lived up to its past. Run around and smash things while doing a dance, just hope they got the battery/drive motor sorted for the other fights.

Yeah... Skorpios has a lot of those wins... I still remember it winning the 'push fight' from last season despite having its weapon broken, IIRC, almost the entire match. As such, I will cheer for its demise.

Hopefully they treat those 1 hour parts as full episodes, instead of how Sci Channel treated Robot Wars last year by cutting out tons of stuff and supplying the most generic side-dub announcing ever.

Yeah, that demonstration was cool (one of the benefits of having the 2-hour episodes is more fun extra stuff like that) and seeing it launch Free Shipping that high was a treat. That and Railgun Max splitting Mad Catter in half were definitely the highlights of this week.

They don't want to mention other robot combat competitions (like Robot Wars, Robogames, King Of Bots) by name or show any footage from them, so they have to skirt around it. They did mention Team Carbide's championships in the UK and China when Cobalt fought earlier in the season, but didn't refer to those other competitions or the team's other bots by name. They're probably just playing it safe to avoid legal issues.

IIRC Battlebots like to have teams use robots that only appear in their show. This applies even if the bots are similar. Like, I believe Tombstone in Battlebots is usually called Requiem in other competitions because it's 'just' a substantially similar bot.

Yeah, I know why they do it. Once the name is used in battlebots it can't be used in other competition and is owned by battlebots, sorta like how sewer snake was stinger or touro maximus is minotaur or foxic is foxtrot. Copyright/toy production reasons.

To be fair, them acting like the event takes months or weeks to complete is already on that level of 'yeah right...' for anyone who is slightly informed. In their defense breaker box was never used in battlebots, so I guess it works for anyone who is oblivious to robogames and the last 10 years because it's honestly not that televised. * I ofcourse refer to robot combat in general

I'm ok with it, but you know that tingling 'u lie' sensation you get when you know it's purely done for editing/production.

Stepping away I was reminded of a perfect example of how the show and obliviousness leads to dumb moments. Go look up practically any last rites fight and there will almost gaurantee be at least 1 comment. A recent(4ish years) comment saying last rites is a rip off of tombstone or how last rites should fight tombstone to prove it's able to keep the design. It's pretty lulz.

Yeah, stuff like that tends to happen with oblivious fans. It's just like in pro wrestling. WWE has built their own "WWE Universe" by pretty much never mentioning other promotions, to the point where most of their casual fans only know about WWE or automatically assume that WWE is the only good wrestling product out there. For decades, they've been intentionally trying to keep their fans as oblivious and unaware of other alternative products as possible, because educated wrestling fans that know about those alternatives tend to prefer those alternatives.

I don't think BattleBots is necessarily trying to do the same thing, or at least not to the same manipulative and malicious extent. But even in this age where the internet is everywhere, trying to limit the knowledge and exposure of alternative products is still a viable strategy.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver did a segment specifically about the WWE and part of that detailed the other leagues that were pushed into obscurity. In the end, Vince is not only an asshole, but he plays one on TV too. :P
