If you are used to the old delay from playing the old Mario games on a CRT everything will feel slightly off. I know the first time I played a Mario way way way back on a newer screen everything felt way off.

I find it really difficult to judge how hard a level is while Im making it.
Im always concerned that its too easy because Im having no trouble while I test it, but I put everything there and know exactly what to do so I have an unfair advantage so maybe its actually super hard ????

like I have no idea how difficult the one I just uploaded [HWG-VXT-TCG] is. I got through the pre-upload run super quick, but its got some stuff that seems like it could be hard without the foreknowledge I had.

No. There was an official one. And it was much easier to find and share levels. You could bookmark a level on the site, then go on the game it it would be right there in your bookmarks. No entering in the codes and shit.

Uhhh, when you first upload a level does it appear instantly in Course World? I fiiinally finished Thwomp Stomp 4 today (mostly did aesthetic touches today but also found some things that needed cheese prevention) and first, it was on the "please wait" screen for like a whole minute. I was getting scared and wasn't looking at the screen when it stopped. Then it finished, with me not seeing what it said, but it had a big checkmark flag by it in Course Maker so I thought it was up. Buuuut it says 0 courses uploaded in Course World :(

Really don't feel like doing a third run through it without the checkpoints to upload. (I did a second one after I found something that can happen in the very very last room and I wanted to reduce chances of death there because that is more of a reward screen after the gauntlet than anything). Hopefully it will appear soon.

The level fucking rocks though.

Okay never mind! Went right back to try and upload it again and it's letting me do it. Yay! Guess it just errored out the first time. Fortunately I didn't mess with the editor at all and it let me upload it right away without beating it again. Good to know I can do that if...when I make more brutal levels in the future.

This is probably both the easiest and the shortest of the Thwomp Stomp levels funny enough though. And it's certainly neither easy nor short. Will edit this post with the ID in a minute. :D

I learned a lot yesterday going back and playing some of my courses from that game. Like...I'm a lot nicer with power-ups now! Even though the third checkpoint onward I'm mean again. Mulled over changing that for a while and decided not to. Also definitely going to make a course based completely around the last section (the one where the final boss music plays, not the one little screen after) because that is just too fun.

Its tough because you have to go in knowing the average player is going to only have 5 lives to judge your level. So you want to be short and sweet if you are going to challenge them.

Personally I like to put in one or two difficult moments that build on mechanics I have already showcased. Often rewarding them for maintaining a power up by essentially letting them eat a hit to get by at the end.

Longer levels I would definitely keep to easy or medium difficulty the whole way through.

stage is too long and dying in the last section is no fun due to no checkpoint right before. That section right at the second checkpoint took like 20 lives to get through and your lava bubbles on tracks don't line up the same each time.
A mushroom before the boss don't cut it.

You should play my Mario Maker 1 levels! This is nothing. But yes, one of my biggest complaints with the original is having only 2 checkpoints and nothing has changed there!

E: And yep, I know those lava bubbles don't end up the same since it's dependent on when you activate them, but in my play testing there was nothing that wasn't easily doable. Well, there was, but that's when I decided to make them normal-sized lava bubbles and not mushroom-enhanced ones.

So I finally got my copy of the game! Just playing some story mode right now but I definitely want to play everyone levels. I probably won't be making many(if any myself) but I look forward to all yours.

So man I gotta say... one of the first things I noticed is just how UGLY the New Super Mario bros style is, geez. Like I run around a bit in the cool 3D story mode space and then play a couple levels of 3D World style and I'm appreciating how great it looks, then I get to a New style level and it's just yuck, what happened lol.

once I realized that everything was sprites made from the original 3D models instead of actual 3D models like in 3D World it struck me why NSMB looks so rough. Theres so much animation missing that was present in actual NSMB. The enemies motion just doesnt look fluid.

speaking of 3D World, its frustrating me a bunch right now as I try to make a Koopa car level. why arent dotted line blocks in the 3D World style?
And why can I hit a POW block by jumping normally, but I cant do it when im in the car? I can hit ? Blocks and On/Off switches in the car... why make that inconsistent? its so weird.

Yeah I noticed that too, it's especially noticeable on big enemies. And since 3D world is fully modeled and animated, I really don't get the decision. Very strange indeed.

Alright, I reuploaded Thwomp Stomp 4 with a kinder start at the second checkpoint. Mushroom added and there's still a progressive power-up shortly after. Also changed a few enemy placements.

Thwomp Stomp IV: A New Thwomp
Style: Super Mario World

I also realized that I actually may like the level more in NSMBU style. Ascending the castle in the vertical sections is just so much more aesthetically pleasing.

So how do you guys feel about the online multiplayer? Somehow I still haven't checked it out but heard it was pretty laggy. Think I'll try it in a few.

Ive definitely had some lag issues with online, but I think its mostly been ok

Its a super inconsistent experience. Sometimes ill have a tense match decided by actual platforming skill, other times its a bunch of garbage nonsense basically based on who got out of the starting box first. both experiences count equally towards your rating, so it can be pretty frustrating to lose to some random bullshit.

but when its good... its so good.

The part where you just hit the on switch? Yeah, just hit it and stay alive! My technique is to usually hit it three times with full bounces - it works out perfectly so the switch gets turned on and the Thwomp gets back into position on the rail where you won't hit it again. Otherwise I'd consistently hit it a second time and screw myself.

And yep, I was tempted to be more evil in the "final boss" section but wasn't! Key here is to use high spin jumps to gain more view of the screen but otherwise stay low. Staying near the middle is also recommended (until you see the coins).

My main problem was the fireballs on the rail were difficult to avoid (always took one hit there) and it took me awhile to figure the proper angle on the jump through the gap

after the first check point theres this bit where you fall down on a thwomp that turns off a switch and then you have to ride it into the switch again, and it was weirdly hard to make the Thwomp charge while on top of it, and I think the complication of trying to do that would make me miss the jump sometimes when I got to work because I was sure when it would actually start moving.... I got stuck there for a long time.

I screwed up riding the thwomp right before that a bunch too. Judging how far to jump forward to keep up with it is sort of tough.

and then it took some adjusting to figure out the start after the 2nd checkpoint because you can jump off a giant Thwomp way lower than it looks like you should be abl3 to. It was actually much easier than I thought it was, but took a while for me to nail down
