I should not have to feel ashamed because I didn't add an arbitrary 20% self-imposed tax on my meal just because all y'all damn tourists do it.

Americans, when you come to Scotland, embrace Scottish culture. Be miserable, pay miserably, tip never. Discuss at length why your server didn't deserve a tip for performing a standard function of their job description. Cast gloomy looks at the people around you for occupying the same physical space. Complain about the beer prices, but empty your wallet on them anyway. That's how we do.

yes but in Europe tips are smaller because wages are higher and food us more expensive

In the U.S. eating out is cheap and staff are underpaid but you're expected to tip a lot more

Eating out is not always cheap lol. My favorite steakhouse is $30 a person minimum.

Also whats up with your supermarkets adding tax on at the till, and not on the label. That's mean.

A lot of places will just add a standard gratuity to the menu, so it will say "service charge applies" or something.

I find steak is kind of an overpriced and underwhelming experience for the most part. Not that it could be any cheaper in most restaurants, but simply that if we're just talking about a nice piece of steak cooked medium rare or whatever, you can pretty much just do that at home.

Ed-in-Bruh

Scots often roll the last bit, so its like -Brrruh

Yes I know, it makes no sense.

Also it's glaz-go, not glass-cow.

Is $30pp really cheap for dinner where you live? Here in NZ that would be expected at a more formal restaurant, and a high end place is up to maybe $40 per main, but "cheap" is more like under $20.

This is in NZD, of course, and includes taxes. There are no tips.

That would be about $42 AUD which I would consider to be expensive but not unusual for a good steak. I would never call it cheap.

But conversion rates can throw things all out of wack. US was a lot cheaper for me when our dollar was closer to parity but that's not the case anymore. Auckland seemed pretty similar to Sydney going by my memory. You guys had some good breakfast deals!

We love it so far. Don't need to drive because everything is relatively walkable. Everyone is really patient with us not speaking the language. still trying to adjust to Celsius & kilometers. On multiple occurrences english speaking ppl have heard I'm from the US and have tried to talk NFL or MLB with me & I have had to let them down easy because I'm a nerd. Didnt know US sports were so popular overseas

Some benchmarks

0-10C = cold
15C = mild, like you could wear just a shirt but not feel warm either
15-25C = warm
25C+ = hot

1km = 10 minute walk
3km = half hour walk
5km = uber bro

For km to miles it's x1.6km = 1 mile, and it's easy enough to do the calculation if you're unsure. You can approximate by doing 1.5x, or dividing to 2/3rds.
