When he kept repeating "the hitboxes on the spikes are not correct" (or whatever he was saying), it was closest I've seen him come to being legitimately funny in a long time. To die and just turn to the camera and deadpan say "the hitboxes on the spikes are not correct" is something an entertaining streamer might do, and for a little while he wasn't bitching about money, insulting anyone, or sitting there saying nothing. Unfortunately, he couldn't keep it up and was soon back to raging at the game and claiming the level creator must have cheated. And by the end he was whining that he needed to end the stream so he could go take a shit.

Just thought I'd give him a little credit for a rare moment of not being completely terrible.

I don't think they are, the are programmed like they were back then: the whole "block" is a no go zone, so the minute you come into contact with the zone, you are dead, it's not based on the size or shape of the sprite that comes into contact with it. That means that there never can be any deviation, and if you understand the size of the hitbox, it actually becomes easier. This is how hard levels can exist that require pixel perfect jumps, thanks to that consitency.

And as always, Phil shows the inability to adapt to what he is doing.

At one point he was saying something about Nintendo not making difficult levels like that in the main games. Well, no shit. The main games are marketed towards a general audience. Difficult custom levels are not meant for the average player, they're geared towards players of a higher skill level who enjoy that kind of challenge. It's the same as those Kaizo Mario games. It makes no sense for a casual Mario player to rage at something clearly intended for a much more serious player.

It's especially bad for Phil to complain so much when you could see that most of it was his own fault. I'll agree with him that the spike hitboxes seem a little wonky, but anyone else would learn from the first dozen or so deaths and change their strategy. Even without the questionable hitboxes, though, Phil was mistiming jumps, missing jumps completely ("I pushed jump!"), not stopping when he needed to, and just generally playing poorly. He got more and more frustrated until he couldn't even consistently get through the easier sections anymore. I tried to give him credit for being kind of funny and handling things better than usual early on, but, ultimately, DSP can't help being DSP.

Edit: I watched the whole David Davidson video of this, and now I feel bad for giving him any credit. That was the closest I've seen him come in a couple years to not being a complete douchebag, and he was still completely toxic through most of it. Even when I was looking to see something positive in him, even a tiny little bit, it was completely overshadowed by his usual behavior.

Spikes were never a big thing in the early Mario games. I think 2 had some spikes on floors in a few levels, and 3 had some spikes on floors, ceilings, and a couple walls, but they were pretty uncommon. They were certainly not something you encountered frequently enough that you'd specifically remember the hitbox mechanics on them. The problem was not so much the hitboxes as it was Phil running into the spikes because he jumped too far (or not far enough). But that was, as he ranted about, the problem of the piece of shit controller he was using.

So the issues he had were:
-the spike hitboxes were wrong and unfair
-the level was designed to be literally impossible/the designer cheated
-the controller didn't work
-he couldn't concentrate because he had to shit so bad

I could just imagine if Phil got an actual Kaizo or Kaizo-like level from someone (like one of BarbarousKing's levels, as an example). Of course, if someone paid for it, he wouldn't care and would just immediately quit, instead of trying to get better at the game.

As for the spikes, I don't think the hitbox was the entire square in the first Mario Maker, which is why some people are complaining about it, and these are people that have put thousands of hours into the first game.

I've seen a couple actual good MM2 streamers mention that the spike hitboxes are a little off compared to MM1, but they adapted. I doubt Nintendo is going to patch something so trivial, so one just has to accept that this is the way things are now. Phil, however, can't do that.

It's like how he would constantly bitch about lag or the speed being too fast in whatever version of SSF2T he played last. I've got news for you, Phil: you're never going to play the original arcade version against a live person again in your life, so you need to adapt to this since it's the only thing you can play. Nope, he'll just complain about it instead of trying to change. Nothing he could do.

He honestly believes he is entitled to that money, but also incidently forgets that he banned the person who made that level from his chat. But damn he was toxic, I still can't believe how he was shitting on a person buying something Phil himself put on the wishlist. Gift horses and all that.

But Phil has taken a new step in his toxicity: so far he has blamed everything under the sun, but now (as stated above) he is blaming genetics and his mom's side of the family for having "large" thumbs, which makes it harder for him to press the apropiate buttons. Every time you think he can't stoop any lower, he'll break those expectations: the music is too loud, the graphics are too good and now he actually blames his mom why he sucks at games.

Kat really hit the jackpot with such a fine specimen of the human race. I for one, feel fucking ashamed for her.

This is how Phil has always been though, he has always manipulated and taken advantage of people in his life and has always blamed everyone but himself for issues that have come up. Just look at what the fighting game community has to say about him. I think what has happened is that his online "career" has made him more reclusive and has impacted his social skills to the point where all the negative aspects of his personality are just more obvious than they were back in his street fighter days.

He tried to retcon the Wolverine action figure story, even though he was the one who told the original version of it. He literally said that his parents were "fucking stupid" for not getting him the toy, but somehow it's the detractors' fault for trying to make him look bad.

I wonder if he ever regrets his legacy. I know he'd never admit it, but there's gotta be times when he looks at how things have turned out (ie: he's turned his dream job into something he hates, he's an internet laughingstock, he has to beg strangers for money almost every day of his life, he's lost every friend he ever had) and wishes he had never tried to turn his YouTube hobby into a career. I'm sure his response would be a rant against the detractors who ruined his life, but if he had stayed in Connecticut, got a normal job, and maybe continued to make videos in his spare time, his life might be so much better right now.

Yeah he might be a little controversial and everyone can see through him, unless he starts using the N word or actually show his dick on stream, he is gonna stay forever.

That is, of course, till the well dries up. And when that starts to happen, it's going to be a glorious shitfest.

Yeah, Twitch will never ban him. His e-begging doesn't violate their terms of service, and he has just enough restraint to avoid saying or doing anything that could get him in real trouble. Phil from a few years ago would've gotten banned pretty quickly, but modern Phil is far too cautious.

Yeah I caught that too, this is unbelievable. Look, I get that getting married doesn't have to be all end all of happy days. I mean, my wife and I wanted to get married, but we didn't have a desire to make something huge out of it. So I won't hold that against Phil.

But referring to the days that you got married, saw your parents, and did other activities as "hated every second of it" is beyond words for me.

Like I said, your wedding doesn't have to be anything huge, but if you "hated every second of it" you might want to reconsider a few things.

Also, Phil loves saying that people tried swatting his parents, which is a baldfaced lie. But if people really wanted to hurt his parents, all they have to do is record clips like this, put them on an USB and mail that to his parents. If they see who their son really is, it would cause irreparable damage.
