It's a ironic twist of fate, isn't it? People lose their homes because of rising property taxes or banks foreclosing on them and then have to camp out in areas that ironically lower the property values of local homes.

I knew where it was going, but I still laughed.

While I agree that it's ironic, I'm not sure it warranted two mentions of irony. That's too many mentions.

Working in private security for several years has given me a very negative view of homeless people.

Well, the nature of your job kinda necessitates hostile interactions. It's kind of different from say, a soup kitchen where you might have positive interactions.

If you are in a blue state then the far left is probably to blame. They virtue signal all day and night but when a bill arrives to build affordable housing near them, they freak out like roaches or rats are coming and try to block said bill.

I wish homeless people cease to exist and never EVER be any more homeless people ever again. I hope my little house never gets destroyed or somebody tries to attack me because I feel like my house is targeted. Not cute stuff.

Except a survey of people who actually build affordable housing say that the overwhelming majority of the opposition is from residents who don't want poor people living nearby because they think it will increase crime.

"Community concerns about safety and crime, and the type of population served show specific biases against affordable housing versus general development... First, the most commonly reported reason for opposition is fear of increased crime and decreased sense of safetyheard by over three out of every five developers experiencing opposition. Half of the developers also regularly hear community concern about tax burdens. This concern comes into play with many development projects, but more typically with developments such as affordable housing that normally seek some type of property tax concession from local government, and thus are viewed as not paying their fair share of the costs of public services to the site."

And "virtue signalling," really? That is one of the dumbest terms. Not to mention, anyone who throws it out is signalling themselves, just in a different way.

Affordable housing doesn't mean FREE housing, it means freakin affordable housing and in this day and age that is almost non-existent.

And the real truth is that local residents don't want their property values to go down, which they will, if a cheaper property/place to live is nearby (not to mention those undesirable poor people....of course).

It's rediculous, but true, that it's often actual residents that fight to prevent people from having a place to live that isn't going to cost them 2/3rds of their monthly income. There should be places you can rent in every industrialized area, that provides about 30% of the population with housing proportional to the min wage of the area (not more then 60*min wage per month, for a studio apartment).

Once min wage jumps to $10 (fed that is), that would be about $600 a month...which is actually what a studio goes for in many area, there just are not many of them available (certainly not enough).

I understand not wanting their property value to go down. But couldn't it also go down just because the homeless are around? Wouldn't it be better to put up cheaper house so there are less homeless people rather than just letting them wander the streets? I would think cheaper homes around the area would lessen the property value drop more than multiple homeless people living on the corner...

It's not the cheaper housing that lowers the property values so much as the sort of people that get moved into that low income housing. Low income housing tends to get filled up with trashy people and crime rates in the area will often rise dramatically. A large percentage of low income housing is filled with people who made it their job to take advantage of the system. They are not the sort of people you want moving into your area, especially not in the numbers that low income housing often brings.

That's not to say that all low income housing is filled with garbage people. There are good people that genuinely need assistance. But there are enough garbage people that it makes an impact on the area.

And then there are the luxury apartment buildings that have a token number of affordable apartments in them that are accessed via a different entrance and lobby so the richer residents never have to see the poor people that live next to them. That's just elitist nonsense.

Which is all the more reason to push to have it everywhere. Those problems exist because trashy and/or criminal people are concentrated in a handful of areas, often with a dearth of local services and activities. Distribute the same amount of affordable housing all over the city (without the aforementioned efforts to isolate them from their richer neighbours), and you get fewer communities of criminals arising.
